Luton Town (A) Saturday 30th July (friendly)
Our final pre-season game takes place at Kenilworth Road, the home of Luton Town since 1905. Those of us with long memories can recall The Hatters playing in the old Division I as well as the F. A. Cup Final, but the ups and downs of football life sees them currently in League 2. Eric Morecambe was perhaps their most well-known supporter, and he would certainly been pleased with a couple of their pre-season friendlies - the four games played so far have seen these results:
16 July Bedford Town (A) Won 0-9
19 July Boreham Wood (A) Lost 1-0
23 July Brighton & Hove Albion (H) Won 2-1
26 July Woking (A) Drew 1-1
There are at least two familiar names in Luton Town's playing staff - Craig Mackail-Smith was something of a prolific goalscorer for Peterborough United, and more recognisable will be Jordan Cook who turned down our contract offer in the close season, jumping at the chance to be re-united with Luton boss Nathan Jones (they had previously been colleagues at Charlton Athletic).
As this is Jon Whitney's last chance to experiment before the season starts in earnest I would expect his team selection to be fairly near "first choice". Whether Franck Moussa is totally match fit is possibly open to question, and we now have young Josh Ginelly on a six month loan going for a wing place. Amadou Bakayoko's pre-season form may well have been convincing enough to merit a start alongside Simeon Jackson - watch this space.....
Hopefully our defence will have learned a thing or two after conceding three goals to Luton's fellow League 2 side Notts County, and in what should be a competitive match we should be aiming for a 1-2 or 1-3 win......maybe..... :D

I'll take a clean sheet and plenty of chances created even if it finishes 0-0.

Same. Let's have a good run out with no injuries.

How the mighty have fallen: I remember seeing Luton kick Wolves' butt in the 1950s or 1960s (memory fade) - the name Reg Cutler springs to mind (but he might have played for Bournemouth) ?????
:?
Yeah. Just checked. He played for Bournemouth when they broke a goal post at Molineux.
Can't think of the name of the kid who played for Luton and roasted the Wolves defence when they won at the Mixer - again 50s or 60s. Anyone remember?

Reg Cutler....d.o.b. 17/2/35, Birmingham. Clubs were W.B.A. (Juniors), Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Stockport County. His Bournemouth career was from June 1956 to September 1958, making 96 appearances and scoring 21 goals. His nominal position was Outside-left.
(He wouldn't have made our first team though.....we had Colin Taylor  )

kenilworth road has got to be the worst ground i have ever had the misfortune to visit :(
looks like we will see the team that whit's will put out against wimbledon. he said they will be treating the game as a league game. i know that we don't usually take to much interest in friendly results. but maybe we should with this one if we are to try and gauge how we think we will do over the coming months

I'm gewin. If only to see who's who. I hope they put names on the shirts this time. Against derby it was difficult with just numbers.

I'd hazard a guess at GordonTurner.
He got a boat load of goals for 'em.

Re: Luton Town (A) Saturday 30th July (friendly)
Well that was right load of garbage.
I remembered today as I sat there dropping off why I don't go to friendlies.
Wish I hadn't gone to this one either.
To be fair Jackson took his goal well when their defender failed totally to clear it. Their Goalie was definitely not impressed.
We didn't create anything first half it was a total bore.
2nd half was slightly better as we started to use Rico a bit more. Ozturmer had his worst game that I have seen him play (out of 2 the other being Derby) Edwards looked composed. McCarthy looked quite ordinary and O'Connor didn't shine. Etheridge showed he can still put the ball into touch when he's clearing upfield to our forward. Flo was anonymous. Adam Chambers still has it. (I don't know how at his age!) Morris has cemented his starting place with a reasonable display. Osbourne looked a useful addition when he came on. the new winger from Burnley didn't impress me much and didn't seem to enjoy taking players on and running at them with pace which is what I was expecting. At least they had their names on the back of their shirts this week, but we look too much like Peterborough for my liking. Baka looked sharp when he came on.
plus points: it didn't rain. There wasn't a queue for the drinks at half time.

Re: Luton Town (A) Saturday 30th July (friendly)
Dire game, less said about it the better.
McCarthy and Adam Chambers played very well, Edwards and Morris were also very useful. The rest were bang average with the exception of Etheridge who didn't have much to save but consistently kicked awfully all match.
I've seen all of pre-season now and on what I have seen I reckon we will finish between 10th and 16th, we lack a little bit of the "it" factor going forwards.

Woooah there saddla! Just tone down that excitement. Don't want black & red cheque flag waving, hoards trying desperately to get to the Wimbledon opener on Saturday, causing traffic chaos in and around Walsall now do we?
Presume Luwan tarn fans won't be giving any rave reviews about our stupendous performance then?

That would upset Saigon who doesn't believe in flag waving.
I'd bet he'd wave one if he was drowning however. Which, metaphorically, he is.

Chris Nicholl loved 1-0s so he would be pleased...and I think 1-0 away from home is ok. Lets hope we can turn it on next week!

Playing on paper is easy compared to playing on grass.
