Gillingham (H) League One, Oct 31st, 3pm
After the excitement (?) of the 1st round draw of the F.A. Cup, it's back to League One business with a top-of-the-table encounter with Gillingham. Motivation for the Saddlers comes from the knowledge that if we win this one we're back in 1st place. Gills' manager Justin Edinburgh is on record as expressing surprise at how well their season has gone so far, in view of their comparative lack of financial clout when compared to other League One clubs. Having said that, he did make six permanent signings during the summer, and his side have yet to lose at home. And yet...last month they managed to lose at Barnsley and Colchester. Best not to antagonise them though - Fleetwood tried that by taking an early lead and Gillingham replied with 5 goals!! They are a free-scoring team with 29 League One goals scored so far (4 more than ourselves), but they've conceded 15 (3 more than we have); leading scorers are Bradley Dack and Rory Donnelly, with 6 goals each. One player who won't feature for Gillingham is midfielder Josh Wright, currently banned for 3 games after a recent red card that Gillingham unsuccessfully appealed against. Their recent form:
3 Oct Oldham Athletic (H) League One, Drew 3-3
6 Oct Luton Town (H) F.L. Trophy, Won 2-1
10 Oct Chesterfield (A) League One, Won 1-3
17 Oct Crewe Alexandra (A) League One, Won 0-1
20 Oct Scunthorpe United (H) League One, Won 2-1
24 Oct Southend United (H) League One, Drew 1-1
Dean Smith's team selection still largely depends on the injury situation. No doubt George Evans will continue to stand in for Sam Mantom, and we may well have the services of our first-choice goalkeeper. It looked as though Andy Taylor was possibly carrying an injury against Colchester United, and some rest and recuperation may well be best for him - Rico Henry would be a more than capable replacement.
Prediction? Very hard to say, bearing in mind our generosity at Colchester last week-end. Hopefully Dean will have got his "mean" defence back to normal, and if we can squeeze this one 1-0 (or more) I'll be very pleased - Tom Bradshaw to score.

We'll follow the 4-4 draw with a good solid 0-0 in front of 4850 fans 700 travelling up from Kent.

Really like to see a positive starting line up here with a 4-1-4-1
Etheridge
Demetriou
Oconnor
Downing
Henry
Chambers
Lalkovic
Morris
Evans
Sawyers
Bradshaw
2-1 saddlers, sexy tom is due and I think Milan will keep the momentum going.
Saturdays can't come quick enough lately

We have a good record at home against this lot and I think we'll beat them 2-1, with Bradshaw scoring a brace, in front of 4,987, including 532 Gills.

Fancy a 2-1 win here, Gillingham are getting late goals here and there but aren't apparently playing that well, they won't last the pace for automatic promotion.
I quite like the team in the big games this year, the performances in the Coventry and Burton home games were both excellent, those two were top of the table clashes at the time so a good mentality to have going into this game.

Walsall 1 Gillingham 3 putting a nail in the coffin of automatic promotion...as all the chasers start to catch up, Gillingham score 2 in last 4 mins.

0-0. Stafflers to burn an effigy of Sallian at half time.
Sallian to send his butler Grimes on to extinguish the flames.

Should be a top game...
I think it'll be a back to normal performance from us (after last weeks circus) with plenty of possession and shots on target - we'll get 2 I reckon (Sawyers and Bradshaw)
They will obviously get their late late goal as it seems to be contractual for them this season! Just hope it's not 2-1 with a minute left
2-1 with 4876 there (702 from Kent) :o

Out of all the teams in the football league Walsall have beaten Gillingham the most, 40 times. Good news? Nay, out of all the teams in the football league Gillingham have beaten us the most, 43 times.
I fancy us to add to the tally.
Walsall 3 - 2 Gillingham
Bradshaw
Sawyers
Lalkovic

I'll be there for a home match at last!
Please do it for me lads, don't let the home hoodoo, and me being there, spoil it!!!
I'll go for 3-2 home win, the Gills being 1-0 up at half time, we come out and run 'em ragged until they score another in the dying minutes (that's the law!)

3-2 Walsall. Late goal from us.
Unsure on how many Gillingham will fetch, it's a long way as is 95% of their away fixtures  500 would be a fair effort.

Interesting facts Soton. In recent years it's always seemed to be a nailed on draw this fixture.Soton Saddler wrote:Out of all the teams in the football league Walsall have beaten Gillingham the most, 40 times. Good news? Went to check this website and that shows the last 7 have been drawn, hence my perception. I think the pattern could be retained. 1-1.

Walsall supporters didn't deserve a player of Grime's quality..... there are always those in history who are wasted by the ignorance of those who surround them

I think if it ends in a draw again the football league should retire the fixture. We'll get a fair share of 3 points depending on who's at home. Starting next year in the Championship (wouldn't be fair for them to get the 3 points in the away leg!).
