Tranmere Rovers (H) League One 3/8/13

Thu Aug 01, 2013 7:27 am

We welcome the posh scousers as our opponents on the opening game of the new season. A broadly similar club to ourselves in terms of achievements, Tranmere seemed to be on a turbo-powered mission to the Championship last term until it all started to go pear-shaped after Christmas. This coincided with their leading striker on loan Jake Cassidy being recalled by our old friends the Dingles. He was at the time also the leading scorer in League One. Tranmere eventually finished two places below us, but manager Ronnie Moore has been busy signing strikers of a certain age - notably Akpo Sodje (aged 33) who was released by Scunthorpe in the summer, and Ryan Lowe (34) who had the same experience at MK Dons.

There isn't any meaningful current form, although Tranmere were beaten by Wrexham 2-0 in a pre-season friendly.

The referee for Saturday is Brendan Malone, three years on the League list. Last season he was in charge of 25 games, and showed 73 yellow cards and 5 red.

Predictions? If we can persuade our multitude of midfielders that one or two of them might attempt to score as well as tippy-tap, there could be goals for both sides. I'll stick with my forecast as stated in the predictions thread and go for a Saddlers win by 2-1.

Bogey team.
Think we'll lose 2-1 and the wave of optimism comes crashing down.

Beginning of a tough but fun season I think, one which will have many ups and many downs.

Walsall 2 - 0 Tranmere

Baxendale
Lalkovic

We all suddenly remember that 90th minute feeling but a good counter finishes off the Tranmere - super sub Lalkovic.

A steady 1-1 to start the season I think.

Butler with our goal.

They have a Sodje. This could make the fixture tricky. We'll shade it 2-1.

Any win will do, but I think it will be a 1-1 draw. Mantom for us in front of a 5,176 crowd, including 752 Trannies.

A little more spice added to the Tranmere game comes with the news that they've signed Jason Koumas on a one-year contract. The 33 year old has ended his self-imposed two year exile from the game ("he fell out of love with football") and Ronnie Moore reckons he hasn't lost any of the ability that persuaded the Baggies to shell out £2 million for him, and then get more than £5 million when they transferred him to Wigan in 2007.

Why Tranmere Rovers, you may ask? That's where he began his professional career in 2002.......

My heart says a comfortable 2/3-0 win. My head says probably a 1-1 draw.

as for Koumas, hope the little knobber gets snapped in two, didn't he score that free kick off the bottom of the wall against the Bogladies...

Someone mentioned bogey team, and ive never seen us win against Tranmere i dont think :?

Can't have seen us against them many times then - beat them 2-0 in corresponding fixture last season!

Tranmere have sold 500 in advance and it's pay on the day, they brought 550 odd towards the end of last season on a Tuesday night whilst being on a horrific run, why are people expecting 4-600 of them? It'l be closer to 4 figures than it will 750, never mind 500.

Sorry, but this has the markings of the safest 1-1 draw on the coupon, would love us to start with a win but it probably won't happen, as Deano tinkers with the line up that we all expect, which throws our flowing footie into a mish mash of everybody trying to do everybody elses job, until Mantom pops up from nowhwere with a late equalizer! :)

3,360 in attendance 270 plastic scousers.
