From chart hits to terrace anthems

Sat Aug 19, 2017 11:10 am

Just heard "Painter Man" by Boney M on the wireless and was surprised how familiar the tune was. Realised the song was much used on the terraces in the late 70s and made me curious as to what other songs UTS folk can pinpoint from the charts. Tom Hark by The Piranhas was very popular too from 1980 and still used today.

Much used in recent times are Sloop John B (Beach Boys) and Just can't get enough (Depeche Mode).

Anyone care to add to the charts list of terrace anthems?

No prizes for Dean Holden and Brimful of Asha

The only obvious one that springs to mind is "When you walk through a storm" - originally from the Hollywood musical "Carousel", it was transformed into a mega-hit by Gerry & The Pacemakers as "You'll never walk alone" and adopted by Liverpool FC.

Sacked in the morning ............or ..........sing when you're winning , is from "Guantanamera"
a hit for the Sandpipers.

Then there's " Go West" by Village People , spawned stand up if you hate the Wolves/Villa etc.

Then there is "Daydream believer" by the Monkeys , and many others.

Fifteen/Sixteen year old me never quite understood (at the time or now) the significance of the chorus of a novelty rap song following a Walsall goal, and I hadn't thought of the above in at least fifteen years.... but, bloody hell, that's made my morning! Memories of Killer and John Hodge ripping Luton apart at Bescot!

I remember we clawed our way back from 1-0 down against Scunthorpe at home, to win 2-1. This chorus was rolled out at full volume from the standing Gilbert Alsop - I don't think I could speak properly for days! :D

Having just listened to both I much prefer the older version.

Our neighbours in Bordesley adopted Sir Harry Lauder's "Keep right on to the end of the road" many years ago - not sure whether it's still sung.

And (changing codes) we mustn't forget "Swing low, sweet chariot", still belted out fortissimo at Twickenham.

It most certainly is..................and I regard it as one the best most inspiring / encouraging songs amongst the 92.

"Goodnight, Irene" at Bristol Rovers

There was a spell a number of years back when it seemed that You've Lost That Loving Feeling was going to take hold as a Walsall song but like most things Walsall related it fizzled out.

I love it on the rare occasions One Step Beyond gets an airing. Just don't let the Chelsea lot claim it as their own.

YLTLF was a classic. Ruined by Top Gun, sadly.
