Port Vale (H) Football League Trophy Tuesday 9/10/12.
After receiving a welcomed bye in the first round we entertain our old friends from Burslem , Vale under the much travelled Micky Adams sit 2nd in league 2 on 23 points
from 11 played , with a very impressive away record of 5 wins and 1 defeat - 14 goals scored 6 conceded .
Prediction
Think this we go to penalties ,hopefully the Saddlers will progress .

Vale will bring close on a thousand, they're all chuffed with mighty Walsall away.
Be a bit crazy if we put them on the side expecting only a couple of hundred.

All jizzin over it on OneValeFan, be 500 minimum. We'd take a few there no doubt if if was away and we didn't have Shrewsbury a few days later.

Think we'll lose 1-0.
It'll be interesting to see whether Smith gives some of the fringe players a start. Had we won yesterday, I think he might have looked to do that but now I suspect he'll want to give those players a chance to get back to winning ways.

I usually do not like it when a manager changes the team for a cup match but I think that Smith should rest some of our young players on Tuesday. Carlisle, who did not play in midweek, were much fitter than our players as the match went on, and the winning goal came from them having a lot of players working hard when ours were shattered.

To be fair, having only just listened to Smith's post-match comments this afternoon, I think you're probably right. His hands are tied to a certain extent though in that we don't have a great deal of options in reserve.

We should hopefully be bringing loads due to
You being down the road
Chasing top of the league by 3 points
Top league goalscorer, Tom Pope had some sort of divine revelation over the Summer break and has struck 11 in 11
We were top goalscorers in league football, not sure if we still are
Won 5 away on the trot relatively convincingly
We did Tranmere 2-0 who are unbeaten in League 1 in the first round
Really looking forward to it!

Here is one Port Vale fans view from there forum.
Walsall are a basement division club. They get **** attendances for their level and will probably go down.
I'm confident with our new brand of attacking football we can bury them. And then get Shrewsbury or Crewe in the next round.

Pope will be in Jail before the year is out, good player but a massive arrogant t**t.
We're a good side all in all fella, once (if) we get going Vale will be in trouble, doing well in League Two or not, just had a mini-blip at the moment, undeserved loss vs Orient and a non-event loss vs Carlisle.
Probably be about 1,700 home fans, and however many you bring. We are a basement division club don't forget (lol).

Don't mind Dave, NSD.
In succinct words he's a Bi-Polar [modded - don't avoid the swear filter] mentalist. I could tell it was him who had written that as soon as I read your post
Darth, Tom is a totally reformed lad. He's lost a lot of weight, no longer goes out on the town every weekend (in no small thanks to Gary Roberts getting booted out to Mansfield) and is honestly a completely different player. Those factors have contributed to him getting 11 goals in 11 games by the start of October.
I hope you come at us because that suits our style of play and unless you deal with the two wingers (watch the highlights I posted above) and Shuker in the middle your back four are going to have a long night. Unfortunately for us Captain Doug Loft is out who will be a big miss, good creative player we could have done with.

Another post from port vale forum
Walsall were absolutely shocking yesterday against Carlisle. Watch the highlights on the football league show, they looked beyond woeful and there were boos at the end for the squad and manager.
Probably the best draw we could have gotten to progress.
Did i miss this part? i recall many fans clapping them off the pitch.

I booed because I thought it was clearly offside, and so did loads, sounds like Holden was playing him on. Other than that people clapped off/went home.

Re: Port Vale (H) Football League Trophy Tuesday 9/10/12.
Although this is a young team and still early in the season it was clear that the recent exceptional winning performances against top quality league one sides like Notts C, Preston, Brentford and MK Dons have taken their toll and some of our players . For this reason Smith should rest some key players on Tuesday for a game of little significance against a basement league side .league status is obviously more important and it will give some 1st team experience to some squad members as we will surely need to call on them in the next few months. Win or lose this one doesnt really matter- if it did the crowds would be higher- but it will allow our key players to be fresh against Shrewsbury which is an important game.

I don't really give a monkies about this one. I hope DS uses this as a development match and trys a few things different.
Williams up front, Chambers in centre midfield allowing us to play wider. Get the centre backs to actually get goal side of their man.
Grof in goal.
It will be a low crowd, 2k maybe

Ah yes, the 40 seconds of highlights shown on the FLS - must be a gospel representation of the 90 minute football match.

Note to you young 'uns - losing at home to Vale is NOT ACCEPTABLE - NO EXCUSES.
By this, I don't mean "would be unfortunate" or "oh well, it was only the mickey mouse cup" - NOT ACCEPTABLE.
The last Walsall players to lose at home to the Bog-Mekkers (League Cup, early 80s) were re-discovered 10 years later when the Fellows Park pitch was dug up to lay Morrison's car park.
