Brentford (H) League One Sat 18th Jan 3pm

Wed Jan 15, 2014 10:03 am

We welcome the Bees (well, most of them) who really are buzzing this season. You may remember that way back in September we went to Leyton Orient, who had won 8 games on the trot....it's practically the same scenario on Saturday, as Brentford meet us having won their last 8 matches. They're not the highest scorers (44 goals) but their defence is as mean as ours, with an identical 23 goals conceded. Surprisingly their last loss was in October at Stevenage of all places - just goes to show that even the best teams can have an off day!!

Brentford's most recent 6 League One games:

14 Dec Oldham Athletic (H) Won 1-0
21 Dec Preston North End (A) Won 0-3
26 Dec Swindon Town (H) Won 3-2
29 Dec MK Dons (H) Won 3-1
1 Jan Peterborough United (A) Won 1-3
11 Jan Port Vale (H) Won 2-0

Clayton Donaldson is their leading scorer with 13, with Fulham loan signing Marcello Trotta already weighing in with 8. They've also got this bearded chap called Grigg who has managed 4 (tap-ins rather than penalties, I believe). Another player to watch out for is Alan Judge, signed from Blackburn Rovers in the January transfer window.

Much as I strive to be optimistic at all times I have to say that if we play against Brentford at the same standard we did against Oldham then a defeat could be on the cards. Brentford aren't the side who will miss open goals from 2 yards out, and you can't expect O'Donnell to constantly save us.

Tell you what - if we can get a 1-1 draw out of this I'll be very pleased. Lalkovic for us, and Will Grigg to shovel a penalty over the bar late on. :D

5-0 to the Saddlers, for Brentford's last defeat of the season, forcing the Wulfs into the play offs to be beaten by us.

Grigg with a hat trick of wayward shots, that catch the wind and blow back over their keeper's head. Brandy with a dive(ing) header, and Lalkovic with his trademark beat a man, then curl a shot into the corner from the outside edge for the box.

Definitely would take a draw and have a very bad feeling about this one. However I had the same feeling about Peterborough.

Therefore I will go with:

Walsall 2 - 2 Bees

Donaldson and Grigg (sub appearance) for them

Brandy and Westcarr Pen for us.

5,110 ATT with 780 Bees.

2-1 Saddlers, Brandy with the winner after Brentford open the scoring with Donaldson. Downing taps in an equaliser from a corner at the end of the first half and we go on to dominate and push for the win in the second half.

Some impressive wins in their last 8 - 3-0 at Preston stands out from a strong bunch of results. As decent a football team as we are, I do think they will have too much firepower for us on this occasion and win 2-1 [Westcarr for us late on].

It would be nice to get a 5,000 crowd against the league leaders, with the Nylons bringing 700-800.

Expect Brentford to win but Walsall can raise their game against better teams...so wouldn't be surprised by a Walsall win and they are due a good footballing performance.

If Walsall do win then they really do need to raise their ambitions and think more positively and attack with more confidence for the reamining half of the season. They need to accelerate their attacking mentality and efforts.

If Lalkovic continues to improve and get more consistency, Walsall do have a reasonable chance.

Walsall were pretty poor at Brentford but did improve, Brentford now better than what they were.

Lalkovic and Brandy attacking a defence does create visions of success, add to that a little Baxendale neatness here and there....a little Westcarr experience.....some solid reliable efforst by Chambers' boys....some marshalling of defence by Butler....and a keeper improving all the time....Walsall will be giving any team in the division something to think about and deal with.

Should we win this one? Probably not.

Can we win this one? Most definitely!

We have a history of performing against the 'big' teams (however it is quite sad that a 'big' club is now one that has lots of money and without it would be in the same situation as us) Wolves, Sheffield United, Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday & Charlton have all fallen to us over recent seasons and under Deano.

Hopefully we will go for them straight from the off, however I think I would be inclined to bring Purkiss back in for a bit of stability down the right hand side given the attacking strength of Brentford.

I'm going for a 1-1 draw with Lalkovic for us and Donaldson for them.

Good point.... Donaldson should really be playing for Scunthorpe, shouldn't he? :D

I think it's a bit of an urban myth that James Chambers is the weaker of the two defensively. He doesn't get beaten very often and is as good a full back as we've had at stopping crosses coming in. I'm a big fan of Purkiss, but there's very little to separate them.

I'd take a point.

I too have been very impressed with Chambers this year, however I just feel that with a striker like Donaldson up front a bit of aerial prowess may need to be in order. Nothing against Chambers as I wouldn't have thought many teams in this league will have a selection dilemma at RB!

I can see almost a mirror image of Tuesday night. 1-0 us with them playing lovely stuff and missing chances (that scruffy forward).

I think sawyers is due a goal with a bit of trickery involved on the hour mark. 5018 with 678 bees.

come on me babies lets cement this 6th place!!

They'll score but we'll get more. 3-1 to us in a pant moistening display.

I read somewhere or other that Foreshaw and Dean are out for them and they've always look good when i've seen them.

Butler to kick the beard of that striker on their bench - his name escapes me.

We'll need to be loads better than Tuesday to get anything out of this.

I think Dean might have a little tinker today. Wouldn't surprise me to see Featherstone starting instead of Sawyers.

Hope I'm wrong but envisage a narrow defeat in front of a disappointing sub 5,000 crowd.

Yeah this is what i'm thinking too.

But when it comes to Walsall whatever I think will happen doesn't happen. So I think a draw.

But now that won't happen either.

So 3 points it is :D

Starting line-up against Brentford:

O'Donnell

Chambers
Taylor
Mantom
Downing
Butler

Brandy
Chambers

Sawyers
Westcarr
Lalkovic

Substitutes: Purkiss, Featherstone, Hemmings, Lewis, Benning, Baxendale, Hewitt.

....and yes, Will Grigg starts for the Bees.

....and slightly off this topic, Jamie Paterson starts for Florist (probably marked by Blackburn's Scott Dann)

Starting on the "and elsewhere's",

Sheffield United 1 Bradford City 0 (7 min)

and more worryingly.... Shrewsbury Town 0 Rotherham United 1

also, putting us out of the play-off zone.....Peterborough 1 Tranmere Rovers 0

Rotherham and Peterbrough both scored so pushed us out of the playoffs. Still very early days yet. It`s in our hands. (or feet)
