Chesterfield (H) F.A. Cup 2nd rd replay, Tue 15 Dec 7.45pm
For the third time in less than eight weeks we take on Chesterfield. We lost at home in the League, we drew away in the F.A. Cup, so logically we're due a win... :? ... but we know too well that logic plays little part where Walsall's concerned. The single most motivating factor should be the prospect of a 3rd round tie at Brentford and a happy reunion with SMITHLEFT!!
Chesterfield's form was poor in November leading up to Dean Saunders being shown the door, and things don't seem to have improved yet - they lost their 5th straight League One game yesterday by the only goal at Bury. The danger man is still Sylvain Ebanks-Blake, and if we can avoid disturbing the woodwork this time (as against three times at home and Sam Mantom's late effort away) we should be able to progress. Chesterfield's current form:
14 Nov Oldham Athletic (H) League One, Lost 1-2
21 Nov Port Vale (A) League One, Lost 3-2
24 Nov Doncaster Rovers (A) League One, Lost 3-0
28 Nov Swindon Town (H) League One, Lost 0-4
5 Dec Walsall (H) F.A. Cup 2nd round, Drew 1-1
12 Dec Bury (A) League One, Lost 1-0
Hopefully the weather might have eased by Tuesday, enabling us to play the kind of football of which we're capable - it's all very well saying that the conditions are the same for both teams, but a gale-force crosswind doesn't help either on-the-floor or hoofball. This game may be too soon for Tom Bradshaw, so there will probably be another opportunity for Cook to show us what he's made of (but try not to step in it........)
Griffin Park awaits, not to mention an appreciable chunk of cash for reaching the 3rd round, so I'll be very happy with any win - a scrappy 1-0 will be quite acceptable, courtesy of a Romaine Sawyers long range strike.
(or Milan Lalkovic, Sam Mantom, Jason Demetriou, Rico Henry, whoever.......)

Apart from Chesterfield fans the only bloke hoping we lose this will be Dean smith.I think we will win 2-1 Sawyers & Cooke for us and Sylvan(I wished he played for us) Ebanks Blake for them.

We've had 2 tough game's vs Chesterfield this season this one will be the same I'm going for a Walsall win on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
I read somewhere Chesterfield have had a massive 12 yes 12 fans book to go on the official coach so it should be a cracking atmosphere
Att : 2089 - 118 away fan's.

Hopefully we'll sneak through somehow. Will be a dire game in cack weather. Given my recent health I think I will apply for a note to be excused.

We'll squeak it 2-1, with Sawyers and Forde for us, in front of 2,200 + whatever Chesterfield bring [200?].

Re: Chesterfield (H) F.A. Cup 2nd rd replay, Tue 15 Dec 7.45
Looking forward to this one like any game at the moment. A real sense of optimism about the team is evident and I feel a similar performance to the on against Fleetwood in the cup will be the case again tonight.
2-0 To the Saddlers with a Downing and Lakovic goal.
Will be in the away end (singing section) for tonight's game hopefully a few will be joining tonight to spur us onto the might Brentford for the Dean Smith Derby.
Was a bit surprised at how many people actually attended the away end for the Fleetwood game and was even more surprised by the amount of people in a singing section not even attempting to join in or make any kind of noise. Bit of a shame really, hopefully more join in today and get behind the lads!

I remember the last time an FAC2R replay didn't promise much.

Loved Scotty Houghton.
Probably over 1,000 more people there for that than will be at tonight's game with more Torquay travelling a massive distance than there will be Chesterfield travelling far less.
Just a sign of where the FA Cup has gone I guess.

Thanks for sharing that... what a night that was... anyone watching again, count the missed opportunities too - I reckon there could have been another 6-7 goals but for the woodwork and great saves (although a couple of dodgy keeping moments too did allow goals).
What a team that was, Houghton, Marsh, O'Connor all so far forward... great to see again

Starting line-up against Chesterfield:
Etheridge
Downing
O'Connor
Taylor
Chambers
Demetriou
Evans
Mantom
Forde
Sawyers
Cook
Substitutes: MacGillivray, Baxendale, Lalkovic, Preston, Flanagan, Morris, Kinsella.
So..... no Tom Bradshaw, no Rico Henry either :?
(Edit... Chesterfield have Ebanks-Blake on the bench  )

2,023 will crowd in to the Bezza tonight, but I bet there will be a full police turnout expecting loads of trouble at such a monumental fixture!
Not that I would ever want to see a Walsall team lose a match (which after 50+ years of watching them has been a constant event) I'm not arsed about getting any further in the Cup (though the revenue would be good for an extension to a dilapidated villa in the Med)
What IS important is the possibility of promotion to the Championship, a once/twice in a lifetime experience, like Wembley, that I want to witness from my beloved club before I cark. :)
However, 2-1 win it is then, Sawyers & Downing. Groundsman to commit suicide after the match when the pitch resembles a Parks Pitch rugby field, after a stampede from a buffalo herd.
Just seen no Lalk or Henry (must be injured, or possibly being cosseted prior to a transfer :?: )
so I'll revert to a 1-0 defeat, knowing that super Cook is leading our attack :(

I don't want to jump onto the anti-Cook bandwagon but that man really can't play as a lone front man.
In fairness though, not many people can.
The problem we have got is that without Bradshaw we don't have that many different options - if any.

Of passing interest, I see that Brentford (spit) are 1-0 down at Cardiff after 19 minutes.....
(Edit - make that 2-0, 33 minutes)
Evatt gets the first Chesterfield yellow card, 35 minutes

Chesterfield have made one substitution at half-time. No change in the Saddlers' line-up, I bet Milan is champing at the bit !!!

A second yellow card for Chesterfield.......
The betting exchanges now have the draw as favourite.
The stats make the game sound dire - an hour gone and we've had 1 shot on target, Chesterfield have had none.
