Foundation Year was the best thing I ever did. I left in 87 I was a mature student inmy late 20s at the time. I was in Hawthornes and read Politics and Sociology- with chemistry and History and Philosophy.

The Pogues were on over at Hawthornes and Billy Bragg in the main union building. I became a good friend of Rosemary O'Kane prof. of Politics.

I loved Keele Hall, did you?

I enjoyed Foundation Year. I went to Keele to do Maths and Philosophy: switched to Maths and History. Wish I'd switched to History and Politics, but I probably wouldn't be where I am today if I had.

I was a Barnes resident, first the bed sits and then a shared flat (I can't believe we managed to live 4 people to a flat that size, but it was fun). I left (was kicked out) in '87. Saw BB and the Pogues: weren't the Pogues at a "Hawthorns Ball" or some such event? The grounds at Keele were great; the Hall was a beautiful building.

I was heavily involved in the Student Union politically. I didn't get to know many of the professors, particularly the Maths ones. You can't really if you don't show up. I was friendly with a couple of the history lecturers, but haven't spoken to any since.

Let's hope i'm not. And i don't say people don't have to be friendly to each other but i try to be it the whole year and not just because it's x-mas or new year.

So to end my reply i wish you all a very happy 24th of november!!!

There's not been a decent Christmas song for donkey's years, in other words.

Exactly my choice and sentiments, Exile.

I will third that. Nothing like the Pogues dulceit tones coming from the car stero

My personal favourite though, would have to be Fairytale Of New York

Honourable mentions go to:
Dean Martin's version of "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" (what a superb voice he had!), same goes for Bing Crosby's White Christmas.
Santa Baby! (anyone remember that one?) who sang it? Was it Ms Monroe?

The ONE that I hate:

Mud - Lonely This Christmas -
That song is sooooo depressing!!!

Not forgetting my vote too ^^^

HK Saddler --were you the very tall guy with the goth like busy black hair?

Do yoy remenber the Russian lecture on Myakovsky(sp) and the really good blind lecturer of greek studies.
Whilst I was there Ted Heath came and dear old Tam of Malvinas fame came. Did you book them, then?

I used to go the the International Relations Club on Thursday evenings did you?

Because I was a mature student I actually worked whilst I was at Keele I did a fantastic course on Revolution.

OK then HK how did you get to go to HK and what do you do there?

The one by the Darkness is good, as is Fairytale of New York, Merry Xmas Everybody and I wish it could be Xmas every day by Wizard.

The rest are pants - in particular everything by Cliff, that terrible one by Wham that I have to suffer cos the missus likes it, the even worse one by Mariah Carey and the band aid ones.

The Goth was called Mark Ellicot I think and was a rabid right wing tory. He was entertaining though. I was never on the Union Committee, but ran the labour club. I booked Tam but obviously not Ted.

I do remember the blind lecturer from the FY lecture he gave. There was a history lecturer who started off by singing Good King Wenceslas. I don't particularly remember a Russian lecturer though.

I didn't go to IR club regularily, but I seem to remember going to the occaisional lecture put on by it though.

I came to HK to visit my brother for a month or two 14 years ago. He's now in KL, but I'm still here. I run my own small company gathering and analysing data for two clients, one in Australia and one in the US.

Where do I start?! Love em all.

Apart from the ones mentioned above I like A Spaceman Came Travelling and In Dulci Jubilo but Fairytale of New York is my favourite.

And nearly all of the rest (especially "A spaceman came travelling") don't? Christmas is a crime as far as music is concerned and always has been. Little Jimmy Osmond? Renee and Renato? Mr Blobby? Bob The Builder? Try proper ones, like Jethro Tull's Christmas Song:-

Once in royal david’s city stood a lonely cattle shed,
Where a mother held her baby.
You’d do well to remember the things he later said.
When you’re stuffing yourselves at the christmas parties,
You’ll just laugh when I tell you to take a running jump.
You’re missing the point I’m sure does not need making
That christmas spirit is not what you drink.

So how can you laugh when your own mother’s hungry,
And how can you smile when the reasons for smiling are wrong?
And if I just messed up your thoughtless pleasures,
Remember, if you wish, this is just a christmas song.

(hey! santa! pass us that bottle, will you? )

Sums up the whole hypocratic season.

Fairytale of new york is a cracker but my fave is probably Boney M's "marys boy child" a song that actually has something to do with the real meaning of christmas.

That was the first record I ever bought, as a young lad - a Christmas present for my mother (She loved that record - can't say I was too keen on it myself, though).

No doubt for me, like Exile mine is Fairytale of New York, and as someone else said above, RIP Kirsty McColl - I still shed tears over her tragic death whenever I hear the song.

Also, like Exile, my second is "Stop the Cavalry".

Still love Wizard as well though - classic !
