Southend United (A) League One, Sat 15th Aug, 3pm
Off to Saafend we go on Saturday for our first away League One game of the season against the Shrimpers. Manager Phil Brown has been strengthening his striker options ready for life in League One, signing David Mooney (ex-Leyton Orient) and Noel Hunt (ex-Ipswich). It's also reported that he is actively seeking another striker, and has Izale McLeod in his sights. At the other end Brown has described offers made for his star young goalkeeper Daniel Bentley as "derisory". It was Bentley's penalty save in the Wembley shoot-out that earned Southend promotion from league 2. Their form so far this season:-
Sat 8 Aug Fleetwood (A) League One Drew 1-1
Tue 11 Aug Brighton & Hove Albion (H) League Cup Lost 0-1
Dean Smith will surely be tempted to play the same starting line-up that did so well against Nottingham Forest. Even if Andy Taylor has recovered from his knee injury it would seem harsh to change what is, after all, a winning side. The biggest hurdle to overcome could be one of sheer motivation - the players that were so evidently lacklustre against Oldham Athletic (with one or two notable exceptions) were somehow magically changed for the trip to Nottingham; could it be just "upping your game" because of the opposition and surroundings? If so, Dean has a lot of work to do, because with the best will in the world Southend will be a reality check.
Predictions.....hard to tell, this early in the season. We've seen two hugely different performances from the Saddlers already - which team is going to turn up on Saturday, and how strong is the opposition? If we play in the more attacking mode seen last night we should be in with a good chance of coming away with 3 points, and that's what I will go for - a 1-3 away win, with goals from Bradshaw (naturally), Sawyers (a goal a game), and Morris (who must surely start way ahead of Cook). :D

Hmmm, tough to call this. However, I will go for:
Southend 0 - 2 Walsall
(Mantom & Bradshaw)
Clean sheet - whoop!

I think it will be a tough game however we'll scrape it 2-1.
Lalk & bradshaw for us, Pigott for them.

A triumph, 3-2, we will blow them away with an early assault will see us steam in to a 3 goal lead, no need to say who will score the goals. Before we do our best to shoot ourselves in the foot, just about hanging on.

1-0 Walsall, Sawyers to score again.
About 300-400 Walsall

I can see a bore-draw for this one. 0-0. Nobody has fun.

Southend never had a single home attendance below 5000 in the league last season.

No idea how well Southend will do...they do have David Mooney and Noel Hunt upfront which is a good front two at this level but don't see them doing as well as Burton or Bury.
Will go for 1-1, bit of a cup hangover and 1 down with a late equaliser from Super Tom....

We are unlikely to play as openly for a league match as we did for the Capital Cup, so a cautious 1-1 draw, with Lalky scoring for us.

This was the sort of game we failed to win last season and one we need to win this season if we are to make the playoffs. Momentum is with us so I think we will scrape a 1-0, Cook to score (only kidding, Bradders of course.)

Just had a phone call at H/T from a mate who's there.
Battering them in the middle , apparently Chesney is having a blinder. Back 4 look solid and by all accounts Sawyers has been seen chasing back!!!!!!!!!!
Interestingly though a few of our boys had a run-in down by the beach with some of Southends boys , a coulple of lads in Wembley 2015 t-shirts were seen being thrown into the back of a riot van , so watch for the headlines in the E&S.
