Good preview Neil, as always, but can I be pedantic and point out that Douglas Bader was decidedly NOT from Doncaster!!!!
Born February 1910 in St. Johns Wood (parents and older brother brought there from India specifically for the birth), spent his first two years in the Isle of Man before being considered fit enough for India's climate. Brought back to England when the family moved back in 1913 and lived at Kew until 1922. His mother re-married a year or so later, and her new husband (Bader's stepfather) was the vicar of Sprotborough, a small village of scattered houses near Doncaster. Packed off to St. Edward's school near Oxford in 1924, and managed to get in to Cranwell in 1928.
