It's an interesting point.
I wouldn't really call Birmingham a footballing hotbed personally, there are plenty who couldn't care less about any of the mediocre teams whereas in Liverpool pretty much everyone is a footballing family. Not sure in Manchester but that's been home to two of the most successful teams of the last 25 years so numbers will be fine, Manchester United are a worldwide institution like them or not and in fairness Man. City's crowds were very good even when they were in league one/division two in 98/99.
I would class Villa's hardcore as about 30k and then about 10k floaters who turn up on form, weather, opposition etc. I really don't think any Villa fan would claim we have massive support compared to other major clubs, our away numbers are generally good but compare us to others and our home support dosen't hold up that well. Dosen't help that we're cack year in year out these days.
Now our friends from Small Heath....how poor is their support? As I previously said when Man. City were in league one, they were getting 25k every week, Blues were struggle to muster much over 15k, they struggle as it is in the championship now.
West Brom's hardcore is similar really so whisper it quietly but only Wolves's support holds up whatever league they're in and they've had plenty of ups and downs in the last 10 years but usually average 20k whatever league they're in.
To me yes Walsall's home crowds could be better but then again compare them to Tranmere when they were in league one, Orient, Oldham, Bury, Rochdale etc.
All teams in the shadows of Big football clubs and they all draw 4-5k, maybe more when they have good seasons.

Incorrect. Wolves support evaporated when they fell into the old Division 3 and 4 along with us in the 80's. We actually had a higher average than them. I'll dig out the figures, but I'm pretty sure some of their games had less then 3000 there.

They only broke through the 4000 barrier because of big away attendances from us and Derby - 7522 & 9166 respectively. When they came to Fellows Park that season the attendance was 10,480 - bigger than any league attendance at Wolves that season. They did get 11,310 in the first round of the league cup, but that was to see the mighty Walsall knock them out of the competition!

I almost fell into the same trap, until reading HQ's post again.
He's going on ten-year stats, not thirty.

"Wolves support holds up whatever league they are in" - not true.
Anyway I will use any excuse to roll out those figures...

Details of the TV deal haven't been divulged but the so-called "solidarity payment" (ie the bung for Football League clubs doing what Scudamore tells them) is now formally linked to the Premier League TV deal as a percentage of TV revenue.
That means you can make an educated guess at the ballpark figure for Championship clubs next season.
The Swiss Ramble has it as £8.7m (compared to £4.5m this season). That doesn't include parachute payments for clubs relegated from Championship to L1.

Interesting - roughly equivalent to adding about 20,000 to the gate for each league match.
A team getting 10,000 gates in the championship - maybe us next season, given Wolves, Blues, Villa, Derby, Notts Forest and Coventry could be there, would have (very roughly) the same income as a team getting 30,000 in League 1.

Exactly. So all of a sudden, we couls compete financially with the likes of the blunts, but would no doubt spend the money more wisely.
THIS is the year to go up, as it was when we got to the promoted last time, when the ITV Digital money came (and went). JB isn't stupid.

No he's not (but he does drop the odd gaff. That's why Gamble is fronting the show) but I hope he's thinking in terms of a sustained existence in the second rather than a bigger Under Sea Den and increasing his helicopter fleet... Mmm?

I'd rather his debt be paid off, firstly, and then the unlikely readjoinment of the club to the land, after taking a nice pay off.

I'm no Wolves apologist but was that around the time Molineux was in such a state that three of the stands were being knocked down or not in use. From the mid 90s their support has been pretty consistant and it's had what four seasons of top level football in that period.
When they were in league 1 recently they were getting 15-20k on a regular basis, Blues can just about get that now top half in the championship. I doubt West Brom would get much more than that if they went down.

They had a good season and went straight back up at the first attempt. If they hadn't would they have drawn the same numbers? Maybe wouldn't have gone down to level they did in 85-6, but I think they would have dropped considerably if they were only mid-table (or even in a relegation battle!)
