It's rather pleasing to not have played amazing tonight yet still win convincingly . Each part of the team ( defence , midfield and attack ) are all doing their jobs , working as a unit as well as improving individually. Centre half partnership working well as its bringing the best out of Butler. In the middle Mantom and Chambers looking like a useful engine room and with Brandy providing the flair and attacking threat it takes the pressure off losing Flo and let's our front two do a proper strikers job ie hold it up when needed bring each other into play and slot the ball home ( westcarr was a touch unlucky tonight but its not his main asset )
All in all a very pleasing nights work infront of the nations football addicts. Well done Walsall very well done indeed!!
Up the Saddlers . Forever :D

Re: Portsmouth (H) League 1 Friday 4/1/13.
That was perhaps the most comfortable and easiest win of the season, against an awful side bereft of confidence, despite us being below par. The BBC match stats say we had an incredible 25 shots (14 on target) and we should have won by a far wider margin. Mind you, it also says that two chances were wasted by our "substitute Darren Westcarr" (who?) and that this was "Walsall's best home win over the season" (what?) The same article credits Guy Whittingham with saying that we've just come off "a long run without a run." And they say things ain't what they used to be.

 Substitute Darren Westcarr! Sounds like some bricklayer Deano threw on the pitch, we all must of missed him!
I also loved the Adam Chambers chant! THERES ONLY TWO ADAM CHAMBERS, TWO ADAM CHAMBERS!

Super result yet again! Can't really argue with much that has been put on here. Thought the whole team played well, special mentions must go to:
Darlow - Looked confident and came for crosses, major improvement and is slowly changing my opinion of him
Butler - So dominant, can't remember him losing a header in the air.
Downing - Quiet, yet so effective. Composed and his relationship with Butler is going from strength to strength.
Chambers - Like a new player - superb yet again.
Brandy - Love this lad, quick, runs at defenders and is getting his rewards with goals.
GRIGG - Has taken a hell of a lot of stick but fair play he is quickly becoming an integral member of the squad - looks a lot stronger, holding the ball up well and most importantly of all, scoring. I said on another thread a few days ago he could be a 15 goal a season striker and based on tonight I maintain that view.
Near perfect festive/new year period has come to an end. 35 points from 27 games is looking very comfortable. Who knows what will happen now but based on current performances we have got to be looking at a 14th placed finish at least - I believe top half is a real possibility. UTS

Re: Portsmouth (H) League 1 Friday 4/1/13.
Darlow- 7 1 or 2 shaky moments and dropped a catch but looks good still.
Purkiss- 7 solid as ever
Benning- 6.5 Little bit nervy today and got beat a little bit more then the others but still generally good
Butler- 8 Solid lead the defence well
Downing- 8 Very strong and has made a good partnership with Butler
Chambers- 8 Fair play I'll hold my hands up after being critical in the last game he did great tonight, worked hard, didn't waste a single pass and didn't give away any fouls that I noticed .
Mantom 6- Gave away a few passes and sometimes didn't close down quick enough but he seems to have a good partnership with chambers and his return has coincided with our good run of form.
Patterson-7 Gave away few balls and made some mistakes but he looked better in his overall play I think.
Brandy 9- Has great pace and defenders seem to panic when he runs at them, has developed a good partnership with grigg and westcarr. Involved with both goals also won us a ridiculous amount of fouls.
Westcarr-7 Overall play was pretty good although his lack of pace did show at times, however he should have had a goal with the amount of chances he had as he sent at least 3 good shots into the keeper.
Grigg- 8 Did pretty well, battled hard despite being out muscled by the majority of their defence

Im amazed their fans put up with that bunch of players though. Mendez Laing looked about 3 stone overweight and was basically the epitome of a footballer that doesnt care if he wins or loses. They lost every second ball, and None of them were exactly using it as a shop window were they.

A significant number of those Pompey players are just mercenaries to pick up as much as they can on short term contracts, and then buzz off as soon as they enter administration and financial reality kicks in when the Trust take over. And boy did it show.

Delighted Grigg is reaping the reward for his hard work, knew it was coming.
Westcarr whilst he should have scored a couple I am pretty certain he is the main reason of our upturn in form.
Chambers has been immense over Christmas, hungry hard in the tackle and gets forward, like a new signing!

Really enjoyed the game - a rare emotion this season.
i would like to mention Grigg who I thought was outstandng in leading the line and should have been Man of the Match.
Portsmouth were poor and its a sad reflection of the game today that they are where they are - whatever we think of the financial dealings the fans are always the ones that suffer.
Overall though a good solid performance and another win can only breed confidence.
Taylor mentioned the P word in his prematch Interview - its nice to dream.........

So who do you think we'll get in the next round?
When is the cup draw & what number are we?

Paterson for some reason.
I thought it was between Grigg and Chambers.
