Full time, and a win for us....I know it's only 0-1, but it's still 3 points and puts us one point away from the play-offs. :D :D :D

I can see now why all the moaners were saying we should have signed Reach, Ugwu and Eaves on loan like Shrewsbury. If Shrewsbury can sign such prolific forwards who take all the gilt-edged chances that come their way, WHY CAN'T WE?? Smith out, Westcarr out, etc.

Eaves and Ugwu were not effective.

"One point away from the play-offs" lasted all of the 2 minutes it took for Bristol City to go 0-1 down at home to Rotherham :(
Back to 4 points away, as it stands.

Disappointing result.
When will Smith realise that if we only score one goal the opposition only have to score two goals to win the game?

I agree, must be one the worst seasons in our 125 year history. When I started watching Walsall, just after our third successive FA Cup win and our famous double winning season, I couldn't have imagined the situation we now find ourselves in.
WDDL in the league before today. Good job we won otherwise I would have started a "Smith Out" thread.

Re: Shrewsbury Town (A) League One Sat 14th Dec, k/o 1pm
Good 3 points but the usual suspects using it as justification for us not needing a striker, whereas if you were at the game you'd see how obvious it is.
Walsall should have been 3-0 up at half time and the game should have been dead and buried. I lost count of the amount of times the ball got crossed or passed in to the central area of the penalty box, each time dropping to an empty space where a true 'striker' would be.
And all this BS about it changing our style of play - we're constantly trying to play Westcarr in behind the defence but he hasn't got the pace to beat even a poor Shrews defence, and consequently got himself caught offside 6 or 7 times today.
Shrewsbury then had a header cleared off the line and Eaves missed a sitter from 2 yards - think Kanu for WBA a few years back but far worse.
Great win but on another day this could have bee a draw or defeat despite us being the better side - the lack of a goalscorer up top is as clear as day and it's putting pressure on the defence to keep clean sheets and consequently their performances are suffering from an in characteristic nervousness.

Whingers are completely missing the point as normal. The point being (to spell it out for the hard of thinking) that of course if would be great to have a new striker if they were better than we have already. Shrewsbury - a team with a similar (or slightly bigger) budget than us - have been trying to find a striker all season. They've signed several, none of whom have been better than Westcarr. They had two loanees up front today; one was awful, the other missed a sitter. Give me Westcarr over that any day. If we can get a great new striker, fantastic. If we can't, then we should appreciate that what we've got, on our budget, is already pretty good.

Re: Shrewsbury Town (A) League One Sat 14th Dec, k/o 1pm
I have been proved wrong by this 1-0 victory over the mighty Shrewsbury Town. Obviously there are no problems in the attacking ethos & style of Walsall....this victory demonstrates 1-0 is enough...as no other team will score 1 or 2 goals against Walsall...and Walsall are guaranteed to always get that "...FIRST GOAL..." Yipeee now we can look forward to winning the title.
Leaving the retaliatory sarcasm aside (which I direct to those who think not maximizing goal scoring is a sensible strategy to win a football match), LALKOVIC has to stay if Walsall are to have any chance of making the play offs.....(and that is a slim chance). This, as seeing as there seems to be no efforts to bring anyone else in.
Lalkovic needs to be played as the central striker as he is the only player with the speed and finishing ability combined. Hemmings can't finish (at the moment) and Westcarr is too slow (use him as the support behind). Lalkovic looks the most likely to score when they manage to get him in half dangerous positions. But they need to release the ball rather than put their head down and walk into the first defender like a prize plum....or wait until all the defenders arrive and play the ball backwards like a prize pot plant.
KEEP LALKOVIC....and keep putting the ball in space in front of him to attack....and tell him to use 'kick past & accelerate' more rather than step-overs.

Re: Shrewsbury Town (A) League One Sat 14th Dec, k/o 1pm
Just got back in.
First half was very similar to last season's game at the Very Gay Meadow, with the lack of clinical finishing proving our downfall.
In the second half we stepped it up a gear and got a very well taken goal from Milan. Superb.
Westcarr and Sawyers were caught offside about 30 times between them.
Shrewsbury are woeful and have to be relegated. Tom Eaves (Number 24) is possibly one of the worst strikers I have ever seen.
Their fans are crap.
WE NEED TO SIGN A STRIKER.
