Euro 2008

Tue Jun 10, 2008 12:13 am

Seeing as no one else seems bothered, I thought I would start the Euro 2008 thread.

The tournament really came alive tonight, Holland were absolutely outstanding, passing, movement, pace, control. awesome. They look a real threat now after that result, along with Portugal, they have the been the best by far.

Lets all raise the pointing finger and....

*laugh and point at france*

Alan Hansen said it was the worst game he has ever seen! How true! Awful!

Seen the name of the stadium where the Dutch game was played? Very schoolboy funny.

I see a whole load of parallels between the reaction to Holland/France today and the reaction to Argentina/England in 2006. Everyone was blabbing on about how Argentina were going to sweep all before them and England were a load of rubbish, in the end both went out in the quarter-finals. Starting well doesn't mean anything if you run out of steam.

Holland were superb to watch but their defence is awful and if Italy had juggled their strikers correctly (no del Piero? no Quagliarella? Toni playing rubbish) then they might have taken one of the chances that came their way. I was just as impressed with Germany, maybe more so, and they'd still be my tip to win.

Holland were great, but let's hope they can maintain the quality.

France - awful.

Spain tonight.

Laughing at any team in the tournament doesn't feel right somehow, given England's progress in it! :|

I agree and i'm still really gutted that England aren't in it :( But tbh i know the tournament has only just started but i think some of the games have been really poor and some matches i felt like fallin asleep.

I haven't managed to sit through a whole match yet. Just can't seem to get any enthusiasm going for this tournament at all. I miss the buzz of having to leave work early to get to see England's 5pm kick off..

I mean, I haven't even got a wallchart for this one!

Got to agree with everything said so far really. Holland were brilliant, Italy probably weren't as bad as the scoreline suggested but should still make changes for the next game. De Rossi, Del Piero, Cassano, Perrotta and Grosso should all start. Probably give Toni another chance after the season he has had, he can't play as badly as he did last night surely?

Looking forward to watching the Spaniards tonight, be interesting to see if they play the two big names up front or play 4-3-3/4-5-1 that the big team seem to play now.

Flicked in and out of the Spanish game but from what i did see, they were awsome and cut the ruskies apart at will. Torres and Villa just seem to know where each other are.
Has Torres's mystery injury returned as i missed when and why he went off, but didn't see him at any point 2nd half.
He's not got much chance of getting on the score sheet anyway....... Last time i checked, non of the games are due to be layed at Anfield

Really? Having watched one of the teams that proved to be better than us in qualifying absolutely ripped to pieces by the Spanish last night, I'm kind of glad we're not there to be embarrassed.

Italy will be lucky to get out of the group imho. They may still have a decent team, but itspainfuly immobile.

The dutch are good, they played well but they also rode their luck.

Spain, can they keep up the good stuff, cause their defending was really bad at times.

France are crap, people should of realised before the tournament, who have the ygot that REALLY scares an opposition manager anymore?

Portugal are the team to beat for me. Not even because of ronaldo.

And you never can write of the germans.

I've said all along that i think Romania might be the surprise team this year. Looking ok so far.

BTW, had a small bet on Portugal and Turkey to win tonight, single too, so as it stands Portugal are coming good :D

Well, Portugal won :D but Turkey are loosing :(

The state of the pitch for Swiss vs Turks is ridiculous. If it was a league game it would have been called off by now!

If Turkey v Republic of Czechoslovakia ends in a draw, a penalty shoot-out will decide who goes through. Should toss a coin, like in Italia 90.

As odd as it might sound, I still fancy Russia to do alright. The next game is massive for them as they have to beat Greece, but if they do that then they go into the last game against Sweden with a returning Arshavin, who is one of the best players in Europe at the moment.

Spain are the team I think will win the tournament though. They really do appear to have quality right through the heart of the side. Torres and Villa in particular are two strikers who are unplayable on their day.

Yep, that's correct RS. Here's what UEFA have said about Turkey - Czech Republic on Sunday in Geneve (Geneva) night:-

Article 7.08 reads: "If two teams which have the same number of points, the same number of goals scored and conceded play their last group match against each other and are still equal at the end of that match, the ranking of the two teams in question will be determined by kicks from the penalty mark, provided no other teams within the group have the same number of points on completion of all group matches."
