Solihull Moors (A) Saturday 16th July (friendly)
For our first "open doors" pre-season friendly we travel to the other side of Brum to play Solihull Moors. The Moors are a comparatively recent creation, founded in 2007 following a merger between Moor Green and Solihull Borough. Last season was successful and saw them promoted from the National League (North) to the National League, under the care of manager and ex-QPR captain Marcus Bignot. There is one member of their playing/coaching staff whose name will be very familiar to Saddlers' fans and that is Darren Byfield, signed from Tamworth in 2013. Darren is classified as a midfielder, but also coaches the Moors' under-18 team. Thank you again, Darren, for your contribution at the Millennium Stadium :D . I wouldn't think we will see him on the pitch - he will be celebrating his 40th birthday in a couple of months........
What will the Walsall team look like (apart from complete strangers to each other, that is)? With so many comings and goings, and still uncertainty over one or two players, it's very much a case of roulette for any outsider trying to pick the side. Also, because it's a pre-season friendly there will probably be a couple of blokes who answer to the name of "A. Triallist", and goodness knows how many substitutes may make an appearance (or even how many substitutes are allowed).
The Moors' pre-season games have already started, and they drew 1-1 at home to Oxford United yesterday (9th July). On Tuesday night they will be entertaining Birmingham City.
Predictions for this game are meaningless - it is to be hoped, however, that Jon Whitney and his staff will have begun to get the players to "gell" into some kind of team formation rather than a bunch of individuals. Not wishing to bang the Welsh drum excessively but if the Saddlers can display the kind of fervour displayed by Wales at Euro 16 rather than the drab spectacle of the kind of dross served up by England, we could be in for a very interesting season.
OK, prediction........ ........ Solihull Moors 1 Walsall 2 (Lightbourne, Houghton).

Darren Byfield is the manager of Redditch United now and has recently signed Clinton Morrison.

So there's something else we know about Solihull Moors......they don't update their official website apart from the result of yesterday's game!

Are Roberts, Shorrock, Koyhar and Mr Double-barreled trialists or youth team players?

All four are listed on the club's official website as Youth Team players. Appearances last season:
Kory Roberts 28 (4 sub) 3 goals
William Shorrock 23 (9 sub) 5 goals
Maziar Kouhyar 28 7 goals
Callum Cockerill-Mollett 34 0 goals
I suppose you have to trust the official site, even though it still lists Bryn Morris in the 1st team squad, along with Romaine Sawyers, Sam Mantom, Jason Demetriou, Andy Taylor, Paul Downing, Anthony Forde, Milan Lalkovic and Jordan Cook !!

Roberts and Kouyhar are first year professionals...the others are youth teamers. Another 1st year professional is Sangha who is due to play the second half.

In other news....Burton 3-0 Stoke.
Good run out at least and very pleasing to see Flo play some minutes. Oztumer will be a fan favourite imo, you'll all be pleasantly surprised by him I reckon.
Hopefully get in at least one striker before the Derby game.

Final score 0-5. Oztumer (2), Bakayoko (2 pens), Cuvelier.
OK, I know it's a non-league side, but 0-5 is a pretty respectable result. Cuvelier seems to have taken the Sawyers role with defence-splitting passes, but no doubt next Tuesday's game against the Blues will shed more light on our potential.

That was a fantastic performance, especially first half. Oztumer and Cuvelier linked up gorgeously. Bakayoko looks very useful and dangerous too.

Nice afternoon out, Oztumer and Flo are ridiculously good players and certainly an up grade on a couple who have left.
Young George Dobson impressed to, very composed and always wanting the ball.

to put this result in perspective this is Solihul's 3rd pre season game. They drew 1-1 with newly promoted league 1 rivals Oxford and lost 3-1 to Brummagem.

What was the formation Jonny?
I just assumed Ozzy at number 10 and Flo CM but looks like it was Dobson alongside Chambers...

So, not a bad result overall, good that Flo appears to be playing OK.
Perhaps Bakybyro may turn out to be the hidden gem that we possessed all along?

I think that's the thing people are missing.
Yes it's worrying losing so many players but there are good players coming in to replace them, I have no worries about Oztumer at this level and IF Flo can stay fit we know he's an excellent player at this level.
Still got Moussa to come in to add some unpredictability in attack. It's not all doom and gloom.

Flo was pushed very far forward. Chambers and Dobson holding.

So a sort of 4-3-3 then with Ozzy playing a sort of Milan role of starting out wide and then cutting infield.
Could work, Moussa is obviously a wide forward so just need to find a central striker.....
How did Edwards play, does he get up and down the flank like Demetriou did?

Oztumer was in the hole with Flo left and Kouyhar on the right. Think we were somewhat forced to do this as we only have 1 out and out winger in Morris with Moussa seemingly not fit enough to play yet. The interchange between Koutyhar, Oztumer and Cuvelier was fantastic though - lovely passing moves with plenty of fluid position switching.
Leatherman wrote:What did you make of Ozbawn?
I think he's decent but he didn't really have a good game. Looked slow, leggy and his long range passing was a bit wayward. This is to be expected though as he did have pretty much a year off without football.

Re: Solihull Moors (A) Saturday 16th July (friendly)
We played some good football in the first half, even against a team from two levels below. There are just two words to describe Cuvelier and Oztumer - pure class - way above anything else on the field. Regarding Osborn/Osborne/Osbourn/Osbourne, he is still short of full match fitness but if he can get fit, he will certainly add a physical presence to the team. Edwards, McCarthy and Dobson all had steady games but, for me, the big plus was Bakayoko. After starring for the youth team, a couple of years ago, he lost his way and looked as if that early promise would not be fulfilled. I think that he realises that this may be his last chance. He has always been tall but now he has filled out and he was a constant threat, all afternoon. He stuck his two penalties away well, too.
Obviously, Blooz and Direby Scunthorpe will provide much more challenging opposition but this afternoon's performance was, at least, encouraging. Hopefully, Moussa will be playing.

I thought Edwards looked solid defensively but if you are looking for a Jason mark 2, forget it. He very rarely ventured past the half way line. I am not saying that is a bad thing, we may well be a bit more solid overall with on, y Rico bombing forward on the left.
With the obvious caveat about the quality of the opposition it was quite a pleasing afternoon especially the first 45 minutes. It was great to see Flo again -although when he burst past the last defender to score his goal I was praying his hamstring remained intact.

Interesting. Rico must be kept at all costs then as having two steady eddie FBs won't work with this team.

....and according to the stadium announcer (almost half a dozen times) we had "Tom Bradshaw on the bench". Some home fans were looking forward to seeing him but he didn't feature. They've got a friendly coming up soon v Shrewsbury though so perhaps he'll get a game then. :roll:Welsh_Saddler wrote:We have two separate line-ups for the Saddlers at Solihull today, one for each half..... so, the 1st half will be:
