2 games on the trot we lead 1-0, get a "professional footballer" sent off, then losing 2-1

Re: Southend United (H) League 1 Saturday 15/8/09.
Just got back in.
Clayton Ince should be dropped. We need to sign another Goalkeeper - Maybe a season long loan for one of the young reserve team goalkeepers at our local rivals. Clayton was simply dreadful today and let us down very badly. The other senior professional to let us down badly was Dwayne Mattis, after already being booked he went to ground with a lunge and caught their player - ridiculous and leaves us with a big problem on Tuesday.
The other bewildering decision was that of after being reduced to ten men...playing Troy in midfield. Why ? He was getting forward and beyond Parkin, and leaving a huge gap in midfield which the poor Richards had to cover. Both wingers had good games, Steve Jones kept coming in from the left and looked dangerous. He reminded me very much of Darren Wrack. It showed the manager did not have any confidence in O'Keefe or Bradley, by preferring a striker to them in midfield. very strange.
Parkin didn't have a good first half at all, but worked hard and his experience led to him getting the penalty, which he despatched confidently. What annoyed me was the amount of long balls we decided to play from the back to Parkin. Parkin isn't good in the air, he is better when he has the ball to feet - why we kept lumping it down the channel to him - god knows.
The attendance was 3685 - with 150 Sarfend fans. Very very poor for an opening home game. I think we will finish lower mid table on that evidence. We need 3/4 experienced players to come in, because our squad looks very weak. We showed good spirit today, but sometimes that is not enough.

Agreed Daz. We did that at Brighton and Accrington and it seems thats the way Hutch wants to use Parkin, although we can all see he's tat in the air.

I dont think Parkin had a bad game. He brings other players into the attack quiet well. I think we need to get the ball to his feet. There number 6 had Parkin everytime (eventhough he was pulling his shirt now and again).
What can you say about Ince? How can a international keeper throw the ball straight to Barnard? Big mistake and if u ask me it cost us the game, brought them back into it and put us on the back foot.
As soon as Mattis got booked you could tell he was going to get sent off. Didnt see the first yellow so i cant comment on that. But when Mattis went in for that tackle i think Southend's player was on his way down. From where i was it looked like Mattis got the ball but it looked dangerous. Not sure if it was a red card.
Overall a good result. 6th in the table will suit me nicely.

4 points from the first 2 games is not a bad return. I'd have taken that before the season started.
The low attendance is an entirely different matter, however.

I would not like to see Parkin have a bad game then. It was one the worst performances by a centre forward in a Walsall shirt I have ever seen - and I have seen some rubbish. He fell over well to win the penalty and took it well - but apart from that he contributed absolutely nothing.
However it can take time for forwards to settle in, and he cannot be as bad as he was today every week or he would not be a professional footballer, so maybe he will show us what he can do in the weeks to come.

Well we had it all for an opening game - goals, sending off, howler(s) by Clayton to gift them a goal and a Penalty.
Plus I hate to say it but it was a blatant dive for the Penalty .
Overall I thought we were v average - if we dont get our act together Leeds could have a field day.
Not impressed with the indiscipline of Mattis.
We managed to self destruct nicely with no real help from Southend, a lesser team would have killed us off and we had to cheat to get a draw so overall I didnt leave feeling that happy (until I heard the Wolves score that is!?)
