Mick Kearns (8.15pm): I think the players need to get wider.
Mick Kearns (8.27pm): The players aren't getting to the centre enough.

good results from tonight's Carling cup ties
Charlton 0 -1 Yeovil
Crewe 2 -0 Barnsley
Luton 2-0 Plymouth
M K Dons 1-0 Norwich
off course chances are the championship side's fielded weakened sides.

The lads battled on bravely and played quite well in patches.
The problem is when you are badly let down by your superstar striker who is as thick as pig-guano you have very little chance.
Three match ban, Roberts injured, squad looking very thin already.

What exactly did our "superstar striker" do?

dont think Ricketts did it maliciously but still he is one of the senior players he should know better.
For me though that wasn't the issue. We started poorly, got on top, scored a goal, then took our foot off the pedal and thought the rest of the game would be easy. thats were it went pear shaped for me. I think the boys seemed quiet laissez-faire tonight, and it was the Ricketts sending off that woke them up, but by that time they were back on level terms and playing fairly well.
On the night, i think it could have gone either way though. We had more than enough chances to win it or at least get an equalizer. Hughes missed a sitter right at the death!
All in all not overly dissapointed, after all it was only the League Cup and it is another game under the belt which is important this time of the season. Surprised not to see Boertien though?

From my seat in the F2G I unfortunately didn't see the Ricketts incident. Long ball forward from Clayton then suddenly their guy is on the deck by Ricketts.

Re: Darlington (Home) Carling Cup 1st Round Tuesday 12/8/08.
Well we have seen the Ricketts we all know, in just two games. Misses a sitter at Yeovil, scores a decent goal, then acts like an idiot and gets sent off. Welcome home Ricketts
Oh well we never wanted to win this competition. Maybe Mullen will play Reich instead of Nicholls now. Im worried about Roberts and Gerrard though, both making mistakes.
Maybe someone could enlighten us on what happened with Deeney, Gerrard and the fans???

Sounds like a variation on the old 'jump for the ball with accidentally trailing elbow' routine. :(

Re: Darlington (Home) Carling Cup 1st Round Tuesday 12/8/08.
Just back from the match - very disappointing. We started well but Ricketts behaved like a young inexperienced kid instead of a senior player.Deserved to be sent off for an elbow - he was our main threat and after that we never really looked like getting back into the game.
Darlingtons first goal was a well worked move and excellently taken - our defence at times was very soft.
A lot of work to be done on the training ground before Saturday i think - not a good start to our home games. :(

Re: Darlington (Home) Carling Cup 1st Round Tuesday 12/8/08.
Okay, still early in the season, still gaining full fitness, still getting to know each other, player sent off. All fair points. Yet still don't tell the story of a match that we were out battled and outh thought by a bog-standard League 2 side. We need a massive improvement in the coming weeks if we're not going to find ourselves playing catch-up. Ricketts sending off aside, we lacked any real attacking intent whatsoever. The lack of pace was frightening. Why was Ishy not brought on to frighten their full backs a bit?
As mentioned above with Ricketts suspended for 3(?) games and Roberts, Bradley, Mattis & Weston all possibly injured then the threadbare squad is evident for all to see. I still stick to my previous post that another striker is an absolute must if we're hoping to have any chance at a play off tilt this season.
I couldn't understand why it took until the 85th minute before we really started to have a go at them. I know Mullen has been out of the game for a few years but you don't think he still thinks it's a two legged tie do you?
We play like this on Saturday and Scunthorpe will think it's Christmas come early.

To be fair, playing the ball to feet isn't the most mysterious of tactics for a team with an extra man.

there keeper made at least 3 top saves and hughes missed a sitter if two had gone in i think you would be writing a different post-match report...
i dont agree we were out battled i think the lads held there own with 10 men - we were unlucky - but i do think that it is "still early in the season, still gaining full fitness, still getting to know each other, player sent off" were all massive factors
i do agreee that the game was crying out for ishmel and cover for the first 11 looks inexperienced and potentially weak.

Well after their second goal I was discusted at the way one of our fans stood up by the wall having a go at Gerrard! Good on Gerrard having a go back.He won't stay with us now, and to be honest I wouldn't blame him if he went.

totally agree. the lad has given a lot to this club, and could move on when he wants. He doesn't deserve some idiot having a go.

I wasnt there but have been told by three at the ground it was his fault for their second goal.
What should a fan do? "Oh well done Ant for throwing the game away"? :?
If he cant take criticism then tough luck. He's an arrogant barsteward anyway.
He did play well after according to reports so it couldnt have bothered him that much, all heat of the moment.
