Well it's here! The day of destiny.

Predictions?

I reckon a draw or a sneaky 2-1 win for the mighty Lions!

We will make Agincourt look like tea in the park.

We will smash them.

We will win 3-0.

We will qualify for the next stage.

Those "positivity" classes are worth every penny!

There's "positivity" and then there's "delusional"

Listening to the fall out from the Ireland game on 5Live this morning was amusing. Everyone was at a loss to understand why they defended so badly, have these people never watched Match of the Day?

On the basis of the last game I saw him in, Oxlade-Chamberlain has to learn the fine art of when to run with the ball and when to pass it. Hope he's learned that before tonight.

Rest looks OK. It may be a game to bring Carroll on later on to SMASH the French defence with his commanding stature and distracting ponytail. He IS the English longbow. Huzzah!

Agincourt?

Fully expecting a Castillon.

3-1 France against a very ordinary band of player. :(

From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Roy's day.

England vs France - 11/06/2012

Massive game tonight.

Bootham v Holgate in a top-of-the-table clash in Division A of the York Summer Table Tennis League.

Completely focussed on that I'm afraid, but will probably have Ingerlund on in the background as I do my stretches and visualisation routine. Is David Beckham playing? I liked him.

Never knew he played table tennis.

British squares against French cavalry.

Not bad. Might even make it through to the next round with that organisation.

Very good performance by England, Welbeck excellent. Well organised defence against the cheating French and a bias referee who allowed the French to go unpunished for a succession of sly professional fouls. Awful council house tv coverage by ITV, truly terrible pundits, I dread the next game to be screened by those jokers, couldn't even tell us how much extra time was to be played until the 92 minute

Told you all we'd SMASH them.

We'd have won with Carroll on instead of Defoe for the last 15. Ah well.

Yeah, the reviewing afterwards was wack. Why have they hired Jamie Carragher for the role? He didn't say anything of any worth and hadn't got a clue what he was saying about the french team. BBC has much better coverage. Annoys me how ITV go for a break right before kick off. :x

Score first then concede soon after before desperately hanging on for a point.

Baffling substitutions and questionable tactics. We'll get nowhere drawing games.

Smith out.

Table not adequately prepared. Bat grip too tightly wound. Umpire not assertive enough.

Desmond Douglas out.

On the plus side very well organised at the back , but gave the ball away too much particularly in the second half , all in all decent enough .

The referee was truly dreadful

Notes from watching the game:

1 - the ref, whilst terrible, wasn't altogether awful, as various replays regarding incidents involving England players revealed.
2 - all games are not away games, and England players need to learn that
3 - staying upright is more important than falling in a heap with modern refs
4 - if you are going to foul, it;s better to try it off the ball
5 - pass faster
6 - trust your team mates (see 5 above)
7 - England play like a team in need of a certain supplement beginning with V. The build-up is measured, paced and considerate, but all too often the end product is too quick

And Bootham v Holgate? What's your verdict on that one?

I thought I was watching Walsall, too!

Organised defence, lacking in midfield, and ineffective up front.

Bootham Conservative Club 3-7 Holgate Working Men's Club

Maggie Thatcher, Lord Beaverbrook, Winston Churchill, Jeffrey Archer, Cully, Norman StJohn Stevas... Your boys took a heeeeeeell of a beating.

Yes, a victory for the working man. Bankrupt Goldman Sachs - buy Bangsection's forehand.

To be fair, it's a cracking pint of Cameron's Strongarm (insert ConDem gag here) in Bootham CC. Much better than the John Smiths at my club. Probably enough to tempt me over if they wanted to make me a close season offer... The insidious free market triumphs again!

It does stagger me that a midfielder, an international midfielder at that, can't kick the ball with this left foot.

We did OK with our limited gene pool. It did strike me though that it's a damn good job that we had immigration from the West Indies in the 60's. Can you imaging how bad we would be with just our white players.

You're right they will not be easy games, but England must now win against Sweden as they are playing the afternoon match.
They then have to hope that France will beat Ukraine. If England fail to win they can play out a cosy 1-1 with a final table looking a bit like this at the end of the group phase:

France 7
Ukraine 5
England 3
Sweden 1

England have proved that even with their limited ability, they can play an effective game. Swedish football is much more to England's liking and England have to show positive intent to try and get second spot. The last thing anyone wants is a decider against Ukraine team with 10 men, 70,000 fans and three officials behind the ball avoiding defeat to go through.

On the evidence of yesterday - France ain't "all that" either. I don't think they looked like definite group winners... although they probably will.
