Hayter signs for Yeovil

They have also signed Jamie McAllister from Bristol City, according to the Ciderspace story. I'm not sure we will be able to match the tried and tested calibre of those two for the coming season, even at my most optimistic. When you consider that Yeovil are similar to us in terms of divisional stature [though with a well known manager at the helm], this is the clearest sign yet IMO that we are already a long way short of even maintaining our curent mediocrity.

I'd be more worried by the fact that Orient have snapped up Baudry and Symes from Bournemouth. Two excellent signings IMO - and it can't be due to finance because we have reliable information that Orient's budget is exactly the same as ours! There's still plenty of players out there, but I would have liked both of those, Cadamarteri (Carlisle), Burgess (Tranmere), Platt (Northampton) or Forbes (Chesterfield). Not out of our range, I wouldn't have thought. Oh well, maybe we'll get Hemmings or Vincent or Noble or Clarke (I'm not hopeful).

It's never really to do with the budget, it's who's in control of it, Slade and Johnson are far better managers than Smith with far more connections in the game.

That is indeed the worry, although most comments on here seem to point the finger more at the size of budget than the way it's spent. Still time for Smith to put it right, let's hope he does.

Never bought that to some extent cause we've always had a rather poor budget, apart from when we occasionally drop down to the basement where it's probably fair sized for that level.

Club like us needs a manager who knows his stuff, oldish and has a wide range of connections to use to grab some bargains, easier said then done though obviously.

Hearing strong reports we offered Hayter a trial but as soon as Yeovil offered 2 year deal he was off.

Also been told Darren Carter doesn't see Walsall as his 'type of club' pretty selfish considering we let him train with us for half the season.

Good. On the occasions I've seen him play for Preston he has been dreadful.

Notice that Harewood's contract at Forest has expired - surely he's earned enough to want to get some game-time at another Midlands club (to add to his list!)

He could be the new Ricketts!

At least if we do play hoof-ball, he might make it stick (though wages are likely to be a problem if he wants more than 50p a week).

Apparently Symes turned you guys down because he was only offered a one year deal .. here's a posting from our message board from a guy who usually has pretty reliable sources ... so at least you are in the market ...

Fabulous, its heartening to see Walsall are making strong moves in recruitment and taking their league one status seriously.

"reasonably close.... I would hope.... fair chance..."

I'll believe it when he signs on the dotted line. It won't be for us, but I wouldn't be shocked if he signs for someone in Argentina.

On the other hand, he has a few years to make a packet for the benefit of his family. Mobility is part and parcel of being a footballer nowadays.

Both decent signings for Orient, especially Baudry if he stays fit.

I see another case of the club being ambitous managed to miracolously cost us another couple of potential contracts this week. We tried to hijack the Symes deal at the last minute with a poxy 1 year deal - when Orient (effectively the london version of us) decided to offer him a 2 year deal upfront. Its blatantly obvious that players like James Hayter are going to get offered upfront contracts from 5 or 6 clubs at this level, whether they are 1 or 2 year deals - he could have been the last couple of years Jon Macken. Im willing to bet he knocks 10-15 in for Yeovil providing he stays fit and they use a style of play he can fit into. A Symes/Hayter striking partnership, with Grigg and Bowerman from the bench wouldnt have been to abysmal at all for the position we're currently in anyway.

I'll say it now. If we stay up this season, after the way the off seasons going itl be the biggest achievement of any season since we were promoted in 2007.

I'd take signing jimmy crankey as full back at the moment. I must be honest and say i'm very disheartened by the lack of signings and ambition but i know its the same every season. At what stage last close season did we make our first signing?

Sadler on June 27 was the first signing.

Really hope this is not true, because it is then there are several completely deluded individuals trying to sign players for us. We don not have a hope in hell of offering the like sof Hayter a trial...if this is the case then I dread to think what our team will look like come August.

I'd have Taundry back tomorrow: will we get anyone better to fill the right-back spot? I doubt it. I've got a feeling most of those supporters who are glad we have released Taundry will be wishing he were back when they see the dross that we will inevitably sign (or won't sign the way things are going - have we got a transfer embargo I didn't know about?) to replace him and the others such as Lancashire, Beevers and Westlake we have allowed to leave.

Bloody hell, Walsall fans moaning about the departure of Taundry, god we have hit an all time low.

Whoever we sign, they physically cannot be any worse then him, same as Beevers. Tons of adequate wing backs about, just up to Smith to wake up and sign 'em.
