Shrewsbury Town (A) League One Sat 14th Dec, k/o 1pm
OK, in the time-honoured phrase, we can now concentrate on our League One activity having relinquished the main Wembley ambition cup-wise. There is a "Cup" connection of course, as it was Shrewsbury Town we beat 3-0 in the first round - hopefully they will play to the same standard we saw at Bescot. Note that the kick-off for this game is 1300hrs (1pm) - if you get there for 3pm you'll be met by everyone on their way out!!
Shrewsbury's current form: (last 6 League One games)
Oct 26 Brentford (A) Lost 1-0
Nov 2 Sheffield Utd (H) Won 2-0
Nov 16 Port Vale (A) Lost 3-1
Nov 23 Notts County (H) Won 1-0
Nov 26 Oldham Athletic (H) Lost 1-2
Nov 30 Stevenage (A) Won 1-3
Shrewsbury seem to have a similar problem to ourselves in the goalscoring department. Their leading scorer Tom Bradshaw has 5 goals but hasn't scored since early October. Liam McAlinden won't figure as Wolves have recalled him early from his loan period, and Shrewsbury's activity in the loan market has secured striker Tom Eaves from Bolton.
As far as League One position is concerned, Shrewsbury are only three places below us (22 points compared to our 27) and they've scored one more goal than we have (21 against 20), but our defensive record is a little better (18 conceded against their 22).
This is a game we really should (must?) win if we are to maintain a challenge for the play-off places. I'll go for a 0-2 win, with Lalkovic and Butler bringing home the bacon.

Difficult game,
These next four games against Shrewsbury, Carlisle, Bristol City and Gillingham are pretty much make or break for us in terms of play-offs and mid-table mediocrity.
I'm going for a hard fought 2-1 win with Hemmings and Westcarr with the gigantic Eaves for them.
987 from Walsall.

With the way things are going at the moment, things will probably take a familiar pattern and then follow last seasons scoreline.

Yes i see a repeat of the complete battering we gave them last time and contrived to lose 1-0 because we couldn't hit a barn door that day.
There are a few things he can try to change up the attack, im not confident he will.
Id drop Westcarr back to where he is best, behind a striker, or try him out wider whilst dropping one of our ineffective wingers. Either that or put Baxendale back in behind Westcarr. I fail to see why he has signed Gray if he isnt going to play him either, our wingers are absolute crud most of the time and he still cant get on the pitch. I wouldnt start Sawyers in this game, and Featherstone was the only player to come out with any credit against Orient for me.
Either way, id like to see Hewitt given more than a paltry 8 minutes if we are chasing the game.

The Sawyers one is a tough one, as he was magnificent in the Cup game against The Shrews but hasn't quite hit those heights since. I do agree that Westcarr was vital in our good run last year sitting in-behind Grigg, however it's hard to say whether Hewitt has the same goal threat as Grigg did. I wouldn't mind seeing Westcarr behind Lalkovic, unlikely but it's got to be worth a try....
I think I would go.
O'Donnell
J.Chambers Downing Butler Taylor
Baxendale Chambers Mantom Hemmings
Westcarr
Lalkovic

Hewitt up top with Westcarr in behind him for me, Baxo and Hemmings as the wingers. Lalkovic is just not good enough, a waste of space most of the time and in my opinion undeservedly gets started constantly when he doesn't do anything other than 500 steps overs before getting tackled, had 2 good games in his entire Walsall career - save him as an impact player. Hewitt is constantly left on the bench and being given 2 minute cameos, which really annoys me as I really rate him as a hard worker - hell he was in the team when we beat Wolves and battled on his own against 2 championship quality centre halves without a player in behind him. However because he doesn't play as much as I think he should, 90% of people on this board are saying he is a waste of wage, when I think personally it is a waste for him to be sitting on the bench when Lalkovic runs around doing jack all.

Yep fair enough, Hewitt was very impressive in both of the Wolves games and his volley in JPT was class! Deano must have faith in him if he hasn't bought a striker in during the loan window. I think whatever way we go Westcarr should be playing behind a main striker, then bringing Sawyers, Lalkovic et al on with 20/25 minutes to go will make us more dangerous as the game progresses, will be interesting as I feel the team we start to see in the next couple of games will be the one that he sticks with for the rest of the season.

Stick with your first choice, the team have forgotten the meaning of footy, (ie to score goals) and the shrews have improved since our cup win against them...... 0-2 defeat.

Looking foward to going to this one.
We need to bring 'sexy ' back - so got to be a 2-0 win to the Saddlers.
Westcarr both, he scores when he wants..............

If we don't win this it will be one win in seven, not good enough. It could be a run like last year.Maybe time for a loanee or two to liven things up.

Sack the board, disgrace that we sold Dann for an inflated market price.

Graham Turner: “It is a case of how much notice do we take of how Walsall play and how much do we concentrate on our own performance? And I’m leaning heavily to (an approach of) forget about Walsall. Let’s just concentrate on the way we want to do things.”
Good news for us. When teams concentrate on the way they play rather than the way we play, we tend to do much better.
2-1 Walsall. O'Donnell with a throw that takes a big deflection and a headed Westcarr penalty for us. Max Boyce with a late consolation for them.

Haven't a clue but am constitutionally incapable of predicting a Saddlers' defeat, so I'll go for 1 - 1.
Dean Smith for us (in off the crossbar, naturally).

Sold 1,050 tickets. Shame we didn't sell out but time of year and the lack of last year's novelty meant we would inevitably fall short.
I'm looking forward to what should be a decent game that sees us back to winning ways. I predict a Crewe style 3-0 in front of 5,885 with 1,002 Walsall fans (some who brought tickets will inevitably not make it due to health, the pub feeling cosy or pre-match incarceration).

Re: Shrewsbury Town (A) League One Sat 14th Dec, k/o 1pm
After 10 minutes.......we've had three attempts on goal, one of which was on target. Had a corner as well.
Shrewsbury are winning 3-0 in fouls.
Edit ----- after 30 minutes, it sounds pretty even. Both sides have made 5 goal attempts, with 2 or 3 on target. Corners...2 each. Fouls now 4-1.
Our goal attempts have been Paul Downing (2 headers), Andy Taylor, Romaine Sawyers and Craig Westcarr. No mention at all of Milan Lalkovic, perhaps he's still trying too many step-overs.....
