Colchester United (H) March 19th, 3pm

Wed Mar 16, 2016 9:36 pm

If you wanted to describe a League One team as "enigmatic" or "unpredictable" Colchester United would probably be near the top of the list. A glance at the League One table shows them in rock-bottom position, 9 points clear of safety (well, 10 really when you look at their goal difference) and they do look to be consigned to League 2......but consider the following - when we played the away fixture back in October they were respectably mid-table and only 4 points away from the play-offs, and since then they've only added 8 points - that's 5 draws and 1 win, in 5 months!! That's not all either - it came as a surprise to me to see that Colchester have scored just 1 goal less than Burton Albion  their big problem seems to be one of defence, or lack of it, notably on their travels. Hefty defeats at Bury, Burton, Wigan, Millwall and Fleetwood (each one by 4 or 5 goals) and yet a fortnight ago they went to Bradford City and came away with 3 points - a definite enigma there.

Leading scorer is George Moncur with 11 League One goals, but do not overlook Marvin Sordell - if that name seems familiar think of Watford and Bolton in the Premiership, and Burnley, and the Great Britain Olympic team of 2012, and he's still only 24......

Colchester's recent League One form:

16 Feb Chesterfield (H) Drew 1-1
20 Feb Bury (A) Lost 5-2
27 Feb Shrewsbury Town (H) Drew 0-0
1 Mar Bradford City (A) Won 1-2
5 Mar Port Vale (A) Lost 2-0
12 Mar Wigan Athletic (H) Drew 3-3

Jon Whitney may not have the easiest task in selecting a Saddlers' starting XI for this one - Adam Chambers was injured at Fleetwood, and Jon will want to be sure that our defence is solid - remember Colchester scored 3 against Wigan Athletic only last Saturday. Our strikers will no doubt be keen to play against the leakiest defence in League One (84 goals conceded to date) and if the same spirit displayed at Chesterfield and Fleetwood can be translated to Fortress Bescot I think it reasonable to predict a Walsall win by, say, 2-0 (Bradshaw and Sawyers to score). A repeat of Sam Mantom's outrageously cheeky backheel to set up Tom's goal at Fleetwood would be well worth seeing again.

Well... Considering theyve conceded 51 goals in 18 away games and not one clean sheet on their travels, you would like to think we could bag a few here. 3-1 with bradshaw, mantom and rico to score and put SODs home form behind us. UTS

A 2-0 home win, with Bradshaw and Hiwula for us, in front of 4,502, including 135 from Colchester.

Colchester are there for the taking tomorrow given their horrendous away form and goals conceded.

I'm going for 3-1 too, in front of 5,156 with probably less than 150 beleaguered U's.

Level on points with 2nd and 10 points clear of 7th as we head into the last 10 games. At this time of the season, given the position we're in and how our fortunes are turning sans-O'Dismal, we really really should be attracting at least 6,000+ home supporters to really get behind the boys and see if we can't nick 2nd... But you know

More sexy backheels please.

Mossive weekend this week - forget Easter, this is where we can make a difference. A home win, and other teams dropping poonts will put the pressure onto the other teams that are playing on Friday.

Saddlers to win 2-0 :D

Genuine case here for absolutely flying out of the blocks at Colchester tomorrow. They are bottom but are not turning up to just lie done for us. But look at their defensive record? its shyte.

I think if we can get a couple of goals first 20-30 minutes then they have no choice to open up their play and come at us which will leave then really open to our counter attacking play. Let's have a really strong home performance to welcome Whitney's first home game in charge.

Let's get this done.

I agree that this is an opportunity to put pressure on the teams above us. What I do not understand is how Betfair Exchange have Wigan at around 2-1 to win the league and we are over 8-1 although we are level on points.

I know Wigan have a strong team and they are on an ok run at present but they have had a strong team all season and we have just had a really bad run. If the results go our way on Saturday the whole thing will look very different.

Hey but what do I know.

That would be a great score, but knock at least 1,000+ off that gate figure, remember it's only us, the faithful 3.5K that are getting excited at the possibility of promotion, most of the football following public in the borough of Walsall are in a state of shock that their team (Vile) are in a state of collapse....now, should we miss out on auto promotion, and there is a possibility of another Wembley appearance, 30,000 hidden 'supporters' will suddenly be clamouring for tickets and dusting off that red and white scarf in the bottom drawer. :(

Let the kids in for free every game for all I care, I'd happily pay more for my ticket if it encouraged more kids to attend.

These home games always seem to go the same way...start off really slow, have a few shots on goal, go 1 down before end of first half, get an equaliser with 15 minutes left and then see the keeper make 5 world class saves in the last minute.

Frequent results like that show why the home results each season are so mediocre.

Colchester's defence is hopeless though so with the two week break it is critical 3 points are secured today and if possible the GD increased a little.

3-1.

Big, big and difficult game.

Our record at home against last year's bottom 4 and this year's current bottom four is:

Played 7
Won 1
Drawn 4
Lost 2

The thrashing of Crawley the only bright spot amongst some pretty poor stuff. This year's games against the bottom four we have played so far have all finished 1-1 at home.

So despite the last two games, no room for complacency. They gave us the runaround for long spells at their place.

Still, this is the JW era so I'm going to suggest a 4-2 victory with Kinsella doing a fine job in the Chambers role.

Does anyone know if Chambers is definitely out? I assumed he was with how the injury sounded on Tuesday, but very little mention of it from the club since.

Whitney seems to think Chambers will be o.k for today, he should know with his expertise.

It's certainly not a long term problem.

Nervous about this one. Home form has been the problem. Whilst winning last two away games is fantastic, it's hardly shocked or turned the tide of our already brilliant away form. Proof is in the pudding today. Has the managerial change made the difference?

Hope the nerves us supporters may feel aren't shared by the players and they turn in a strong performance today.

Could be 3 points off the top tonight.

And if my Uncle had boobs he'd be morbidly overweight....
