The youngsters just didn't seem all that bothered to be honest! We went 1-0 down after Boldmere had a corner which came out to one of the Boldmere players on the edge of the box, he hit it really well towards the top corner, Skeldon got both hands on it but it went in.

Second half and the youth team stopped trying to play it in the air and played it into Hanna who rounded the keeper and put it away.

Boldmere then came straight back at us and sloppy defending with no-one closing down players, the ball fell to a Boldmere player on the edge of the box again after Skeldon had done well to block a shot and the "Mikes" player duly dipatched it into the bottom corner just under Skeldon's arm.

I can't exactly remember the 3rd goal but I think it was down to poor defending again.

The stars of the youth team were few and far between but Leon Quarless ran his opposite number ragged until he was moved to centre forward, Netan Sansara was solid and linked well with Quarless. A youngster who was the spitting image of Dobson played really well and captained well, not very vocal though.

The other positive is that against a physical team who tended to play dirty, the lads kept their cool and didn't lash out in anger or give silly fouls away. Not much protection from the ref however.

Not a patch on Leamore's reports but I'm sure there will be one from him soon.

Didn't we bring more then 16 players... no trialists?

No trialists, only our youth team.

I think I'm going to try and see a fair bit of Boldmere this season.

They were Fantastic.

Skilful

Athletic

Hungry

Energetic

Aware of the abilities of their team mates and played to their strenghts.

A very very very very good team to watch. I'm rather shocked.

They made a few of our lads look like real muppets tonight. The Boldmere numbers 8 and 9 particulary impressive.

Walsall's best players ? Sansara looks talented, our number 6 a fast skilful player could do something. Midfield looked rather mundane. As did the rest of the team.

A lot of Boldmere's best players have left, a few of them to Sutton including one of my mates. There is one kid who could be very good and I've told both Bill Jones and Mick Halsall about him but I'm not sure if it was followed up. There were a couple of other league clubs looking at him so I hope we don't miss out.

Was it just me that thought all 4 officials were suprisingly good tonight. Better than the crap we had last season...

That was the young lad Rhodes, wasn't it? Injury-prone, and certainly can't stay upright. Get rid.

Friendly

Boldmere St.Michael's 3 1 Walsall XI

Saddlers line-up (4-4-2)

Joel Skeldon

Jake Woollaston
Richard Taundry (Capt.)
Tom Schwarz
Netan Sansara (Sam Adkins)

Cameron Jones (Stuart Hendrie)
Andrew Bentley
Richard Davies (James)
Leon Quarless

Chris Hanna (Joe Howes)
Rory Curtis (Edward Ryan)

Manager:- Mick Halsall (assisted by Bill Jones)

Goal log
23 min - 1-0 - superb left-foot strike by Ricky Baker, from the edge of the penalty area.
52 min - 1-1 - Quarless opened up the home defence for Hanna to coolly round the keeper and level the scores.
55 min - 2-1 - another cracking shot, this time from man-of-the-match, Kirk Smith, restored Boldmere's lead.
63 min - 3-1 - a rather flattering win for the Mikes was sealed with another fine goal, this time from Steve Poole.

As with all pre-season friendlies, it is difficult to know what to learn from the game. Boldmere did have a very slight edge but the margin of the win flattered them in what was quite an entertaining game. It was a very young and inexperienced Saddlers side, consisting mainly of apprentices with a handful of 1st-year professionals. Even some of the latter group were not present (Bradley, Deeney, Smith, Nicholls, McDermott, etc.) – presumably with the senior pros at Lilleshall.

There was one triallist (James) - a young Aussie - I don't know if his name was Bruce!

Very poor and disappointing report Leamore - can you return and report it as a convincing win ? :?

As long as we are rubbish in the pre-season friendlies we will do well in the league :P

Actually, Dave, I've not made my mind up about him. He is quick and aggressive in his style - a definite handful for an opposing centre-back. On the basis of last night's performance only, he often seemed to need an extra touch of the ball and was, too often, a "nearly" man. The cross would come over and he would nearly get to it, the ball would be put through and he would nearly get a touch, etc. This is probably a little unfair on the lad as it WAS the first game of the season and his sharpness will inevitably improve as he gets more games under his belt. He will inevitably benefit from the extra year that DD has given him. Having said all that, he took his goal very well, although full marks to Leon Quarless for laying it on.

Leamore, Who was the trialist last night? Was it the lad with long shaggy hair that came on in 2nd half?

Yup, that's the one. He only came on for the last few minutes and he was warming up in a Liverpool F.C. tracksuit top!

Yeah, Stewart has been there for a while. Lee was watching last night.

Did Kirk (the ginger lad) play for Boldmere last night Leamore? If so was he any good?

As I said in the match report, above - man-of-the-match (and scored a cracking goal).

Sorry, missed that bit. Good player on his day but lacks consistency. All their best players, including the captain have left.
