England vs Spain

Suprised? not to find a thread against the current World and European champions Spain but I suppose that on a FA cup day involving Walsall it should take the back seat. I had intended to travel to Exeter but plans changed when I got the chance of a ticket.

Pretty pessimistic before the game, particularily when both teams line ups arrived at the table. But this is England, who like Walsall, on the very rare occasion, somehow produced a shock result. Scott parker had a tremendous game in midfield, always wanting and chasing the ball and deservably winning man of the match. Despite their possession, Spain couldn't turn it into goals and were limited to just a couple of chances while England scored off their one real chance :D

That's your lot, I'm no Preistly

Lampard scored?

Sheff is no doubt still cleaning his underpants. Otherwise we'd have heard all about it.

How dare you question how I choose to commemorate the England football team. It's none of your business, but as it happens I had 90 minutes' silence during the game and lit a candle next to a picture of Ray Wilkins at full time.

:D

You may be interested to know that the pitch was mown about an hour and a half after the end of the match by four Mountfield self propelled lawn mowers [petrol]. I didn't win a signed England shirt and Trevor Francis still has an adenoid problem.

I laughed so hard... etc.

Great stuff, BS.

Who would we nickname "Butch" from the current England set-up? Apart from Hope Powell, obviously. :(

I wasn't going to watch the game, but found myself with nothing better to do and in need of a sit down with a beer.

Our gazillionaire prima donnas defended quite well, but when they won possession of the ball, oh my, they were barely able to pass it to a player in the same shirt. The adjective that popped into my head when watching them trying to huff and puff their way forward was dross, utter dross.

How they won, god only knows, I certainly don't.

They could have put 4 past us if they had wanted.

79% posession, they wanted to walk it in the net rather than score.

Still Well played England, however how Glenn Johnsen gets a game over Kyle Walker defeats me!

79%! Really?! Good grief.

Defensively we were fine, but considering that these are the stars of the "Best League in the World™" they were absolutely clueless in possession.

I would have said that Jones was the only one who had any concept of possession.

Saying that I didn't watch it all.

And amazingly, Spain who most English people drool over could only manage 1 save out of Hart, pathetic, have the ball all you want if you only manage 1 shot.

I quite like having the ball 21% of the time and still winning.

Spain are boring. Battered by Argentina, battered by Portugal, smashed by Italy and obliterated by England. Worst of all they only just managed to beat the jocks.

Now, can every man in this country PLEASE stop swooning over these long haired gypsy prima donna's?

When you say gypsy prima donna's, don't you mean World and European champions? Yes these Spaniard clearly know nothing about winning and can only play keep ball in their own half.

Why bother looking at the % of possession that a team as?
Its a waste of time.

Its what you do with it when you have the ball that matters.
If a team as 79% possession and score nil goals, and a team as 21% and scores 1 goal, whose the better team?
Yes, the one that as won 1-0.
FACT!

You sound like a 1967 vintage Jock.

Performance is what counts in friendlies, not the score. In competitive games it's vice versa.

I reckon Sheff reads the Daily Star;

England THRASH Spain 1-0.

we are now undefeated champions of the World.

FACT!

In all seriousness, some people need to look and think, had they wanted they could have put 6 past us!

Let's all try and be happy with a performance that shows the gulf in class all to clearly just because we just happened to bundle one in the net and they didn't.

If we are happy with those kind of statistics then we are doomed to failure because for very 10 games with those possession statistics the team with 79% will win at least 7 or 8 of them.

Depends what you want to get out of the friendly, really.

If Spain were happy with their performance they wouldn't be crying in their cervezas and moaning in the press about England's tactics. If England wanted to practice the 'ten behind the ball' routine, I'd say it was a rip-roaring success. Can't see it winning us a trophy any time soon though, but it might see us safely through pool play.

You seriously think Capello's team talk was "Get ten men behind the ball at all times and if you win possession, give it straight back to Spain, and for f***s sake don't string more than one or two passes together whatever you do!"

Spain won't be happy because they lost a game they should have won, but as Tinned said 8 times out of 10 they'd have beaten us.

Well i thought it was a decent perfomance, and hard fought.

If that had been Walsall vs Southampton etc, you would have been praising a defensive performance. WE ARE cack. Therefore being able to defend is a must.

I agree, I just wish the media (and other assorted idiots) wouldn't build them up to be something they aren't, both playing for England and especially playing in the Premier League, the world's most expensive pinball league.
