Best Film Ever

Thu Feb 17, 2005 9:28 am

One of my favourites, just because of the way it portrays the magic of film and cinemagoing is Cinema Paradiso, a modern classic.

Also like Leon, Citizen Kane, 1984, weird stuff by Mike Leigh (Nuts in May, Abagail's Party, Secrets and Lies, Naked etc.).

It's just too hard to chose though, too many great films.

As for porn titles my favourites are:

When Harry Wet Sally, 28 Gays Later, Almost Anus, An Officer and a Genitalman, Good Will Humping, Lawrence of a Labia, Saturday Night Beaver and The Empire Strokes Black.

Yes I know I am sad.

Haven't seen Cinema Paradiso, but have heard very good things about it. Musicals, by the way, preference is for modern ones - Chicago, Camelot, Sweet Charity and, of course, Cabaret, but always was a complete sucker for a Busby Berkeley film as well - 42nd Street and Golddiggers of 1933 (the "you're going out there an unknown, but you'll come back a star" type).

Action films - like them with a bit of humour as well, so Die Hard!

Best film ever? Casablanca of course. Didn't realise there was still a debate.

Distant supporting films would include African Queen, Fellini Satyricon, The Commitments.

Oo-er Neil, people will start to talk.

My wife thinks I'm sad because I have 3 DVDs of Casablanca, plus a VHS tape of it. Oh, and two books on the making of Casablanca..... And three books on the films of Humphrey Bogart. And a commemorative plate of the film. And several other things that I'm just too embarrassed to list here...

And in 1971 I saw Ingrid Bergman on stage in the West End. She was just as gorgeous then.....

Browsing the Beeb site, I'm shocked at how much good stuff I forgot. Stuff the Greatest Film Ever, I'm now having trouble doing a top ten, and that's just from the last three decades!

Can't believe no one has nominated "Weekend at Bernies" classic film - the sequel was a little poor though!
