Scunthorpe United (A) Feb 14th 7.45pm
Our 5-game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end at Bolton and we now have a Valentine's Day fixture at Glanford Park against Scunthorpe United, who suffered a similar fate on Saturday, losing their 26-game unbeaten home run to (of all teams) Shrewsbury Town. Despite that they are sitting comfortably in the second automatic promotion place in League One, 5 points behind Sheffield United but with a game in hand. For this game Scunthorpe seem to have a fully fit squad available - Neil Bishop's red card against Southend was rescinded after an appeal, and Josh Morris (who got 3 of their goals against us back in September) is still a regular. Sam Mantom, however, hasn't figured in the most recent games against Southend and Shrewsbury - possibly a training injury.
Scunthorpe United's latest League One form:
2 Jan Peterborough United (H) Drew 1-1
7 Jan Bury (H) Won 3-2
14 Jan Northampton Town (A) Won 1-2
28 Jan Port Vale (H) Won 3-2
4 Feb Southend United (A) Lost 3-1
11 Feb Shrewsbury Town (H) Lost 0-1
After the Bolton result the argument about not changing a winning team goes out of the window ... it's apparent that Bakayoko may benefit by being rested, and perhaps Jackson should be given an opportunity to show his worth as an out-and-out striker, with Kieron Morris in close support. It's also to be hoped that our defence uses the couple of days available to work on the vexed question of keeping out the opposition's crosses - Etheridge, for all his prowess at shot-stopping, is vulnerable to anything pitched high (even in his own 6-yard box, which should automatically be HIS territory). Following the old adage of "Prevention is better than Cure", if the crosses can be strangled at birth (so to speak) then pressure is relieved on the goalkeeper. Part of the problem is possibly related to something I've commented on before - if our full-backs are marauding upfield in support of our strikers then it will necessarily leave gaps which can be exploited by opposing attacks. Alternatively, is it time to see if young MacGillivray deals with crosses more efficiently? I'll leave that thought with you.........
As for predictions, logically if the Sloppies can go to Scunthorpe and come away with 3 points there is no reason on earth why we can't - however this is Walsall we're talking about, and bearing in mind the Iron's determination (and Keith Alexander's motivation) to bounce back from 2 successive defeats I would be happy with just a point from this one, say 1-1 with our Turkish Messi again on target.

More optimistic about this one than for Bolton, mind we're again playing a team with a much bigger wage bill and more experienced manager. Add to that it's a good distance away from home on a Tuesday night and Scunthorpe must decidedly be favourites. Can Osbourne and Flo play again so soon? Osbourne had his only shocker against these at home.
Anything from Scunny would be a bonus, and this Saturday against Posh is much more important to us having a decent week.
They are a little rattled at the mo, but can't have become a poor team after just two bad results. Their manager claims as much, as well as confirms Mantom is with the medical team. Does that mean he's become a physio?

He spends so much time on the treatment bench I'm sure he has the knowledge to be a physio by now!

I fancy us for this one and hopefully Jackson will take advantage of his starting opportunity so I'll go for a 1-2 with a Jacko/ozzy double

Re: Scunthorpe United (A) Feb 14th 7.45pm
Have some on here been to one of 'Optimistics' grand lectures on how to be positive? Even when your glass is actually half empty, pretend it's half full, and keep believing that our downright average mid table, poorly managed team, can go away to automatic promotion hopeful's Scunthorpe, on a miserable freezing Tuesday evening in February, and come away with owt but a mirror image drubbing similar to Saturday?
I think it is believed that as they were beaten by a rapidly improving Sloppies side (boosted by clever loan/free transfers) on Saturday, that we can do likewise, I somehow doubt that they will lose two on the trot at home!
Still we live in hope, watch our lot prove that 'doing a Walsall' is almost as inevitable as last seasons Barnsley miracle.
I will hold out for a 1-1 draw, but my head tells me that I'm dreaming, or it's the demon drink clouding my judgement.
Come on me babbies....................

Elsewhere, a very early goal at freezing Boundary Park - Oldham Athletic 1 Charlton Athletic 0 (3 min)
7 minutes, and Jackson's shot on target is saved........
15 minutes gone, and no goals anywhere apart from the Oldham one
First yellow card of the game goes to Scunthorpe, 17 minutes (Ness, for a foul on Cuvelier)
Yellow card for Walsall, 26 minutes (Adam Chambers)

And the real effect of Oldham's goal is to push Coventry City even deeper into the mire.....

From the stats. looks like a comfortable half...indeed have had more of the play and more shots. We will probably lose 1-0....worse news is Flo's injury....poor lad .

From the stats we seem to be the 'home' side, bit disappointing that we have had 6 corners, and 9 shots but still not registered a goal, same old, same old problem. But good to see us so much in command, after all this lot are 'on' for automatic promotion as things stand.
