Germany.
How did it go so right?
Oh yes, they planned intelligently and have loads of coaches, whereas the FA are just a bunch of useless onanists with a penchant for lining their own pockets from the Premiership.

I think it's the url you use. It works for me if the link is in the simple "http://www.youtube.com" format, rather than "https" or "youtu.be"

OK, So far the best i have seen are the Germans & Dutch, Chile look very raw but useful. Brazil have'nt impressed at all.
England played well but it could all be over in an hours time. Italy will be good for the quarters / semis.
Discuss ?

England will win tonight and will reach the last 8. Spain, after an poor start, will finish strongly to lift the cup.

We were out-run, out-headed, out-passed, out-everything. Uruguay seemed to want it more than we did.....
Oh well, back to the cricket (England and Warwickshire), and then wait for the League One season!!

For 30 minutes in the second half we absolutely destroyed them. Got the goal and then lost the plot.
By the way, we should have been playing against 10 men for most of the match.

Spot on.
Our players will go back to being World class as soon as the Premier League starts again though. So overated.

Re: WORLD CUP 2014
Is anyone really surprised in this country everything is over hyped that's why Hodgson was more or less forced to give the younger player's a chance ie baines for Cole jagielka for terry. Lallana, barkley, Henderson. The way I see it baines is and never will be as good as Cole. Terry is still better than jagielka and the other 3 mentioned are totally unproven this is the world cup not a rehearsal we needed to play our best players and we didn't.

Re: WORLD CUP 2014
Makes no odds who our best players are. Truth is, they aint good enough and haven't been for a long time.
Even the one thing we always had, passion, seems to have gone. Uruguay wanted it so much more.

There is no world class player in the England team.
What England player would say get in th German team?
Possibly Cahill in defence, no one in midfield and no one in attack.
There lies the problem.

Re: WORLD CUP 2014
I agree Sheff - but Cahill isn't anywhere near World Class either. Just forget the fact he plays for Chelsea!!
The problems were all over but particularly in defence. Suarez should never have been allowed to score EITHER goal.
And we have no bite up front.

Re: WORLD CUP 2014
I hate to get on a 'sack the manager' bandwagon, but what now does Hodgson offer if we do go out? He is a gent, and i'm glad he was appointed over Redknapp, but going forward I can't see how he can get this England team working. He largely picked the squad/team I think most of us would pick, and played the formation I personally love watching, but it seemed to be against his nature. He is, and always has been, a more defensive manager and you could see that in the way the team played. On paper, it looked attacking, but in reality it was 4 attackers (often attacking as individuals) with a gap in midfield that a tank could drive through. To play that style, it has to be high tempo, high line and non stop closing down but out of the two teams, it was them who pressed hardest.
As for the defence, I think we just have to accept they're rubbish. Johnson is terrible, Baines can't defend and Cahill and Jagielka are nowhere near World Class. Who else do we pick? Shaw, Flanagan and Stones in future years but other than that there is very little out there for now.
It's a difficult job. There are no better players to choose and so it become about tactics and coaching going forward and accepting we are not that good. Hopefully there will be patience with the inexperienced players going forward though. Hopefully they can push on, but there seems to be a ceiling that our players hit and never get past. Look at Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney - they've been average for England and for some reason never kick on to the levels the star players of other teams do.

That is a rather misleading figure though, as you need to distinguish the percentage of european and non european players.
I believe we can restrict the number of European players as we are in the EU?
Therefore, you will need to look at non european players if you are looking into the possibility of restrictions, like Greg Dyke was hoping to do.
In all honesty will it make a massive difference?
I think not.

With Costa Rica you can clearly see a team that is greater than the sum of its parts. With England you see a bunch of highly paid individuals on a paid for vacation.
For me, the last time that England played as a team was at Euro 96. Remember how we destroyed Holland?

Re: WORLD CUP 2014
Ok... We no longer have any world class players I agree. But for me even when we had world class players we never ever played as a team with tactical awareness.
It's about playing as a team with tactical awareness, closing players down and realising that this is probably the one and only time you may make it on the world stage and playing until you sweat blood!!!!
How many players from Chile or Costa Rica would get in the German team? None..
And yet they have shown us (the nation that invented the game) the way forward.
