From The Express and Star

Personally I'm pleased we're trying to play football with the ball on the floor. I'd rather watch that in a league below than continue to try and cling on to League One status by hoofing it, trying to nick the odd goal from a set piece and then trying to hang on for the final whistle.

I just hope that on a rainy November Tuesday night away at some God-forsaken ground, Smith holds true to what he espouses above.

We still need a striker though.

Fully agree. I was pleased to see Holden in particular getting in the box on Saturday and he did appear to be marshalling the midfielders to cover him and Butler when they went up for set pieces (shouldn't Butler being do that?). However, and I have cliched this elsewhere, we need someone with a presence up front to give us something different. Playing to feet is great, but sometimes a bloody great hoof up to the big striker to hold the ball up for the titches catch up can be effective when you are 1 - 0 down with five minutes to go.

What all this call for a striker is about Mr. Smith is not a desire for a big lump of a target man, but a striker with some presence and more importantly nous to unlock a defence when the plan A of lovely football isn't panning out.

Thing is, either of the strikers who faced us on Saturday would be ideal. I thought both Paynter & Brown looked like they could do the basics really well, which is essentially all we need.

Ginger Mourinho sign Saido Berahino.

If Crewe and Yeovil are sniffing around him surely we should. Would certainly sort our striker issue out.

He started well at Brentford, but I'm sure they sent him back as he had a very bad attitude.

Saying that we need someone with more experience up there.

Basically they could head, and they knew where the ball was coming. Simple but so effective against teams like us.

Didnt sign him because he was a bellend when he scored past them when he signed for Leeds.

Not sure he is what we need really.

I don't care if the striker we get is blind and has to use his guide dog to see the ball for him. 34 stone, one legged and 65. Providing he scores goals

Again, i'd argue that isn't necessarily what we want. It's someone to hold the ball up and bring the three attacking midfielders into play. For me, Jabo would be ideal

Well considering we were going to make Ledesma one of the highest paid Walsall players of all time and the fact all our signings so far wouldnt have cost much, you'd expect we could offer a fair wage to some of these named strikers.

Not to mention the money we got for Tank, Westlake and Gerrards sell on clause....all money will go back into team strengthening

Only chance of survival this season, one dodgy goalie aided by 10 full backs....it's Deanos plan 'B' obviously, and anyway what does 'striker' mean?........................

Two more to come in before the window closes according to Deano, plus a permanent deal for Chambers J hopefully.

http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/oth ... -signings/

Experienced forward must be one of the two. What about the other? Specialist left back must be favourite now that Jordan Stewart seems to have gone quiet.

Ideally Smith would have completed his signings before the start of the season, rather than send us out in competitive matches with obvious weak areas in attack and defence; but, since we only sign players have been released from their clubs on free transfers, the summer transfer window has little or no relevance to us. We can sign free agents at any time so there will be no extra reason to panic when the window closes after next weekend.

As these are loan signings, I imagine they are players Smith was prepared to wait for until they became available. Loads of clubs are still adding to their squad so you could imagine that Smith's new striker, for example, was only going to come on the market once his current club had signed a new striker of their own.

With that in mind, I wonder if there's any chance of us getting Brett Pitman? Bristol City have brought in two new forwards this week and he has not really had a look-in under Macinnes. Would be a great signing IMO.

Nobody mentioned Jake Jervis from the Blues... 6ft 3, quick, powerful (not a big lump) striker who has just gone to Carlisle I think. He had decent loan spells at both Swindon and Preston last season. Did half expect him to turn up at our place, as I'd have thought local neighbours would be a good hunting ground.

Berahino is a good shout. 10 goals in 23 in loan spells at Northampton and Brentford, capped by England at U16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 level scoring 14 in 33...

Did we get taken over by a middle eastern Tycoon at some point this afternoon? It's one of thoose sitautions where he'd been told by McInnes to go on loan and his agent would look at the list of teams offered, he'd see Walsall and not even list it to Brett - He'l not only be on 6 or 7k a week, he'd get another championship club or a side like Sheffield United at the very, very worst. We'l be loaning a player from a poor championship team, that's either been injured for a very long time or can't hit a barn door with a banjo. Dave Hibbert from Peterborough being the perfect shout. The other loan signing will probably be that left back from Bristol City. Play J Chambers at right back, a new signing at left back - Taundry and Benning for back up and hopefully Purkiss can agree to cancel his contract or be loaned back to Hereford immediately. He's pap.
