DAVEDEAN wrote:Walsall have been ordered to ‘battle and scrap’ as they try to avoid their worst start to a league season for 17 years at Millwall on Saturday.

The Saddlers’ League Two title heroes will head to The Den on the brink of an unwanted piece of history – the club’s poorest start to a campaign since 1990.

And manager Richard Money is looking for substance over style after his players fought their way to a first clean sheet of the season in Saturday’s draw with Port Vale.

“I’m well aware that people want to see us playing free-flowing football with two wingers crossing the ball and we want to do the same,” said Money.

“But at the moment I don’t think we’re going to get out of the start that we have had by trying to play free-flowing football.”

Walsall new-boy Junior Mawete is in line for a possible debut at Millwall on Saturday after he received FIFA clearance for a first team bow.

The 26-year-old Angola international – once hailed in Portugal as ‘the next Eusebio’ – is in red hot scoring form for the reserves having hit his third goal in as many second string matches against Albion last night.

And manager Richard Money could now turn to the Angolan-born Portuguese national to pep up his goal-shy attack at The Den as the Saddlers chase their first win of the season.

Mawete is now closing in on full fitness after signing a four-month contract at the Banks’s Stadium on transfer deadline day, and his two-week wait for international clearance has now ended with Walsall receiving the necessary paperwork.

“He’s been with us on and off throughout the summer and I wouldn’t say his fitness is 100 per cent where he would like it to be but he’s not too far away from it,” said Money.

“He has got a massive pedigree. As a young player he was thought of as the new Eusebio.

“At 18 he was lauded as being the next one of that ilk.

“He played a number of times in Benfica’s first team and then, as often happens with young players, he just lost his way.

“We have taken a calculated gamble that we can get him back to somewhere near that sort of level.

“If we can we’ve got ourselves a player and if we can’t then there is nothing much lost.”

Mawete, who was compared to Portuguese great Eusebio due to their similar Africa heritage, will come into contention for a possible start as Tommy Mooney continues to struggle with a calf injury.

Nothing to lose? Here's hoping 4 months fitness training with the Saddlers whilst being paid can turn into a longer contract rather than him buggering off to one of our bigger-paying neighbours after he's scored 3 hat-tricks. Go go Junior!

I'll go for a 1-1 draw but I'm not too hopeful.

Are people on some sort of drugs?
We have absolutely no chance whatsoever of beating Millwall.

Don't managers only have to scrape a win against us to be sacked? If so, 1-0 to Millwall will see him go, but a 0-1 reverse would see him gaining the full support of the board for another week or two.

I reckon I'll be there, will it be cash turnstiles?

I'm hoping Mawete starts just to try out something different. I really hope we get our first win but I can see a draw.

Millwall hope to have veteran defender Richard Shaw (hamstring) available for the match against Walsall.
On-loan Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara, who was suspended for the Brighton game, is available.

Walsall will be without strikers Tommy Mooney (calf) and Carlos Carneiro (shoulder) for the away trip.

Defender Alan Picken is hoping to return but will be restricted to the bench as he continues to regain match fitness after his knee problems.

1-1 is the most optimistic I can get although i'm tempted to go for a win to be the opposite of Sheffield.

After the tosh he spoke about Lampard, we're sure to do ok.

Mooney out again. No worries, with the new Eusebio we'll be fine

I despair, I really do. I never say this, but I'm glad I'm working and have no intention of finding out how we are getting on during tomorrow afternoon. You have to protect yourself somehow.

I'm more excited about the Gas playing Leeds tonight. For the first time in a while, I'm casting an envious glance at Bristol Rovers. They have three decent strikers, all of whom are scoring on a regular basis. They spent 150K on two League Two players [Andy Williams and David Pipe, both in their, gasp, 20's] who seem to have bridged the 'huge gap' [Copyright UTS] between the divisions pretty easily.

One of their three strikers, Lambert, was signed last season for 200K as a replacement for Agogo with a proven record of quality and it has paid off, big time [admittedly after a poor start]. We, on the other hand, give short term contracts based on 'off-field connections' to players who are either untried/untested with the hope, though with little obvious evidence, that we come up with a gem.

It's crud, is'nt?

Yep... its always the way. Whenever we do well we don't speculate a bit. Even with the odd decent wage or bit of a fee... we're not asking for millions, just the odd signing.

Who's that bird on your avatar Priestly??? Ers a bosta...

Sell Agogo for £200k, spend £200k on Lambert. Sell Scott Sinclair for approx £150k, spend approx £150k on Pipe and Williams. We've sold - who exactly? - to be able to spend those sort of fees? Besides which, Bristol Rovers have just spent five or six years struggling in the bottom division, something that we haven't done since the time we nearly went out of business at the start of the 1990s. Still, our comparison with Rovers is a good one. They were struggling near the bottom of League Two in September but stuck by their talented manager and ended up getting promotion. Oh - that wasn't what you meant, was it?

We could sell Scott Dann to fund investment in midfield and up front - we've got plenty of defenders after all.

See what people say about Bonser if that does happen. I can guarantee that it won't be complimentary...

Just about sums up how I feel about it. Seems a long way from sunny Nottingham in April.
