Surprised Italy didn't win the shoot out and surprised Spain didn't bottle it. Good news though as Spain are a much more interesting side to watch. Hopefully Russia go all the way, dicking the Germans in the final.

Why? Italy's record on penalties now is W2 L5 (only one win better than England's, who are the worst team in the world at pens), where as Spain's is W3 L3. When it comes to shoot-outs, Spain's reputation as bottlers is undeserved.

Aren't Holland the worst team at penalties in the world?
Italy are stupid. This is the third or fourth time I can remember them playing for penalties for 120 minutes only to go and lose the shoot-out (Brazil in 94 and France in 98(?) stand out) - and each time they'd have been favourites (or at least had an even money chance) in a proper game, whereas they must realise that they're useless at shoot-outs.
I know that they did eventually win the World Cup on penalties the other year, but they only got to the final because in the semi-final they managed to find the courage to keep attacking Germany and scored a late, late winner. That's the match that they should have remembered going into last night's.

I thought i read somewhere before Euro 08 , we were going to see an attacking italian team.
to begin a game with 4 central midfielders is very negative , as i said earlier they got what they deserved.

No. Holland's record is 1-4, England's is 1-5. And the only shoot-out we won was rather soured by a penalty shoot-out defeat in the very next round. Considering Germany's record is 5-1, one wonders whether we would have won a major tournament in the last 40 years if we were as good as them on pens.

For some reason I thought it was the other way round, but you are correct.
The reason we're so poor at penalties is because we don't take them seriously. If you go in with the attitude that "they're a lottery" and that there's no point in practicing as you "can't replicate the atmosphere of a real match" (isn't that an argument for not working on any skills at all and just doing lots of running in training?) then you're doomed to defeat even before you start.

The one we won was against Spain wasn't it?

I think it was because Donadoni was under pressure after sneaking through the groups, he played his tried and tested players. They were always going to be more negative with Pirlo being suspended and they haven't got another player that plays the role he plays. Perrotta tries to play an advanced role, but can't quite cut it against the bigger teams. As for the wings, Camoranesi can play wide but started the tournament poorly and didn't do much better last night, and Italy (like England) don't really have a natural left sided midfielder.

Re: Euro 2008
Donadoni has left his post as Italy boss. No surprise after the bore fest the other night really.

It's a good point. Was talking to a mate about this a while back. It is almost impossible to win a tournament without winning a penalty shoot out on the way. Not sure if any team has ever done so since penalty shoot outs were introduced, but I am guessing they haven't.

It's certainly very rare to win a tournament without a shoot-out win these days. I think that Brazil may have done in the 2002 World Cup, but I'm struggling to remember many more since the start of the 1990s. There's no reason why England can't win shoot-outs though - if we start to take them seriously as a fundamental part of the tournament rather than just the equivalent of a coin toss with no need to prepare.

Re: Euro 2008
Finalists of major tournaments (penalty shoot-out wins in brackets)
90 Germany (1) v Argentina (2)
92 Denmark (1) v Germany (1)
94 Brazil (1) v Italy (0)
96 Germany (1) v Czech Rep (1)
98 France (1) v Brazil (1)
00 France (0) v Italy (1)
02 Brazil (0) v Germany (0)
04 Greece (0) v Portugal (1)
06 Italy (1) v France (0)
Most of the time, if you want to make a final - you have to win a shoot-out.
We'll be fine under Capello, even allowing for being in the same group as Croatia.
