One bad team performance and all the knives come out for Mark Wright. It's all getting a bit boring now - we know there are some of you that single him out for criticism, that's your issue, get over it. Wright suffered the same problem as Butler today - lack of service. When he did get the ball he had the beating of Vincent and showed it when he put over 3 or 4 decent crosses in the first half. Way more than the combined efforts of Fox and Taylor (more about him later) in 90 minutes.
The real problem today was that Swindon put five in midfield and were up against unfit Dobson and half-fit Kinsella. Dobson had one of the worst games I've seen from an individual Walsall player, but I've also seen him do a very good job for us this season - I don't think we need to get rid of him or replace him. We tried to change it to 4-3-3 in the second half, but that didn't work either. The first time this season one of DD's tactical switches hasn't come off. Coupled with that, several other players had really poor games by their standards. Westwood was all over the place, Tommy Wright added absolutely nothing and I thought both Roper AND Dann looked shaky at the back. Ince seemed to be rooted to his line for the first - the striker was odds-on to score but he didn't exactly make it difficult for him.
There are positives however. We are still seven points clear for one. This was a massive off-day for two and never mind Swindon Town, we would have been beaten by Willenhall Town today. We've bounced back from bad days before and I'm sure we will again. The other thing that encouraged me was the heart shown by the players - Dann, Butler, Dobson, to name three - who didn't hide despite the poor display. That is with one exception - Kris Taylor. If he doesn't want to be a professional footballer then I wish he'd stop wasting everyone's time and clear off now. It really frustrates me when someone with his talent wastes it with his (lack of) attitude. He was a disgrace today and Roper + Fox spent the 90 minutes berating him for his distribution, decisions, position sense and all-round lack of effort. Christian Roberts had a field day - he didn't even have to beat his man, Taylor just let him run past. After doing that once in the second half, DD had words with Taylor. Five minutes later - exactly the same thing happened. DD just shook his head in disgust. Said it all.

Have we stepped back in time to the dreadful Merscum days.
Shocking awfull performance , to many players underperformed .
Was it the curse , no we were beaten by a better side on the day simple as that , I'll put it down to a bad day at the office, nothing we did came off .
What important now is how we bounce back , its unfair to single out individual players each and every one of them were poor .

What really worried me was the fact that after Swindon made it 2-0 we might as well have all gone home. Actually,a lot people must have agreed, because by the end 75% of the ground was almost empty. Poor first half, rousing first 15 minutes of the second, pathetic last half hour.

Mark Wright is not a professional footballer. He is a wimp, he has little or no technical ability... so much so he's being shown up in the bottom tier of English football!!!
He was one of our leading appearance makers out there today, and we needed all our players to be stood up and counted. And What did Wright do? Well he managed to be the worst performer is a very, very poor performance. How anyone can defend someone with his experience is beyond me. Just look at Christian Roberts today, he's a proper winger.

How can you say he was the worst? Roper had the worst game ive seen him have under a proper manager and Dobson might aswell have been replaced by a pot bellied pig, not saying wright was good at all but you and daz cant carry on singling him out as the only cack player we have.
small picture - bad performance and too many off days to play a team like swindon
big picture - were 7 points ahead, 10 of the auto places and 16 from the playoff places

Gaz im not singling him out, I know Dobson was dreadful and Westwood was Woeful, but Wright is there to provide an attacking threat, because he has the ability to do so. What gets me is his unwillingness to try, the ease with which he gets pushed off the ball etc.
Yes Dobson has had an off day, so has Westwood, Roper was also a few notches below his usual performance, but Wright is a consistent underperformer, a consistent wimp. He can do it, but he's too scared. Dobbo had a poor game today because he's a) unfit and b) up against a 5 man midfield. Wrighty, on the other hand had countless oppurtunities to attack their left back, or even break through the middle, but each ocassion bar one, he was pushed off the ball far too easily, or just gave it away.
Lets just look back to what MWAS were saying a few months back, ie, Mark Wright is the best right winger in this league, he's the leader assister bla bla bla, and in contrast what I was saying, ie, no, he's useless, he cant beat a man, he crossing his hit and miss, and he's a wimp.
Now compare MW to Christian Roberts... Close control combined with pace and drive, beat Taylor 90% of the time, and every single cross was swung in with speed, really whipped in. thats a proper right winger. Mark Wright is simply a wimp, and doesn't deserve to be a footballer. Yes Dobbo, Ropes and Westwood had an off day - but Ropes and Westwood have both been men of the match in recent games, whereas Wright has been atrocious since god knows when. I mean how long has percie been banging on about Mark Wrights number of assists this season? He's been stuck on 6 since the end of Sept aint he? Says it all
It's not singling him out, its simply discussing the most contentious point at the moment. I think we all agree about Westwood, yet there are people who still fail to see how bad Wright is, even tho he's like it week in week out!!

Yes you do, and Daz does, as a member of the Al-MWAS we do realise hes having a shiter at the moment but so are a few of the players but you hardly ever acknowledge them
Yes but so are Kinsella, Fox, T.Wright and Butler but we didnt attack as a team, he is one creative outlet, not the whole of Walsall's
Dobson was pushed around easier than my 8 year old cousin today as was Pead and Tommy Wright
When was Dobson's last good game? If you want to get technical Butler hasnt scored since Bolton and thats what hes there for
If the 5 man midfield is a problem for Dobson then surely it is for Wright
Yeah but what we were saying was true wasnt it, he was one of the top assisters and one of the best right wingers

I'm sorry but that's just not correct. He had precious few chances to attack Jamie Vincent, for several reasons: Swindon doubled up on him, we were far too slow to get the ball to Wright and he was having to pull into central midfield to help out because they had five men in there. He got in 3 or 4 good deep crosses in the first half and beat Vincent on a couple of occasions in a one-on-one.
Now lets look at the left-hand side of the team. Christian Roberts was up against Fox/Taylor. Roberts is a centre-forward by trade, but did have a good game today. However Taylor made it SO easy for him. That's supposed to be the solid wing of our team, with in effect two full-backs on that side. Not only did they not do their primary job - defending - there was nothing going forward either. How many times did we attack down the left-hand side?
I'm not going to pretend Wright is the best player in the team or best winger in the league or anything like that. But I do think he does a job for the team. He blows hot and cold - but name me a winger that doesn't? He also gets far too much unfair criticism - there are players in our team who have performed to similar levels to him this season, but they get nothing like the abuse Wright gets on here.

At least I was only 38 out on the crowd - still hasn't put a smile on my face after watching THAT today.
Have read the post match posts with great interest and have to say I generally agree with what people are saying. We were so poor today and it was even more embarrassing as I took a mate along for the first time - not sure he'll wanna part with his £16 in a hurry again,
Swindon were so much quicker than us today. They played together, closed us down and gave us no time. They attacked and moved the ball with pace too, which we didn't. Their goal came from, yes mistakes, but also good movement and use of the ball. How many times did we look to play a ball in but we had five players in a line across the box with no movement and so no options. Won't go on about Dobbo as I've mentioned it on the 'Dobson' thread elsewhere but, if he was unfit, he shouldn't have played.
Mark Wright had few chances to attack players and we kept lumping hopeful balls across the pitch expecting him to get it and they were just cut out, yet he was not up for the other side of the game today as others have said. He loses the ball too easily and needs to be harder - we seem to have been saying that for ever. Westwood had a mare, that's all that needs to be said really! Ropes not at his best, midfield lacking and up front had no chance.
The continual ploy of lumping balls over the top into the channels and down the flanks for the forwards to chase onto just isn't going to get us anywhere, other than knackering them out and giving possession away. If we had out and out pace up front then, fair enough, but we don't. We need to use our strikers to hold the ball up and bring others into the game more, they are good at that and we play better as a team when we do it.
Wasn't going to have a long rant tonight but seems I couldn't help myself and type what I'm thinking!! Let's now see how we pick ourselves up for next week - this has to be used as a wake up call. On the positive side, many results went our way today and we are still nicely clear at the top. If I'd been offered this position at the start of the season I know what I'd be grabbing!! So, let's dust ourselves off, chalk it down to a seriously bad day at the office, and move on to the next game with a lot ofwork to do in the meantime!
Night night!!

The swindon game from row c 52
I Started off the game positive, thinking we are really going to break this curse today. But in the back of my mind thinking why would Swindon bring so many people if they were total crap.
15 or so minuets in I was thinking, this game is dull, maybe DD wants a slow start and catch a goal after half time,, I began to plan on what I would eat at half time, and wither to spend the £2 on lemonade or the £1 30 on water. Then what happens, roper slips over leaving Ince all alone with one of the first decent strikers in the league to slot an inevitable goal past, conceding for the 3rd time in consecutive matches…
Half time came and went, I had no thoughts on the game such was my dissolution. I looked at the motorway for a long time (2 min) then realised we were playing a sum what cack game and id been entranced by a lorry with scump written on the side..
I started to worry we would lose, we hadn’t had many chances, except from kinsellers volley, which he was overly critical of, however week, it was by far the best shot one of our players had. Fastforward to the penalty. I said to my mate “ Ince will save this no worry,, ya reckon” he said “no way” I accepted his opinion and didn’t believe in Ince, and because of that that twerp scored.
For the rest of the game I progressively felt as if the players had given up, and then realised the fans had started to, but I sat their. Stupidity I guess. Final whistle I was angry at the people clapping, as there was nothing to clap at, we wasted a perfectly good opportunity to go 12 point clear…........ should of gone Christmas shopping.

My 7 year old daughter got it right today - 'they should pull their socks up, and quickly'.
Curse of MoM for sure, but the fundamental problem today was midfield. When they had the ball they lost it too easily, usually by poorly placed passes telegraphed to the oppo because they took so damn long over anything. Defence were poorer than usual, but then they were also getting the ball, or oppo players, coming back at them too much because we couldn't hold onto, and then use offensively, any possession we got in midfield. I started watching in the early eighties, and back then we seemed to have a stream of wingers who could rip down the line at pace, and get a cross in, often with a bit of fancy footwork thrown in. Nothing like that for seasons now. MW was awful today, but he wasn't alone - Dobson was truly awful, and too many others pretty anonymous. Fox was useful occasionally, and rotten frequently. The second goal wasn't a penalty, and Roper's booking was harsh, or at least inconsistent - I'm sure the first goal resulted from hesitancy in the tackle caused by that booking - and the second goal resulted from his slip. And Swindon are a decent side who came, played well enough, and took full advantage of the fact that we were appalling. And when they had the ball, we gave them far too much space and time - something they were canny enough not to give us.

Why are people picking on Mark Wright? He was by no means the worst player out there.
Did those who are moaning about him not notice . . .
Tommy Wright? Has he been given a contract already? He looks like the typical loan player who has a good match while on loan and is then terrible once he has been signed. He was total rubbish today - might as well have stayed at home for all he did.
Dobson? He has been rubbish all season - at last some others have noticed that he cannot pass forward to a Walsall player.
Roper? Totally at fault for both goals. He is not usually like this - is he unfit or unwell?
Ince? Like a rabbit in the headlights for the first goal.
Taylor? Cannot tackle, cannot pass. Apart from that he is all right.
Fox? See Taylor.
DD got it wrong today. Mark Wright, Kinsella and Westwood should have stayed on. He should have taken off Tommy Wright, Dobson and either Taylor or Fox and brought on Ishmel, Nicholls and Gerrard (It is not my fault the first two were not even on the bench). Please DD do not put Dann into the forward line again. He is no more a forward than I am.

Ok so we had a off day and like some have said we are still 7 points clear at the top. It had to happen at some point, yes it is rubbish that we lost but we'll get over it also IMO it's better to be beaten by a team at the top of league and not the bottom.
The team were off all over the pitch, Dobson was trying but it wasn't working, M Wright was bad but doesn't deserve the stick which he gets, Ropes made terrible errors. If it's MoM award lets it's only this game and we go to Wrexham and play well and come away with 3 points.
Midfield was the main issue with Kinsella gone, Dobson looking shaking and Keates injured it is a major worry. But i have faith in Money that he'll get it sort or aleast patch it up until January when can get a long term replacement in for Kinsella.
It's shame as well that we had a big crowd there because some maybe put off a return visit because of the team's performance but hopefully not as it good to see a big crowd for a change.

Whats the point in signing midfielders!?
All they do is watch the ball go over there bloody heads!
Not only do we need to sign a midfielder that can create something weve got to stop the hopeful long balls upfront.
Anyway isnt it time for pead to shine in the middle now? who else is gonna play in the middle?

Its been like that all season Dave...we have just been very lucky...we were shown up for what we really were yesterday...how the hell can any team entertain the crowd when all they do is keep by-passing the midfield with a big hoof from the defence everytime...it means that the midfield dont actually see the ball on the way forward apart from a brief glimse as it goes over their heads...you've all been telling me all season "it doesn't matter how crappy our football is as long as we win"...its amazing how you can all see what ive been seeing all season now we've been shown up for what we are by a team who know how to play football and made our defensive boring styffling style look embarrassing.DAVEDEAN wrote:Have we stepped back in time to the dreadful Merscum days.
Shocking awfull performance , to many players underperformed .
Was it the curse , no we were beaten by a better side on the day simple as that , I'll put it down to a bad day at the office, nothing we did came off .
What important now is how we bounce back , its unfair to single out individual players each and every one of them were poor .

Daniel Fox to a tee. Following a game where (justifiably) Dobson, Wright & Westwood have been roundly criticised, with Ince & Roper have been faulted for the opening goal (again, rightly), Fox can consider himself a lucky boy- at least Mark Wright spent 45 minutes attempting, albeit unsuccessfully, to give us an option/outlet out wide.
Fox spent 90 minutes ballwatching. I lost count of the number of times he got in Dobson/Kinsella/Taylor's way through sheer lack of awareness. We were crying out for someone on the overlap out on the left, and the first time I recall Fox getting within spitting distance of the touchline, it was already 0-2 & damage done. Very poor.

Sedgley Beacon and the two churches in Wednesbury were truely magnificent in the orange icy cold sky in the second half today.
Registered Saddler is correct-- just one of those days, didn't come off agaisnt a good team. Reasons are clear leaving a bit of thinking to do for our very good( the best) manager.

I agree with most match assessments on here so far.
I agree that Swindon were more mobile and hungrier in midfield.
I thought Westwood and Dobson both had absolute 'mares.
I thought, however, that we were a little brighter at the start of the second half, and were pushing forward.
I thought that we looked like we would have got something out of the game at that point.
THEN IT HAPPENED. I can't believe that no-one has yet mentioned the most shocking penalty decision I have ever seen in my thirty odd years of watching the Saddlers.
From my viewpoint at the half way line Dann simply stuck out his leg and took the ball from the Swindon player.
There was absloutely nothing contentious about it at all.
No contact with player.
No appeals from Swindon.
It was a most shocking piece of refereeing.
This appalling decision effectively killed the game , as our heads then dropped completely,
and Swindons were up.
I can't wait to see it on TV.
If it then looks any different I will admit it, but my feeling is that it will turn up on A Question of Sport in years to come on the What happened next round, as no-one would ever guess that a referee could be THAT incompetent.

I think the reason nobody has mentioned the penalty is because we were so out classed that a bad penalty decision here or there would make no difference...we were (as usual) so defensive that it was embarrassing to compare the 2 teams.addo wrote:I agree with most match assessments on here so far.

Like I said, I do agree that Swindon looked the better team, and I do think that we struggled in a few areas today.
Having said that, I still thought, up until that point, that we would still get something out of the game.
We were camped in the Swindon half early second half.
I have no problem with the opposition being better than average, but do have a problem with below standard officiating.

Match report.
What a miserable bunch. It had to happen sooner or later. Just let's get it out of the system.

Sid , 2 defeats in 21 league game tells me we are far from crap.
what went wrong yesterday i put down to a bad day at the office ,
we will bounce back from this , we did it after Grimsby and will do so again. This is basement football we are not going to see fast flowing football its not about that its about battling , scrapping for every point you can get . and thats what we have been doing all season
