One of the best games so far. The second half in particular was very exciting, with Italy needing a draw and having a goal disallowed in the last few minutes by the English officials.

Great stuff.

My memory may be wrong but didn't Italy scrape through the group stage in 2006 with a dodgy last minute goal?
If so that's karma for you!!

I beleive it's the first time ever that the two finalists from the previous world cup have failed to reach the knock out stages, even on the occasions when the losing finalists failed to qualify at all!

I'm glad they have gone, particually after the way they continually fell over, as if been shot whenever Rory Fallon went anywhere near them in the NZ game.

Great result for football! If only the other divers go the same way in the knockouts...

All Whites did well again. Glad to see that the travelling Kiwi fans (aka White Noise) are the first set of world cup fans in South Africa to have the riot police set on them!

When was the last time the holders were knocked out at the group stage?

And when was the last time the holders and the runners up were knocked out at the group stage?

Quagliarella's goal is my favourite of the tournament so far though!

Just goes to show what can be achieved with well organised teams, and NZ massively over achieved in their group.

If you look at Italy's side , where has all the talent gone ? An Italian team that can't defend , is a team that isn't going far. Thanks for coming though.

Del Piero retired, one of the greatest players when i was growing up so it makes me feel old :(

After him you ay got nothin, Canavarro past it, No Buffon either, Zambrotta past it, Pirlo (arguably past it).

They also looked as scary as a kitten up front.

I think that's their bad point, Quagliarella, Iaquinta and Di Natale are no Del Piero, Baggio and Cassano (in his pomp)

If they had got ex Atomic Kitten Kerry Katona up front, that would have been quite scary :D

I think I'm in a random mood tonight
