Maybe all of these satisfied supporters have not noticed that in the last six away games the team has managed two goals.Perhaps Smith has also missed this?If money is the problem why do we have two of his signings who never appear in the side? It's time Smith woke up to the problem and if he is capable!

Thanks to yourself and FBIG for 'shoot yourself in the foot' posts...just go back three spaces 'do not collect £200' and count how many on here predicted a defeat...............

How many people across the country, with no connection or affinity for Walsall FC, would have looked at the league table and form book and come to the conclusion that "away win" was a distinct possibility in this fixture? It's not a symptom of blind optimism aka "happy clapping" aka supporting your team to have favoured us in that fixture.

Oh, and a rather soft penalty being the only margin of victory hardly suggests those with hopes for a Walsall win were wildly out of touch with reality. Football throws up results like this. If you're in any doubt, why not find a Sunderland fan who was at Goodison Park yesterday and ask them?

Your post added no value save to illustrate your smallmindedness and lack of understanding about football.

C- Must try harder.

Don't know why so much fuss over one bad result, if we get 7 points out the next 3 games will everyone be so quick to post there opinions then, I'm sure smith can see we are a striker short but is he really going to come out and lambast the team we have and demoralize them? Get over yourselves for gods sake, it's a far reach for the play offs and even more so with te teams above us bound to reinforce with the budgets they have compared to ours, we are a work in progress just stick with it, all come good In thr end IMO Uts

And there's still four days worth of banality available until the polls close.

Correct.

People hark on and moan about strikers, but the fact is we are struggling to create chances.

Why all of a sudden is the rest of the team immune to criticism? In my opinion the wide players are generally poor at creating things and getting in the box to support said striker. Baxendale needs to be dropped he is largely gash on the wing despite all his effort. When Westcarr gets out wide to use the ball, the rest of the team stands still, no one moves into the box.

Sawyers, nor Mantom get up to support the forwards. They are never in the box. Sawyers could score loads if he took a risk and moved into the box.

I like Baxendale. I think he has good feet and an intelligence about his play - when he's in the hole rather than on the wing. He's not a winger.

Julian Gray is a winger. I'm wondering why we signed him as an aging player (ie not "one for the future") if we're not going to give him a meaningful run out.

Still wondering why we saw so much of McQuilkin in preseason and appeared to court his signature when again we won't deploy him. That's not to suggest I think he's the answer, mind. I have virtually no idea how good (or bad) he is.

Midfield doesn't look right at the moment.

I too, think he's a great player in the right position, but we're wasting him to accomodate our multitude of number 10s.

Time for Hemmings and Gray to be given a chance (at least).

Baxendale has been poor of late and it is time for him to either move inside or take his place on the bench. Hemmings always makes us look far more dangerous when he is on.

Next four games are pivotal to our season. The way we are at the moment they could all go any one of three ways. They will all be tight. Smith and O'Kelly need to liberate their thinking and free themselves from their own dogma. I think at the moment they are accepting of the fact that the games will be tight and hoping that things will fall our way. If our objective is to stay up then that way of thinking will do us fine as things will fall our way enough times to get us to 55 points with a bit to spare. But that would be a really disappointing mind-set given the platform that Smith and O'Kelly have manufactured so well.

I hope that they do something different tomorrow. I hope that our personnel and formation catch Gillingham out. We've got attacking options so let's broaden our thinking and use them. With Adam Chambers back we have a really solid back six. So be creative with the other five. If that means Mcquilken getting a game, Hewitt starting up front with Baxendale behind him then go for it. Just do something different because if the defensive part of the team had been as ineffective as the offensive half then we'd be near the bottom and declaring an emergency.

Something different has got to be done. Carrying on doing the same will just result in the same outcome: promising that little bit more than we can deliver. Given previous seasons that might not be the end of the world, but against what could've been would be a crying shame.

Hewitt is not the answer though.
We need to utilise the loan market for a decent striker now.
Dropping baxendale and playing either Gray or Hemmings is also a must at present.

Agree completely. The matches we've lost this season have been those where we've been predictable and stayed true to the players and tactics we've utilised when those sides have scouted us.

Vale worked out that if you kick Sawyers, we're really easy to defend against and it's only because he's such a talent that more haven't found joy in doing the same. We can't count on a lad in his first full season to do all the attacking graft himself though, so need to mix things up now and again. Similarly though, isolating Baxendale on the wing isn't doing anyone any favours - particularly when he doesn't have the license or know-how to get himself into the box. I'd be half tempted to hip give 4-4-2 a try, and was disappointed we didn't do just that in the second half at Bristol. If nothing else, it would have given Hewitt one last chance to impress in the only system we haven't tried him in yet.
