Really think Hewitt being dropped was very harsh on him, he works hard, wins balls in the air - and when he gets a half decent opportunity he will slot it in the net (Wolves in the cup.) The problem was when he was playing that we were playing the 4141 formation, where he has no support and is doing the near impossible job of holding the play up with no direct support, maybe him in this formation may give him the chances and space to actually have some shots - which he never did when on his own up top.
I don't think we have seen the best of him yet.

Seriously, we can all forget the idea of a striker, cus Deano dow think we need one!? :?
Good point today but we should be well into the play off's, however, with a 'goals for' tally equivalent to a relegation team, we will certainly need to get more 'points' to stay in contention! :(
Lets see what happens at Bramhall Lane................UTS
Based on what? Our average attendance? Our budget ?
I get your point obviously without being silly, but I miss having Bernie around to post useless statistics. I'd like him to post the league table this time last season. We will bring players in, on loan, when the time is right. They could be crucial, as for now we are ticking along, nothing spectacular, but take a long hard think about what the previous 4 years had been like before Christmas last year. It's not that bad you know.

If we could get the right player, great, but it's harder than looking for the chap with the most goals in the fewest games.
I'll give Messi a bell; see if he's interested.

It's a hard one. Especially as I'm quite pro-Westcarr.
I think the only way you could replace Westcarr is with someone who is as good as him in a link up sense, but better at finishing.
I actually think we should stick with him unless Smith signs somebody who he thinks is better than Westcarr.

Take away Grigg's penalty count and his total for the season was 12. I expect Westcarr to beat that.

I hope you're right, but my gut feeling based on what I've seen so far is that he's an average League Two striker at best. Yes, he put that chance away really well at Wolves, but generally, he never seems to get close to dangerous scoring positions. And given that he offers very little in terms of bringing others into play, I'm not convinced there's a strong enough argument for him to be asked to do anything other than try to run down tired defenders for the last 10 minutes of matches.

It's quite ludicrous to suggest we should leave out Westcarr for Hewitt, as based on what I have seen Hewitt has no where near as much quality as Westcarr. His goal at the Wolves was indeed superb technique. He runs around a lot, this seems to appeal to some fans, whilst he is doing that, Westcarr is cleverly pulling defenders out of position, or getting in to superb positions himself.
I'd like Hewitt to prove me wrong, but I don't see it personally, he's not the answer, or he would be playing.

And people wonder why we're not getting many posters on this board as of late.... Negative comment after negative comment. I'd have took a point at Crawley before the game, was always going to be tough. Whether we need a striker or not, why do you all have to keep moaning about it? I'm happy with what we've got to be honest just wish you guys would just get behind the players we have fully instead of moaning about Westcarr and critiquing his every move, absolutely pathetic.
Get behind the players we have now and if Deano wants to get a striker in then we will support him as well.

As for what I said, it was that if we play route 1, which we did in the first half on Saturday, then we would be better playing Hewitt than either Westcarr or Sawyers and that is definitely true.
Second half was much better and we tried to play our normal game.

I think on the whole its mostly positive on here, with good reason. The football's good to watch and the season is progressing nicely. Improvements are needed in the side though to take us even further and I don't see why suggesting we need more fire power upfront is considered on here by some as some blasphemous crime which should result in you been burnt at the stake for even thinking of such a thing.

At the end of the day, we do well with the resources that we've got. We're a team mostly made up of local youngsters and lower league rejects. The way we are playing is superb to watch and mostly enjoyable. We're not perfect, but there's not a game at the moment that we go into that I don't think we have a chance of winning. That's a credit to Dean, ROK and the players themselves.

We are having a very good season. We have an excellent management team. We are "there or thereabouts" to employ a useful cliché, playing some very good football with a team that might well get better. We have some promising youngsters coming through, if not quite ready to step up. What's not to like?
Well, every fan would like us to be where Leyton Orient are! I certainly would. I, along with most others, retain the right to make suggestions for refinements that might get us there. It's highly unlikely, of course, but not beyond the realms of possibility. And the discussions and banter on the board are interesting and entertaining. What's not to like about this season? And, yes, the team deserve better crowds and, by and large, better support, but, hey, this is Walsall. That'll come when we are in the Championship. Possibly.

I agree Derbs. I don't understand the stock response of "We're so much better placed than last season, so don't moan". Yes, we are, we're all aware of that and are all happy to bits about it. It doesn't mean, though, that we should accept (possibly) missing out on a play off spot just fro the need of a goalscorer just because of that fact. I though it was about striving for constant improvement, not restin on our laurels just because we're better off than we historically were.

My comments are not aimed at posters that post constructive criticism. I am always happy to have a reasoned debate. I'm referring to those who rarely post anything other than negativity, who become erstwhile when things are going well and then reappear when things get sticky.

Who's to say signing a striker wouldn't make the team worse? I can see scenarios where this could be the case. The point is, we are much better placed than this time last year, and there is still money available I believe. I'm almost certain loan additions will be made later in the season, it's served us quite well in the past, no reason why it can't this season. Just keep ticking a long nicely, and who knows.

Absolute poppycock to say a good Striker would do us harm.
The mistake of not strengthening when we are 'hot', has been our downfall in the past.

There are more positive posts than negative on here these days. It's quiet because the usual negative suspects ay got a lot to say.
I think on the whole its mostly positive on here, with good reason. The football's good to watch and the season is progressing nicely. Improvements are needed in the side though to take us even further and I don't see why suggesting we need more fire power upfront is considered on here by some as some blasphemous crime which should result in you been burnt at the take for even thinking of such a thing.
I think these 'negative' posters should be named and shamed. How dare they! Who do they think they are? and while we're at it all those positive posters can expose themselves as well for failing to recognise any other realistic and balanced opinion and posting 'comments'! And while we're at it what about those fence sitters that infest this site, nothing to say until it has happened. And while we're still at it, what about those posters who pretend to have some inside knowledge about Dean Smith's breakfast cereal choice and posting dribble about plans, players inside legs and 'expert' inside information.
Hope that has covered everyone apart from the nutters and those that use the message board to say what they like, whenever they like, to who ever they like without having to conform to some imaginary rules made up to suit someone's argument :D
Have we signed a striker yet? PERIOD

Looked at the highlights and, well, that miss from Westcarr was simply criminal!

We haven't signed a striker yet.
We've already got one, though, so don't spit your tampon.

Fray Bentos is God! wrote:It's a hard one. Especially as I'm quite pro-Westcarr.
I think the only way you could replace Westcarr is with someone who is as good as him in a link up sense, but better at finishing.
I actually think we should stick with him unless Smith signs somebody who he thinks is better than Westcarr.
Blimey, well done for arriving at that conclusion. The thought process must have been err...............................difficult eg
1. Westcarr = striker
2. A.N.Other striker is better than Westcarr
3. Sign A.N.Other striker
4. Sit back, remove tampon from brain and celebrate brilliant analysis with like minded chums.
