Try halving those numbers, and you'd be closer to the top whack we'll be paying next season, I imagine.

"I imagine". In other words you haven't got a clue?

Playing Devils advocate again, the total wage bill last year was around 2.4 million. That is shared between 41 playing staff, most of whom are on considerably less than the 23 grand a year that averages out to, and 70 others, a good number of whom are part time. I think that means Phil is being pessimistic.

No, it means I have a fair idea from having spoken to a few players, their ex-girlfriends, bits on the side etc down town.

If I told my missus what I earn I'd be skint.

Good point. I'm not claiming to know for sure, it's just down the last few years I've pieced together information from different sources, so I reckon I can make a decent assumption. They're pretty highly incentivised as well, so their weekly earnings can go up 20-30% on wins/goals/clean sheets etc.

Ah, but you didn't say basic, did you? You must be careful. We may be in trouble, but exaggerating those kinds of figures will just make it harder for whoever follows Jeff and we don't want to discourage anyone, do we?

All players are incentivisted, at all levels of football - my mate who plays for Tipton Town is, just as Peter Till was at Walsall. It's just some clubs incentivise their players more than others, depending on the attitude of the management, and the financial situation of the club.

When anyone talks about "so-and-so" earning £5000 a week, that's their basic - why would anyone ever say so and so earns £5000 a week, if that £5000 is made up of £1500 bonuses and his basic was much lower. They're incentivised on everything from appearances, to partial appearances (dependant on the amount of time they spend on the pitch) to goals, clean sheets, wins, league position at the end of season etc.

You mean like backing a non-existant bid for the land and thus effectively opposing a rival bid, and refusing to meet the supporter who had made said bid and had invited trust representatives down to meet him? No, we wouldn't want to discourage that.

Never happened, Phil. In fact I asked for a meeting and was told no. The rest is a gross distortion as well, apart from the fact it had nothing to do with the football club itself!

Ryan Green is rumoured to be signing for us over the next day or so. He is a right back who was with Hereford United until released at the end of last season, having made nearly 200 appearances for them in two seperate spells.

Shame, he'd have been a tidy little addition to the squad.

Dunno about taking a single Hereford player on personally, they went down for a reason did they not? Should steer well clear from those bunch.

I agree he would have.

There are some half decent names down Hereford like Kenny Lunt, but as you say, they went out the football league for a reason. :? :|

Ex dingle who promised much and fizzled out into a series of injuries?
Sounds like our usual form then.

[positive redress mode to appease clappers] Former international though! [/]

Not sure I'm that fussed to have missed out on him to be honest. Regardless of ability, 70 appearances in 5 years is poor and the sort of fitness record I'd probably rather we didn't gamble on.

I fully expect Benning to start the season at left back anyway. If we are to sign a second left back, I'd rather it be one with a fair bit of experience, like Jamie Vincent a couple of years ago.

Is this Benning even any good? I haven't heard a jot about him, ever.

Of the two new young full-backs that we have, I have been more impressed with Ben George's defending - he is solid and dependable. However, Benning is probably more expansive, energetic and gets up and down the flanks. As a consequence, he can get caught out of position if we lose the ball - he is also very light-weight (but so was Ashley Young at his age so don't be disheartened if you're reading this, Malvind!). Avoiding the obvious comebacks, I would like to think that supporters who watch the reserves regularly might agree but Benning is a little like Netan Sensara although he probably gets his head up to play it to a team-mate more often.

Of the rumours that I have read, I would be really pleased with James Chambers; I also think that Ryan Green is a good shout - both are experienced and affordable with local roots. They could really help to bring on the young boys - this could make a nice balance assuming that they steer clear of injuries (which is always a risk in the kind of market that we can shop in - cue further jokes)

The only player that I would not like to see of the recent rumours is Rowan Vine - Sam Parkin alert, Parkin alert, BEEP BEEP BEEP (sound of ten-ton truck reversing slowly).

I would be much happier with Arquin and McLeod (using the Ledesma wages on the latter) - a long shot, I know, but an established goalscorer would make a hell-of-a-difference and might even turn Dean Smith's workmanlike, solid sides into a half-decent outfit.

The question is, 'How bothered is Bonser' (Geoff Bonser is an anagram of 'Beg offers: no' which neatly sums up our transfer policy I think)?

Well you put up a good argument if nothing else.
I have to agree on Rowan Vine as well, he really is a 'name' in the style of Parkin.
I think these youth players generally will be acting as back up to the first team, which is how it should be at this level.
It's the only way we'll ever generate any money.

Start the season with someone whose never played a senior game at left back.

Nah.

Went to Mansfield and left after four weeks, then spent two years in Spain at the Glen Hoddle Academy. Last season with Brigg Town. Left back or central defender.
