Aston Villa (H) 5/8/14 K.O 7:45pm

Tue Aug 05, 2014 6:11 pm

XI O'Donnell, Kinsella, Downing, Chambers J, Taylor, Grimes, Sawyers, Clifford, Flanagan, Benning, Bradshaw
SUBS: Holden, Chambers A, Baxendale, Webber, Morris, Heath, Bakayoko, Henry, Rowley, Mantom, MacGillivray

Not good. O'Connor clearly suffering from that knock at Mansfield. And why is the captain on the bench?
Although Manton is back on the bench :D

Injuries in pre-season, manager not finding/missing out on his transfer targets, not replacing your captain, relying on youth and loans. This all sounds very 'its May and we've been relegated, these are the reasons why' to me. Mmmmm.

Don't understand why players at League 1 level have an agent. I can't imagine that these players have image rights, etc. to negotiate.

Vale now beating Albion, although albion are playing their reserves.

Sounds like we are playing okay though, if you think our side looks weak imagine being a Villa spanner  , worst side theyve had for at least 15 years.

A little odd to me too, on both those counts. If he really wanted a contract / club, wouldn't he get his 'agent' to come over here to 'negotiate' while he can play more games, impress some more, and maybe get a better deal. Why sit on your ass in another country!

His girlfriend and daughter are in France and his agent apparently represents a few French players of more renown than Manset

Attendance 6,559 with 3,837 in the away stands [and probably a fair few in the Homeserve too!].

1-0 fulltime.

Not a thrashing by any means, but Chesterfield beat this lot last week...

FT 0-1. Somehow kept a clean sheet in the second half with Holden and Rowley in central defence. I've read UTS enough over the summer to know this is literally impossible. Can anyone come up with a reasonable explanation for this unfathomable chain of events? Maybe it was Butler in a Holden costume?

Not quite 'this lot'. There was no Baker, Weimann, Delph, Agbonlahor, Hutton, Richardson, Senderos or Westwood for starters.

Because we don't have an endless budget and O'Kelly knows players well from both clubs due to his managerial roles there.

I'm guessing you mean did rather than didn't. Either they don't have the players we are looking for, there are better options out there or they are out of our budget.

My god Villa were awful...

For fudge sake our back line for the second half was a central midfielder that came up from our youth team last season playing out of position at right back. A central defender that is still in the youth team and hasn't been given a professional contract yet, an ageing slow 34 year old right back playing centre half at the end of his career and a first team pro that only signed a deal this time last week...

...and they still couldn't score in the second half!

No Walsall FC does not have a bottomless pit of budget but the constant rhetoric from some on here that we are skint is inaccurate and becoming utterly tiresome.

Summer recruitment so far has been average at best. No way this team has been fully assembled yet to manage a season at this level.

Don't understand the squad to be honest. It's all young unproven players with at best 7 seasoned pros at this level. We will go down For certain.

Totally agree derby saddler. Smiths transfer dealings. Ridiculous. No where near good enough to compete at this level.

I really hope we don't sign Webber, even though I think he is an okay player, the signing of him is utterly pointless. Now I am usually someone who is very positve about the team, but if we sign Webber, a player who is best used as a number 10, then I will be very irritated. We have a wealth of talent at that number 10 role, Sawyers, Baxendale, Grimes, Mantom, Flanagan... and yet we have 1 right winger in Jordan Cook, and he is injured and considered as a forward!

Not a clue what is happening in right midfield, and it is begining to worry me that it looks like Grimes is being shoe horned there just like Nicholls and Baxendale have been before him.

I find it hard to know what to think about our finances, listen to some on here and you'd think the club is constantly on the verge of financial collapse and will instantly fold should we dare to make any sort of serious investment in new players. Listen to others and it sounds like Bonser is sitting on a mountain of gold laughing away at us all.
