Stoke City (A) League Cup 2nd rd 28th Aug 7.45pm
Having got through to the 2nd round of the Capital One Cup I suppose that counts as a "Cup run" compared to some of our recent Cup history! So we're away to the pride of the Potteries on Wednesday, with a 7.45pm kick off.
As members of the Premiership, Stoke have only played two league games this season, winning one and losing one. Their full activity this season is as follows:
August 3rd (Friendly) Macclesfield Town 1 Stoke City 2
August 4th (Friendly) Wrexham 0 Stoke City 1
August 10th (Friendly) Genoa 0 Stoke City 0
August 17th (Premiership) Liverpool 1 Stoke City 0
August 24th (Premiership) Stoke City 2 Crystal Palace 1
Stoke had a management switch in the close season of course, parting company with Tony Pulis and installing Mark "Sparky" Hughes. According to reports, Hughes is attempting to introduce a more cultured style of football to the Britannia - perhaps not too difficult when compared to some of the hoofball seen there in previous seasons. The obvious long-ball recipient is Peter Crouch, standing as he does some eleven foot tall. So far he hasn't done himself any favours under the Hughes regime though, and he was substituted near the end of the Palace game. Etherington was also subbed after 70 minutes, making way for Jermaine Pennant. Stoke certainly have some high calibre players on their books, but I wonder how seriously they're going to take the League Cup - the Premiership is obviously their number one priority, and they did have three players booked on Saturday.
If we can re-discover our shexy football we may surprise all concerned and come away with a draw. However a lot will depend on our not giving the likes of Peter Crouch free headers.......
Attendance last Saturday against Palace was 25,270 by the way - I would guess that Wednesday will see a reduction to around 9,000

The fans on their forum were talking about fielding a strong team against us so they can spank us and get confidence and fitness levels up.

They shouldn't be allowed not to in my opinion. They are Stoke City, not won anything for decades, sums up everything that is wrong with football today.

Hughes is in exactly the same position as he was when he faced us at this stage last season. So I fully expect he'll do the same thing and pick a side that is 75% as strong as it can be with the other 25% on the bench poised to come on.

According to the competition rules, 30 minutes extra time then penalties if necessary. (rule 13.4)
The rules also state that all clubs must play their strongest available side - any 'weakened' teamsheets have to be explained to the Football League.

According to local radio adverts, commentary of the match will be broadcast live on Signal 2 radio (DAB and 1170am)
I'm pretty sure that you can get a decent reception on medium wave in the West Midlands,
I have to say that I've heard the game advertised loads of times today.
Must be a massive game for Stoke.

No, please, not penalties!
We are worse than England at penalties. I still remember last seasons JPT game against Vale!

Much to enjoy in this impressively inept preview of the game by the Independent. I suspect that the notoriously understaffed Indie is farming this sort of stuff out to "interns" these days. Either that or the E&S's Scottish toilet thief is moonlighting.
Mind you, the typo that rendered tonight's opponents as "Stroke" raised a chuckle.

Alas, work is keeping me in the desolate North tonight and Saturday so we may have to have a kiss and a cuddle at M*!"^€#x. I'll be under the 20ft high flaming wicker effigy of Paul Franks being bummed by Derek Dougan. xxx

Good preview except for the fact that there is nothing about the match and hardly anything about either of the teams playing in it. :D

Also the totally inaccurate bit about "both of Walsall's League wins have come from away games" ...
