A Tuesday evening fixture against the Addicks ... how many memory cells are stirred in the minds of (let's be kind) "mature" Saddlers' supporters at the sound of that phrase? I won't go into the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth that occurred on a Tuesday night back in 1963 - suffice it to say that the upshot of that abandoned game was a hastily arranged replay on the Friday night. A Saddlers' win or even a draw would have been enough to keep us up in what is now called The Championship, and also relegate Charlton Athletic. In those pre-substitute days we suffered two significant injuries during the game, the more serious of which was seeing goalkeeper Alan Boswell stretchered off with a fractured jaw/cheekbone. I think it was fullback Granville Palin who took over the green jersey, and we were 0-2 down soon afterwards. We then had the temerity to score in the second half but all to no avail, and this particular teenager had his first experience of seeing grown men in tears. The F. A. Cup final played the next day held no interest for me whatever!!
OK - enough of this wallowing in past misery - what of Charlton's current fortunes? Well, they're still owned by a Belgian despite the well-organised protests that have been set up by CARD (Coalition Against Roland DuChatelet) - lobbing plastic pink pigs on to the playing area has attracted much media coverage. Their team manager is, of course, Karl Robinson (late of Franchise Dons) and perhaps those Walsall supporters in the WhitneyOUT camp should note that in the past couple of years Charlton have employed and got rid of no less than 8 managers. Robinson was appointed last November, which puts him in the long-serving member category. Results so far this season can fairly be described as "mixed" - earlier this month they were 2nd in the table, just a point behind the Sloppies, but a return of only one point from the last 3 games has seen them slip down to 7th place. League One form:
26 Aug Rotherham United (A) Won 0-2
2 Sep Oldham Athletic (A) Won 3-4
9 Sep Southend United (H) Won 2-1
12 Sep Wigan Athletic (H) Lost 0-3
16 Sep Gillingham (A) Lost 1-0
23 Sep Bury (H) Drew 1-1
JW is slowly but surely seeing off some of the gremlins that have marked his tenure at the Bank's's' - the latest one, of course, being the myth that Walsall were incapable of winning away from home. Our win at Oxford should not be dismissed light-heartedly - that was their first home League One defeat, and they are still sitting quite respectably in the table, just above ourselves on goal difference. Speaking of goal difference, how much healthier ours would be if we were able to stop being so generous with penalties donated to the opposition..........
So what can we expect from this game? There is another gremlin to be kicked into touch, obviously - the one that says "Walsall can not keep a clean sheet". This game is the ideal one to see that happen, and 3 points would really put us in close touch with the coat-tails of the play-off zone. If the defence can tighten up without conceding spot kicks, and if we can carry on the experiment with old-fashioned proper wingers who supply the crosses for the likes of Tyler Roberts to convert, well, we could extend this current run of good form .... couldn't we?
My only worry is that Charlton do have a good goalscoring record this season (at times) - anyone who goes to Rotherham United and wins 0-2 can't be dismissed lightly. Having said that, they managed to lose against Gillingham, which gave the Gills their only win of the season so far!!
What the hell .... I'll go for a 2-0 home win, with Roberts (any of them) and Oztumer on target. :D

I remember the 1963 game well WELSH and little thought as an 18 yr old that it would be many years before we grace the 2nd tier again. Since then games against Charlton have always been about revenge for me. The unfairness of it all still rankles!!
Anyway as for Tuesday I am going for a narrow win ...2-1 will do.

2-1 win.
Don't think Charlton have had a great record at Bescot in their various stints in this division over the last 10 years.
Ricky Holmes is a very good player for them though. Back from suspension.

Unfortunately, I also remember that 1962-63 season with its horrible (for us) ending. The following month I sat my A-Level exams, so the summer of 1963 does not evoke happy memories for me.

Ditto .........................except the exams bit . I was still doing my paper round down Leigh Road.
Them two matches were heartbreaking , because my first two seasons watching Walsall we got promoted both times , so watching DH was glory all the way .
The only blot on the landscape had been when some tinpot non league upstarts from Peterborough had the temerity to knock us out the cup....................I was outraged , how very dare they !!!

But we were good at that ...... Remember that when we got promoted from Division 3 to Division 2 a couple of years before, we went the whole season undefeated in the League - Played 23, Won 19, Drew 4, goal tally 62-20. Yet we managed to lose to non-league Yeovil Town at home in the F.A. Cup........

2-1 win. With the ghosts of 63 forming an impervious wall of hate after their only inevitable goal.

2-1 to us.
Change a winning team to the 3-5-2 that has served us fairly well at home or stick to the same team that got our first away win? I would stick, if we get the result go again at Wigan then it gives us the chance to change shape for Shrewsbury if it goes t*ts up there.
Nice to have some sort of option - another win and some momentum leading up to the Sloppies at home.

Stick with 4-4-1-1 I say. Got a sneaky feeling about this one. 2-0 Walsall.

1 - 1 I reckon. Charlton are very inconsistent but I think they will have more good days than bad and end up top half/play offs. We have the fire power to beat anyone but at the moment I can't see us keeping a clean sheet for love nor money so I'd take a draw.
That said I think we are in for a pounding on Saturday so a win wouldn't go a miss.

Is future England protege manager plucky Karl Robinson in charge of this lot still?

He is though the natives are definitely starting to get upset with him. Love this from their forum:
Another draw at Walsall, another couple of places we slip down the table, another chapter of excuses from Rent-a-Gob.

Re: Charlton Athletic (H) Tue Sept 26th, 7.45pm
63 still rankles with us oldies, I was 15, and yes I too cried, more from frustration of the circumstance.
I seem to remember a similar game at the Bescot against Roverscum if I remember, but we were waiting for another result which went against us.
Tomorrow night I will be in the Tile choice, have business in Wolves in the afternoon, will be my first visit to that awful town centre for about 30 odd years, though I drive past the custard bowl quite regularly.
I owe many a pint to good friends and acquaintances that I have been lucky enough to get to know via UTS these past few years. Hope I do eventually get to meet a few that I don't know by sight. Don't think Saddla will be queuing though!
Have high hopes of a result, I was going for 2-1, but I seem to be a little late with this forecast! :? :?
Will also of course be at Wigan on Saturday, for me it's like a drive from Willenhall to Walsall. The Central near the station is a very good meeting point. Just a short jog to the ground from there.

probably one of the few managers/players i have detested over the years, along with Joey barton/ Alex ferguson and mark hughes, i hope, no i know we will beat them, because like forest, we are one of his boggy teams, i predict a 4-1 to us with us singing "your getting sacked in the morning" song  my only worry is that smith could outsmart him, not sure about JW :|derbysaddler wrote:Is future England protege manager plucky Karl Robinson in charge of this lot still?

Does he now state that Charlton are operating with one of the lowest playing budgets in the division?
What a trooper he is, doing such sterling work with a number of clubs financed by such peanuts

According to the much-maligned match stats, possession 69/31% in favour of Charlton. They've had 7 shots, 4 on target. 0 on target for us.

Not there tonight but again the match stats on the BBC indicate we've hardly had a kick so far with 65% possession to Latics!!! Now a booking!!
The stats for the Oxford game were skewed from what I've read on here so I hope they've got it wrong again tonight!!
