Port Vale (H) League One Saturday 30th Nov, 3pm
We welcome our near-neighbours from the Potteries, who are one point and one place below us in the table. Micky Adams is currently in his second spell of managing the side, and two of his probable team will be known to us (although for different reasons....) - Chris Shuker was with us on loan for a time, and of course Vale now have the services of Lee Hughes who played for 29 minutes last night at home to Preston, having no shots but committing one foul. Keep it up, Lee! Vale's last six League One games:
22 Oct Crawley (A) WON 0-3
26 Oct Gillingham (H) WON 2-1
2 Nov Swindon (A) LOST 5-2
16 Nov Shrewsbury (H) WON 3-1
23 Nov Crewe Alex (A) WON 1-2
26 Nov Preston N.E. (H) LOST 0-2
Leading scorers Myrie-Williams (6) and Pope (5) both played against Preston last night but the whole team seem to have had a bad day at the office, losing to 10 men. Interesting comment on their UTS equivalent came from a fan who said that they hadn't won a League match against Walsall since 1947 - long may that continue!!!
We should have enough to get 3 points from this, and we are due a win. Vale have conceded 28 goals in the League so far - that's the highest in the top half of the table, and higher than four sides in the bottom half. I think a 2-0 forecast is reasonable, with bone idle Westcarr and a recalled Sawyers doing the business.

How are these only 1 point behind us in the league? Have we had points deducted or something? When we played in the league cup they looked an average league 2 side at best.
Easy saddlers win 3-1, else I'll have to re-examine my core understanding of what constitutes a good and bad football team.

My thoughts exactly. The answer is because we've missed a lot of chances to secure wins at the likes of Crawley, Colchester, MK Dons etc.

2-0 to us. Sawyers and Westcarr, sexy football to rule.
If we lose though i'll be highlighting key bits in CAPITALS (salian style) to EMPHASISE my ramblings.

A narrow 1-0 win [Butler] against the Fail, in front of a crowd of 5,645, including 1,500 from Burslem.
This will be a good old fashioned hard fought derby with our friends from North Staffordshire, with The Saddlers, as is usual in these type of matches, playing most of the football. Well at least since the 70's, anyway

I wouldn't be cocky heading into this one, they are a physical side that will be very hard to beat. 4 wins in 6 and 4 in 5 before losing at home to PNE Tuesday. I expect it to be a scrappy game where we struggle to get our game flowing, but do just enough to shade a 1-0 or 2-1 victory. ST Holders with friends for £5 isn't it? They'd sold 800 about 2 weeks ago for this game so I'd expect them to sell the entire end and perhaps a chunk of the side.

would be nice to see a good gate , a win could take us into the top 6 heading into next next league game v shrews. would set that up very nicely.

We'll win thanks to a gust of wind shooting a boiling hot cup of tea from the OAP stand into Lee Hughes' face who is standing on the line, and because of the burns he misses a short corner whipped into the near post by Baxendale. Purkiss the stallion then stampedes over Lee Hughes' head in celebration of the goal. Two minutes later, a sneeze from one of the creatures from Stoke in the away end will send their goalies goal kick into the back of his own net, with the entire lower and upper tiers being covered in mucus and blood filled snot.

I worry about this one slightly just because of how physical it's likely to be. That said, we overcame that against Stevenage and seem to have found that bit of extra confidence at home that was lacking around September time.
I'll go for a solid 2-1 win. Mantom and Lalkovic to score.

Sounds weird but the performance of the ref in the first ten/fifteen minutes will be important. If rough-house tactics are encouraged through a lack of suitable punishment then we will find them very difficult to breakdown, we (fans, players and management) will become frustrated and we could be on the end of a Bradford-esque result.
But I think the ref will be strong, we'll score early and I'll snigger my way past black and white scarves all the way to Junction 16. 3-0, Westcarr with a bone-idle and hapless hat-trick.

Re: Port Vale (H) League One Saturday 30th Nov, 3pm
The importance of the first goal has been hotly debated on another thread, and statistics would suggest that it's highly significant in this match.
Vale have only dropped 3 points all season from a winning position, where as we have only dropped 2 (v Notts Co), which is the best record in the league.
Similarly, both teams have won every game in which they have been leading at half time - 5 occasions for us and 3 for Vale. Interestingly, only two teams have been leading less often than Vale at half time, suggesting they may not be fast starters but may be the kind of team that likes to wear down the opposition. We all kind of knew this anyway; balls in the box, pressing game, physical approach etc.

But that would mean a single goal would be enough to win the match
Sillyann would have you believing it needed to be 2-0 or 3-0 before it could be classed as winning
I'm also going for a solid 1-0, just to piss him off. Westcarr to score :D

FIFA 14 says 2 - 0 The Saddlers. Westcarr in the first half. Hemmings comes on in the second half for Lalkovic and scores from long range.

A massive 5212 to see this massive derby , a real fashioned rivalry from when men were men , bovril couldnt be eaten by vegetarians, oxtail soup was served piping hot and chips were cooked in beef dripping and served in yesterdays newspaper, the not so good old days. Anyway a 2-0 win for the sexy saddlers.

ooops didn't mean to offend them
I am genuinely bewildered how they can be so high up in the league. If they've improved since we played them in the cup all credit to them.
I actually quite like Port Vale. Kudos to their fans.
Still be gutted if it's not an easy win for us tomorrow though. :o

Starting line-up against Port Vale:
O'Donnell
Chambers
Taylor
Chambers
Downing
Butler
Lalkovic
Mantom
Westcarr
Sawyers
Baxendale
Substitutes: Purkiss, Featherstone, Hemmings, Lewis, Benning, Hewitt, Gray
This line-up could well satisfy Sally Ann's demands for goals, goals, and more goals.......

All very quiet after 10 minutes......all I can give you is Rotherham 1 Gillingham 0 (which, as it stands, puts us 3 points away from the play-offs)
