Yeovil Town - League One (H) Tuesday 19th August 7.45pm
Early days yet, but three points for us definitely seem to be on offer as Yeovil grace us with their presence. Having been relegated from the Championship the wind has (for the moment) vanished from their sails with three competitive games played, all lost.
Aug 9th Doncaster Rovers (H) Lost 0-3
Aug 12th Gillingham (H) (League Cup) Lost 1-2
Aug 16th Gillingham (A) Lost 2-0
Bear in mind that Doncaster went on to lose heavily at home to Port Vale on the 16th.....
A couple of names stand out from their squad - James Hayter signed for the Glovers in 2012 (at one stage he was being touted as a possible Walsall signing, but his age (35) probably counted against him). Don't underestimate him though, he still holds the "fastest hat-trick" record, scoring 3 for Bournemouth after coming on as an 84th minute substitute in 2004! Another character which caught my attention is their goalkeeper Chris Weale....you may remember his performance for Shrewsbury when we threw everything including the kitchen sink at him, all to no avail. The Sloppies released him this year.
OK, it's very much a potential banana-skin, but I have to go for a decisive home win, around 3-0.
(Speaking of banana-skins....in the days of long ago when Walsall were unbeaten at home for an entire League season (Honestly!) we actually managed to lose at home in the F.A. Cup to a non-league team....Yup, Yeovil Town it was.)

For those with any interest in statistics, the undefeated League season referred to was (I think) 1960/61 and our home League record was as follows:
Played 23
Won 19
Drawn 4
Lost 0
Goals for 62, goals against 20.
Just think of that these days, scoring 62 goals at home (it's 2.695 goals per game on average)
Happy memories............... :D

Yeovil were turned over very comfortably at Gillingham today who'll probably be fighting relegation this season.
Looking at their team it does not look a promotion challenging team at all, it's fair to say they've overachieved massively the last few years and are on their way down now.
2-1 win.

Can't look last a win here. 3-1 us.
Geoff Whiting to miss all goals as he refills his teacup from his tartan flask, whilst listening to the opposition commentary on internet radio in his garden shed.

No, no, Exile, Sir Geoff's vacuum flask is plain stainless steel. His blanket is tartan (with pockets sewn in to contain his Werther's Originals).

Season before I was born. Dare one ask Welsh, but what was the form away from Fellows Park that season?

Nowhere near as impressive, from memory - I will have to look that one up, and get back to you. It was the season we finished as runners-up (to Bury?) in the same division we're in now!!

Quite correct Welsh, it was Bury although we beat them away, 4-1 I think and 1-0 at home. Both over the Christmas period if I remember correctly. Such heady days!

Nothing but a win good enough but we always kick start people's season
Jacksons to it il go for a tense 1-0 win. Sawyers shot from inside the area after one hundred neat passes

I hope to see a winger start on the right instead of Grimes.

Isn,t the season we won div 4 easily? The next season we finished second to Bury just piping QPR Might be wrong.
We had some great fowards then. Tony Richards, Colin Taylor. Ken Hodgkinson, Roy Faulkner, whom I believe was an amateur. When we won div 4 we had the highest wage bill in the country. £20 max plus more bonuses than anyone else.

We had been champions of Division IV the previous season. Then in Division III we were undefeated at home in the League when finishing runner-up to Bury, as above.
Being pedantic, I have to say that it's Ken Hodgkisson rather than Hodgkinson. I also find it interesting to think of Roy Faulkner as an amateur, as I was under the impression that we signed him from Manchester City where I can't imagine he had amateur status?
Speaking of Manchester City, we also signed our mossive goalkeeper John Savage from City a little before that time. He was about 6 foot 7 inches, and could easily launch the ball (heavy leather) into the opponents' goalmouth, no problem!!!

On the subject of Savages kicking.
Russia had recently put Sputniks into space and, as his kicks from hand went out of site, into the darkness above the floodlights, the comparison seemed rather comical.

I had the pleasure of meeting big John. He was the bigest person I had ever seen. It was in the week after he was sent off and gave away a pen. Tony Richards, who had scored previously, took over the gloves and saved the pen. he kept a clean sheet and we won one nil. What a player.

According to my records compiled at the time (schoolboy stuff!!)......
December 23rd 1960...... Walsall 1 Bury 0
December 26th............. Bury 3 Walsall 4
Our away League form that season, to answer Jeremy's question, was:
Played 23
Won 9
Drew 2
Lost 12
Goals scored 36, conceded 40.
Combined stats: Played 46, Won 28, Drew 6, Lost 12. Goal tally 98-60.
We finished on 62 points (only 2 points for a win), 6 behind Bury (champions), and 2 ahead of Q.P.R.
(EDIT..... The first game that season was a 1-1 draw at Port Vale.... and the second game was a win against Southend)
Spooky.........

And didn't we throw our arms about, at Gay Meadow, as the QPR score came over the Tannoy ?
Oh, the joy, as the seemingly endless line of traffic snaked its way back, down the A5.

Forde has trained enough now to be ready to start you'd imagine. Looking forward to seeing what he's like.

With Morris on the left (subbing, or in place of, Sawyers - a luxury) and Grimes and Bradshaw poaching hard, low crosses.

Re: Yeovil Town - League One (H) Tuesday 19th August 7.45pm
Can't help but feel that even at this early stage, this is an important game in terms of momentum and the psychology of the dressing room.
Win, and we are sitting fairly pretty on five points from three games (a more than adequate points ratio for a play off challenge). We are unbeaten and have won against one of the teams who were relegated from the Championship - Onwards and upwards!
Lose, and we are on two points, less than a point a game and without a League win. We have become the first team to concede against Yeovil and have two tough away games coming up. Criticism grows and pressure builds - already!
Or am I being over dramatic here?

I agree. Win and the two draws look decent. Lose and they look more like points dropped.

Starting line-up against Yeovil Town:
O'Donnell
Kinsella
Taylor
Downing
Holden
Grimes
Benning
Chambers
Sawyers
Clifford
Bradshaw
Substitutes: Baxendale, McGillivray, Flanagan, Morris, Bakayoko, Forde, Rowley.
(Slightly interesting note..... Yeovil have only named 6 substitutes - problems in their camp, I wonder?)
