The second and final game north of the board sees the Saddlers travel to Raydale Park to face East of Scotland Premier League side Gretna .
More important team bonding for the new look Saddlers and I dare say another chance for trialist to impress ,
Prediction a 2-0 away win.

Not sure how useful this is going to be.
I hope whoever set this up wasn't thinking "Ah yes, Gretna - ex-Scottish Premier side" and realised that it was "Gretna - one level below the Scottish Third Division*.

Probably not. Neither did I until I read that.

Nice opportunity to play an extra game. We played Halesowen and Moor Green, why not Gretna?

Always useful to have a game where we can (hopefully) put the ball in the net 5 or 6 times.

Now we're up there we might as well, but the near 200-mile journey to get there makes it seem less attractive. Perhaps this is Deano's idea of extreme away-day training?

0-0 with a couple of minutes left. Uninspiring game - no-one poor and no-one outstanding.

Would have liked to see us put a few past Gretna, but oh well.

I saw from the Walsall Official Facebook Site that we were denied a stonewall penalty when Joey Butlin was brought down.
Some things never change do they.

Re: Gretna F.C. 2008 Pre Season Freindly (A) Friday 15/7/11
Got back last night from Gretna. They were up for it and gave us a physical match the Walsall lads didn’t seem up for it. After Wednesdays performance by Taundry he returned to his anonymous self in midfield I really do hope Deano has other options in the centre of the park. Everything good that we did came through Chambers. Butiln should have had a stone wall penalty in the second half but the ref who was abysmal throughout the game missed the challenge despite being up with play. It incensed Manny Smith that much he talked himself into being substituted with his talking back to the Ref. No player stood out but a few were anonymous throughout the match. Butlin was one dimensional and had no vision I cannot see him making the grade if that’s the type of performance he is going to put in.
Although a big thank you has to be said to the Gretna Directors who gave a ball and rattle to the Walsall FC mascot and made us feel at home and gave me free admission to the game.

If he is going to be anonymous against a team like Gretna, who aren't even in the scottish league, what would he be like against football league teams! We really need 1 if not 2 more options there before the season starts. :?

Good work DZ.
Quite a bit to be concerned about in there. The result and the ref don't matter a jot but what you'd hope to see is a group of players who have enjoyed their time together, gelled a bit and have a decent spirit about them. Phrases like "the Walsall lads didn't seem up for it" and the repeated use of the word "anonymous" seem to suggest that these things may be missing. Hopefully just a blip that will iron itself out as we move towards the stuff that really matters.

They did have a two hour training session the morning before, and were all playing with legs like lead.
