Port Vale (A) League Cup R1 - Tuesday 06/08/2013
We travel to the Fail on Tuesday for what's currently known more correctly as the Capital One Cup - note the kick off is 7.30pm, not 7.45pm like all the others!
No real form to report this early in the season. Vale got off to a reasonable start in the League having been promoted from League 2 last season, holding the mighty Brentford at home 1-1 and preventing their international superstar Will Grigg from scoring. Ticket prices have been reported as £14 on a Vale forum, and there has been a BOGOF promotion where you have to quote codes printed in the local papers - that probably only applies to home supporters.
The match referee is Andy Haines, who some may remember as the official in charge when we played Sheffield Wednesday away in March last year...when we would have got a 1-2 win but for Wendy equalising in the 95th minute!!
Forecast? We're certainly due for a cup run (remember those?), and having opened our League account reasonably convincingly against Tranmere I'll go for a 0-2 win.

Kick off is 7:45 by the way, not 7:30 according to West mids police. Going for a sneaky 1-0, sides separated by abit of magic from Lalkovic

It's quoted as 7.30pm on the BBC website - not that they're very reliable at the best of times.........

2:55 PM - 2 Aug 13
Walsall FC WMPolice @WMPWalsallFC 2 Aug
From @WFCOfficial definately 7:45 kick off on Tuesday at Port Vale @BescotBanter #saddlers

Re: Port Vale (A) League Cup 1st round 6 Aug 7.30pm
I'm going against the habits of a lunchtime and I'm going to make a forecast:
Vale 2 Walsall 3
Scorers?
4 players and a special constable from Stoke drafted in at the last minute to replace an armadillo who is required by the Border Security Service for other duties.
He came on the pitch to pick up a broken fartball and deflected a corner past O'Donnell, purely accidentally, of course.
Free doughnuts at half time to anyone who remembers Lobby Ludd.
You heard it here, first.
So you did.

I'd love to say we will progress but we have the worst referee in history on Tuesday, namely Andy Haines :x

Some reports of Brentford fans having difficulties getting into the ground, so allow yourselves plenty of time to get through the turnstiles.

Also reports locally of Brentford fans being attacked before the match on Saturday, near Longport Railway Station apparently.
Whilst I doubt that many (if any) Walsall fans will be using Longport Station, please be aware that Vale have a few neanderthals.

Have some evolved recently then?

No, they haven't evolved, genetically they can't evolve.
They mutate..

Nobody really wants to go to Port Vale.
I'll go with a 1-2 away win. Don't want the misery of another penalty shootout. We're worse than England at that.

Re: Port Vale (A) League Cup R1 - Tuesday 06/08/2013
Looking forward to this.
I think Smith might change it up a bit. Not because there was anything wrong with Saturday's performance, but we've got a long season ahead of us where we don't want to suffer the burn out we appeared to last year and we had some players on the bench on Saturday who will be itching for a start with maybe a point to prove that they could take Saturday's high bar and take it even higher.
So I think Sawyers and Hewitt might get a game with Milan switching to the wing in place of Baxo with Westcarr kept in reserve. Purkiss might also be given a start. If I were a Vale full-back and had the prospect of facing Milan and Purkiss on one wing with Benning and Hemmings on the other, I'd worry.
However we line up, I fancy us on the vast expanses of Vale Park. 2-1 in front of 3,750 with 612 of us having travelled in varying directions on the M6 to see the lads.

Do you really fancy us? Cos I don't. Not cos they are better than us, I don't think they are at all (although I have little evidence either way)
This is the cup, and we just don't do cups these days, I think he will change it around a little, and I also think we will get turned over sadly. Not exactly a positive way of looking at things, but it is just a feeling I have. Hopefully I will be wrong and we'll brush them aside with ease.

Port Vale 1 - 2 Walsall AET
Butler and Sawyers with the goals, good Port Vale team - expecting this to be a tough test. Everyone will want to be basking off the glory of Bradford's run last season.
Attendance 4,883 with 412 from us. They get quite good attendances and have a good deal on.

Once upon a time, it was a bigger game than Shrewsbury. Walsall fans don't seem to have the love for this fixture like they used to for some reason.

I still despise them. Vile horrible scummy place with vile horrible scummy people. We owe them after last season. Hope we play them off the park. Have a sneaky feeling we might actually have a bit of a cup run this season.

I guess it will finish like this:-
1-2 Matias, Fenton
7640 (643 Saddlers)
Its always a bit nervy at Port Frail. On and off the pitch??

3-0 Walsall to stop vale's early season optimism in its tracks before the clay heads get going.
I expect a decent crowd they had just under 8000 on Saturday. I reckon 5995 with 550 from the Black Country

I do. I think we'll have a cup run this year. Same as you in that it is a purely gut feeling. Mine's based on Saturday and the all round attitude and good feeling around the place. I also think that a decent little atmosphere in Vale Park will motivate the players more than those deathly and cold nights at The Bescot where barely 2,000 turn up to see us struggle against sides from lower down the league.

:D Just had the best news I have had in bleedin ages, have completely changed my mind, we are going to slam them in to the ground 5-0.
If we could do what Bradford did last season, Including beating them bastards in claret and blue in the semi final, I think I could retire as a Walsall fan knowing nothing else could ever come close. Those are the dreams that keep us going as Walsall fan's aren't they ?

Yes it is that, the words coming out of that mans mouth today was almost as good a feeling as when Byfield's shot skimmed off the grass and in to the net in Cardiff
Can't wait for tomorrow now.
