I would of thought it we are negotiating, the deal would be gettin close to been completed, as it was reported that he was training with us on friday.

But it's not a trial because we're not in a position to turn him down, we're rather desperate.

Why are we not in a position to turn him down? Last time I looked it was only the 5th July and I've no doubt there are hundreds of available players who are still decent and just choosing to leave their options open.

If it was August 5th, then I'd say we were desperate.

I believe the "true" training started today. I think last week - or at least Thursday and Friday - was the weighing in session and various tests. You know the sort Ropes used to enjoy and love.

The running and real stuff started today.

And no doubt that free players know this and are doing something with various clubs or on their own. Footballers aren't as thick to turn up to a trial looking like Rab C Nesbitt.

A rumour that is gathering pace is that we have offered terms to Gavin Mahon, who has been released by QPR. Tough tackling midfielder, although 33, he could be the 'leader' we are looking for, plus he is a local chap. We will wait a see.

Gavin Mahon would certainly fit the bill and could easily seeing us offering the chance to come here as club captain ala Stephen Hughes (although I hope hes better) Certainly experience we need although I think we need a creative midfielder rather than a defensive one with Richards and Taundry here.

sorry if this has already been on, but this is a full list of all free agents provided by the PFA. Thought it might interest a few to have a look.

Where do we rank on the list of the 60 or so clubs considering these decent players though?

Hmmm, now that would be a solid signing for us, go on Hutch, get him on loan.

I'd get Jules back asap, well underated when he was at Walsall.

Forest still rate him else they would have let him go in the summer.

Just been told and this backs it up, we've got Oliver Lancashire on trial. Centre half from who was released from Southampton.

Westlake
Lancashire/Smith
Macdonald
Lescott

That defence is worse than last season and lacks experience.

How is it, Hughes was pants, Vincent was steady but lets be honnest he wasnt great and was too slow, Westlake was better over the season than Weston, its debateable to say whos better out of Lescott & Vincent (if he signs), so I dont think were worse at all, about the same more like.... we definatly need more back up though.
