Sheffield Utd (A) Checkatrade Trophy, Tue Oct 4th 7.45pm
The Checkatrade (EFL) Trophy is back with us and it's off to Bramall Lane to face the Blades, 4 days before not facing them in the League - that game has been postponed. Having already beaten Grimsby Town we find ourselves in the unusual position of being top of the table, as Sheffield United drew their opening game 0-0 against Leicester City's U-21 outfit.
There's little point in looking at previous form for this fixture - it's a distinct possibility that one (or both) teams may have an experimental look about them. The low degree of attraction for this competition renders it almost meaningless, and even the UTS equivalent message board in Sheffield doesn't rate the game a mention - they are far more concerned (3 pages so far) with the postponement of the League One fixture that would have been next weekend. Moan, moan, moan..........
I would like to see Bakayoko given 90 minutes for this one, possibly playing up front with Jackson in a 4-4-2. We may be able to call on the services of Osbourne and Cuvelier, and then again we may not - who can tell?
Because of the postponement (and the resultant degree of ill-feeling from Blades fans at the interruption of their meteoric rise up the table) there might be a little bit of needle, and I would be quite happy with a draw from this one - say 2-2 with Bakayoko and Osbourne on the mark.
Attendance at the Blades' most recent League One game was just a midges' short of 20,000 - don't think there will be anything like that for this game......

I think JW will want to progress in this cup. So I expect a strong side. I don't think the blades will be that bothered and see it more of a hinderence as you say Welsh with their meteoric rise up the league. so will stick a load of kids out. I'm going for a 2-0 with Baka getting both goals.

Sheffield U 1 - 3 Walsall
Bakayoko
Laird
Makris
We've got a break after this so might as well play a fairly strong side. Mind you, so do they!

Bar the chance to give Joe Edwards some time in the middle of the park, this fixture is pointless.

Am I right in assuming all those who mention the pointlessness of the trophy (which it is) wouldn't go to Wembley, should we make it to the final again?

Re: Sheffield Utd (A) Checkatrade Trophy, Tue Oct 4th 7.45pm
Nobody can predict this game depends on what teams are put out 2 weak teams 2 strong or if one club takes it seriously and the other not bothered.
I would use it to give the squad players a full 90 mins on pitch but if Whitney wants to give it a go we have extra week for players to get over injuries (not the usual suspects who will never play 2 games on trot).

Those "woodwork" saddlers seemed like they had probably been to more Walsall games in their life time than most of the kids that turn up every Saturday. I've got every respect for any fan that went that day, there were probably people there that hadn't been able to go for 10 or 20 years. Seemed to be families and older generation fans.

If you think that is true you are mental. People seem to be forgetting that the year we went to Wembley nobody went for the early rounds either. Couple of hundred to Rochdale was it?

I bought tickets for 14. Of those, only 2 or 3 would go next time.

This "competition" is pointless, and yes I (and the other 9 that were there)won't be going if we get to Wembley again.

Sheffield Utd 0 Walsall 1 (15 min) :D :D Laird scores for the Saddlers
Yellow card Sheffield Utd, 44 min
Half time and we lead 0-1. There has been 1 shot on target in the 1st half, and Laird scored from it. Shots off target are 4-3 Blades.
In the other game in our group, Grimsby Town and Leicester City U-21 are 0-0 at half-time.

it is clashing with the FA Cup Third Rd Replays - or is that qualifying round where Hastings are 1 up at Margate and Del Boy and Rodney are in the crowd having blown the coach up and Trigger has lost his Dolphin
and it is the Alan Turvey Trophy Rd two night where Tilbury are 1 up on Billericay

The history, passion, tradition and excitement of the Checkatrade Trophy is why I woke up at 2.40 this morning to stare blankly at this thread.

Including 100 Saddlers. An incredible number, when you consider we will take no more than 300 for the rearranged midweek league fixture in November.
Quite why they've gone, I have no idea.

Is that not just our injured players sitting in the away end?
