I try and defend Smith as much as I can with regards league form but no excuses tonight, this is a total bottle job. It's a near enough full strength team against second bottom of league two ffs.

Much like 30 or so other teams in league 1 and 2 then. I don't understand how you can keep 9 cleansheets in league one and then concede 2 in the first half against an awful Tranmere side. Walsall FC - regardless of manager and personnel - clueless in cup competitions, forever.

Cup runs are what bring in support. They are what got me hooked on the Saddlers. Fifth round of the cup in 1978 and a trip to Arsenal as a kid.

Never going to happen again and our support will suffer in the long run. No-one at the club seems to care though....

I genuinely think you'll find we were unlucky. We've had 4 shots on target, no goals. They've lucked out with 2 out of 3. Betcha.

It begs the question why our players continually can't get 'up' for cup games. Only defeat in November - a cup game vs the Sloppies. Our next defeat, away at Tranmere in the JPT. Lincoln, Slough, Luton, Dagenham...the list goes on. Why are we so eternally crap in the cup competitions?

Smith's idea of gung ho will be to let the players get to the opposition penalty area before they pass back to O'Donnell. It's getting boring now, same old every game and nothing looks like changing.

According to mighty Mick, we were totally dominating the game until they scored, but were not showing any urgency in the opponent's half. Sounds like most games this season then.
I fully expect Deano to unleash a tactical masterplan for a second half onslaught...
