Southend United (H) League One, 28th Oct 3pm
We welcome Phil Brown's Shrimpers to fortress Bescot in the hope that we can (a) build on our current 4-match unbeaten run, (b) maintain our unbeaten at home status this season in League One, and (c) see if we can achieve back-to-back clean sheets. There's a hat-trick worth going for!!
Mr. Brown has had a chequered career in football management, starting at Bolton Wanderers (caretaker capacity) before moving on to Derby County, Hull City, Preston North End and, since 2013, Southend United. His "short fuse" has seen him banished from the touchline a few times, and on three occasions he has been heavily fined and warned as to his future conduct by the F.A. ... he is also remembered for his tactics on Boxing Day 2008 when, as manager of a poorly performing Hull City side at Manchester City, he kept the players on the pitch during the half-time break and conducted his team talk in full view of the fans at the Hull City (away) end.
There should be at least one familiar face in Southend United's line-up of course, that of Jason Demetriou - his attacking wing-back play has brought him 2 League One goals this season in 9 appearances. As far as current League One form is concerned Southend are one place and one point above us, but their goal difference of -7 (19 scored, 26 conceded) would seem to indicate that we might have a chance of scoring - it's worth noting that they lost 4-1 at Doncaster Rovers having taken the lead, whereas we ...well, you know the rest!! Another familiar name in Southend's squad is Nile Ranger, whose "bad boy" history has led to quite a few disruptions in his career since his early promise of 11 appearances for the England U-19 team, scoring 6 goals in the process. Southend United's current league One form:
26 Sep AFC Wimbledon (H) Won 1-0
30 Sep Blackpool (H) Won 2-1
7 Oct Doncaster Rovers (A) Lost 4-1
14 Oct Wigan Athletic (A) Lost 3-0
17 Oct Peterborough United (H) Drew 1-1
21 Oct Bury (H) Won 1-0
The "Shrimpers Chit-Chat" forum has a similar view to ourselves regarding away fixtures - they would be quite happy with a point, and it has been mentioned there that they will need to closely shackle Oztumer in order to achieve that objective. Having said that, they might not need to worry, as Jon Whitney's selection and tactics are certainly not set in stone - Oztumer only got on the pitch for the last 5 minutes against MK Dons
Assuming all niggling injuries have cleared up (where is Devlin, by the way?) a full-strength Saddlers' team should send the Shrimpers back to the seaside with nothing in their bucket and spade, except, perhaps, for a goodwill Balti pie. I'll go for a 2-0 home win (Roberts and Agyei, with Bakayoko providing assists for both goals) - I know we won 0-3 at the Keepmoat, but you can't expect every opposition defence to be as generous as they were........

Yes, another 1-1, followed by an unusually polite discussion on here of our managerial, tactical and defensive frailties.

Southend have a good team on paper but clearly have an issue playing away from home having only gained 4 points out of 21
Walsall 2-0 Southend
Walsall 2-0 Southend

1-1 without a doubt, or perhaps 1-2, or even 0-0?.................. Betfair loves a ditherer! :D :D
One certain prediction though....Baky will be in the line up! After all, this lad will make a great footballer one day. And, he has the same name as a guy that plays for Chelskie for clip sake!

Anyone whos been watching us 15 years plus should remember Southend at home is a team we’ve really struggled too beat sometimes. Lost a few times with some real dodgy performances, a 0-3 home
defeat with a couple from Leon Clarke and one from Freddy Eastwood (remember him) springs too mind.
Personally for me the jurys still out on Whitney, have we ever started the same 11 for 2 games running this year? We’ve played 442 4141 4231 352 343 3412 3511, the team is never settled no wonder we struggle.
That being said

Saddlers 3 - Shrimpers 2.
Whitney Out chants to start 3 minutes into the first half after our first mis-placed pass.
Southend to go 2-0 up by half time.
Amazing come back in 2nd half as we grab 3 goals yet Whitney Out chants increase from 82 to 97 decibels with the team booed off the pitch after a thrilling victory.
Jason Demetriou being the only player to applaud the home fans.
Roger Boli to make guest appearance at half time and re-create his famous overhead kick and Suntan Man to give us a rendition of "Sloop John B" as he grabs the mike off the pitchside announcer.
Att: 4,107 with 523 from Sarfend.

Here we go.....................The stats show that they are all over us from the start, now that's unusual...........
You get the feeling that the chants will start VERY early today, we cannot afford to lose this one, but to get goals you have to leave your own half, so far we seem incapable of doing so.
Sarfend 63% possession! Surely WE are the home side?
Mind you, we could be Oldham 65% possession, no shots, Scunny 10 shots and 2 goals!!

31 minutes, and we have a corner!!!!!!!!
In the first half hour we've had ONE shot (off target), and that was from Joe Edwards........
Plymouth Argyle 1 Rochdale 1 now ..... (35 min)

Roberts had two shots at goal in last five minutes. Stats will probably come up on AM's feed as shots on target for Sarfend.
