Dont Worry, there are still plenty taking the pee

Goalie looks like a rabbit in the headlights tbh

We were dire up until the penalty which was very much against the run of play

They missed two or three decent chances in the opening 15 mins

Better after though

63 minutes - Gnakpa replaced by Alex Nicholls - interesting substitution there, no intention of shutting up shop! CH would have left any subs until 88th minute

This is exactly why you don't right a player off after 1 full game! to say you think Jarvis is poor fair enough, but to say he is a poor signing and got nothing to offer is crazy, I do wish Walsall fans would use their brain sometimes and have a bit of patience..

Saying this he might not score again, so be it, but guaranteed the people who slated him to start with will be praying he doesn't score again just so they can claim their booing was valid.

Rant over, cracking 3 points, very happy with the start of the season! :D

What a fantastic away win. To win it 2-0 after the dodgy start we had. After 15 minutes it looked like it would be a long afternoon. Very encouraging.
In other news, I won £141.38 on a 5 match accumulator thanks to MK Dons, Charlton, Huddersfield, Sheffield United and Carlisle's winner 3 minutes from time. Not bad after putting just a fiver on!

good professional performance today after the first 15 minutes. The penalty put away well by Jarvis, keeper going in opposite direction changed the game. Gave us a bit of confidence and demoralised them a touch.
Difficult to define Grof's performance. Made a couple or three decent saves and caught a couple of crosses but missed a couple as well,Hesitant at times Back four were excellent and Manny superb in the air. Taundry and Chambers worked hard nullifying their mid field and made the odd break. Grigg and Jarvis won fair amount of ball but don't have that touch of Macken class. Claude and Hurst gave good support to front two and the full backs. All in all a good team performance working hard for each other. MOTM Butler/Smith difficult to split.

Great result and good performance judging by commentary and reports from those who are there. Really pleased for Jarvis, hopefully this can kick start his Walsall career. Will keep the boo boys quiet, at least for the first 10 minutes of his next performance. Judging so far I reckon we have the makings of a decent team

Just got back. Great performance from the lads. What really pleased me was that they tried to play football throughout. What a change from the hoof ball we have been subjected to in recent seasons. We might be on to something this year

Despite Bournemouth's poor start to the season a very good and important result after throwing away a 2 goal lead in our last away game .

A massive well done to Deano for having the guts to leave Lancashire out of the side following his poor showing last week .

Great result and a good performance, apart from the first 15 minutes when we were all over the place. In fact, had Bournemouth taken their chances and Westlake not made an excellent goaline clearance, we could well have been 2 or 3 down. The suddenly, a break down the left, a cross by Sadler and the ref was pointing to the spot. Up stepped Jarvis who confidently knocked it in and it was a different game. The rest of the first half was far more even as we started to knock the ball about with confidence.

Second half, we were played some really good football, and had the lion's share of possession. Once the second goal went in there was only going to be one winner, despite one or two scares and another goal line clearance, this time from Smith. Jarvis' second goal was a rare thing indeed - a headed goal by a Walsall striker from a corner!

Apart from the increased possession, what I like about us this season is that the midfield players are getting into the opposition box more or close to the box and then releasing short passes for others to run onto. Lots of that in the second half today from Chambers, Hurst and Taundry.

Player performances:

Grof - Jesus, did we miss Jimmy. The guy was a bag of nerves and has to thank the defence for the clean sheet. He looked OK the only other time I have seen him (Greenock Morton) so hopefully we can put today down to the lack of experience, but no doubt I will worry the next time I see his name in the starting line up.

Full backs both played well and worked hard. Both supported well going forward.

Butler and Smith also played well, particularly in the air.

As a unit the back four did well apart from the start where we were cut open down the channels between centre back and full back. Once they sorted that out it was mostly regulation stuff.

Taundry had another fine game, busy as usual, but also creative, especially in the second half. Gnakpa had his best game today, due to the fact that he defended and tackled far more than in previous matches. No doubt Smith has been at him about this. He wasvisibly tired when substituted on the hour. Hurst had another good game and Chambers return seemed to give us a little more energy than we had against Yeovil last week. If he could kick with his left foot he would surely be playing at a higher level.

Grigg and Jarvis worked well together. Grigg made lots of runs off the ball and made himself available, and Jarvis put himself about and won some good headers, particularly the one which ended up in the net.

By the time the substitutions were made, the result was in the bag, but none of them had a negative impact on the shpe or balance of the team.

Overall, really chuffed with the win. The note of caution would be that a better side than Bournemouth will make us pay if we start as slowly as we did today.

Good turnout today. Lots of families, presumably making a weekend of it on the coast.

Almost the perfect away performance, something we rarely saw last season. We started slowly and could have been two down in the first three minutes, we then were rightly awarded the penalty and this did appear to give us great confidence to play some neat and tidy football, keeping the ball for decent passages of play and rarely just lumping the ball forward, always looking for the right ball in the final third. Second half was even, again we looked to pass the ball around and after scoring the second we kept them at arms length with a combination of good defending and neat passing when in possession, in the end Bournemouth who had been a decent passing team for the first hour were resigned to route one football and just got the impression they had run out of ideas on how to break us down.

Mention for the back five, Grof after a nervous start grew in confidence and deserved his clean sheet. Both full backs defended solidly and provided good outlets when we had possesion, Sadler is proving a model of consistency and Westlake had his best game of the season, marking the highly rated Marc Pugh out of the game. Bit suprised to see Smith replace Lancashire, however, after a dodgy first half he grew in confidence and in the second half headed away everything that came near him and possibly proved the managers team selection correct.

The goals hopefully will give Jarvis the confidence to go on and have a positive impact on games. He won his fair share of headers and was a handful for their centre halves whilst on the pitch, took the penalty with confidence and was in the right place to score from the corner, his overall performance could not be criticised.
Was suprised with the substitution of Gnapka for Nicholls, this definitely did not strengthen the team, if anything made us more vulnerable. Gnapka won headers both in attack and defence looked strong in possession and tracked back to help out Westlake when needed, for me did nothing wrong whilst on the pitch, Nicholls contributed very little in the 30 minutes on the pitch, I am not sure why Smith felt the need to change the team at the time he did, there again the result justifies team selection, both starting line up and substitutions.

We are not the finished article yet, but we are nobodys push over this season. Hard work and organisation mixed in with a good team spirit is a good starting point, if we can add some quality in key positions who knows what we may be able to achieve.
Now lets get to the second round of a cup!!

Re: A F C Bournemouth (A) League 1 Saturday 27/8/11.

Sat Aug 27, 2011 9:10 pm

Just got back. That was as enjoyable as it was unexpected. Not many of us would have predicted a 2-0 win at 3:10.

Manny Smith's recall at the expense of Lancashire was the biggest surprise in the line-up, especially considering the other enforced changes. Playing a rookie goalkeeper and then changing your centre half for the same game IMO is a bit of a gamble. Added to Mackens injury and the recall for Chambers, we'd effectively changed the whole spine of the team. Jarvis and Grigg didn't strike me as a front pairing that would have the Bournemouth defenders quaking in their boots and, to be honest, I thought we'd be in for a long afternoon.

And we started very slowly, we could have been 2-0 down inside the first three minutes. Westlake showing once again the value of defenders on the post at corners by clearing off the line and then a shot across goal which their striker tried to slide on to and just couldn't reach. Think Paul Gascoigne's extra time miss against Germany in Euro 96 and you get the idea of just how close we were to going behind.

Gradually we started to find our feet but the penalty was still against the run of play, a Sadler cross smacking the full back on the arm. Our second penalty of the season and Jarvis's second in four days. Tucked away as if it were an action replay of the reserve one, low to the keepers right sending him the wrong way.

After that we grew in confidence, we got progressively better and they got progressively worse. They had a couple of snap shots that Grof dealt with adequately and he also seemed to grow in confidence as the game wore on. The second goal was nice as we don't utilise set pieces well enough usually, but the reserves winner on Wednesday and Jarvis second goal today have both been headers from corners. If we can get in the habit of scoring from set pieces then it will go some way to taking the pressure off getting the creative midfielder to open teams up in open play (although it is clearly still required).

Grof - His Walsall record in competitive games now stands at one game, one clean sheet. I've said before though he'll be fun and games and I've seen nothing so far to make me change that opinion. His shot stopping is adequate enough, his distribution is very good. You can't knock his confidence but he does need to learn how to catch as he flaps at balls in the air far too often. Also needs to know when to time waste by following the ball to the byline before picking it up (0-0 in the 4th minute is not that time). Areas for improvement but will be happy with his debut.
Westlake - Gets better and better. Lost the ball needlessly a couple of times in the first half when he dribbled it out for a throw, but made a vital goal line clearance in the first 90 seconds and was solid throughout. Progressing well and would like to see us tie him to a longer contract.
Sadler - Crossed for the penalty to add to the one he won against Hartlepool. Wasn't really troubled all day and is a very solid left back. Provides width by getting forward well.
Butler - To me, Butler opitimises how much better we are as a team compared to last season. He performs to the same standard, with the same effort and commitment as he did last season. But for some reason, he doesn't seem to stand out as much this season. To me, that's because we're a lot better as a team now. He's not the only one doing it anymore. Solid as ever, although personally I think he looks more comfortable alongside Lancashire.
Smith - Was surprised by his recall but justified it with a 'Manny of old' performance. Had a lot of aerial work to do and won everything. Ironically this is Lancashire's weakness, so if the change was tactical to cope with Bournemouths aerial threat then it was a masterstroke on Deano's part.
Chambers - My favourite stat of the day: We are yet to conceed a goal this season while Chambers has been on the pitch. Looked a lot more solid with him in the middle although Peterlin can consider himself unlucky to be dropped. Their number 2 did his best to get him into trouble by making out he'd made a late tackle on his ankle, but he was having a giraffe and soon sprinted back on when he realised he'd rolled off the pitch and play wasn't gonna stop.
Taundry - A now customary Taundry performance. Strong in the tackle, reliable with his passing, getting around the pitch well. Seems to have a bigger engine than last year and is growing in to his role. Complimented Chambers well.
Gnakpa - Another who is getting better the more games he plays. Supported Westlake really well today, made a few tackles. But at the other end was winning headers and linking up the play with the strikers really well. He does seem to be suffering from Hector Sam syndrome though whereby no matter what he does he keeps being replaced after an hour.
Hurst - I like him. Has a lot of the ball and usually does something with it. Cracking corner for the second goal. Really involved in the game and also has a really good engine. Solid.
Jarvis - Singlehandedly justified our entry into the reserve league. Prior to that game he'd looked lethargic, unfit, lazy and disinterested. However, looked full of confidence today after his MOTM performance on Wednesday and would probably win the honour again today, purely by virtue of his two goals. Having seen the reserve game I never doubted he'd score the penalty and, thankfully, neither did he. Getting your first league start and bagging a brace, can't ask for more than that.
Grigg - Could be the fall guy of Jarvis's performance, as Jarvis certainly doesn't deserve to be left out of the next game. Macken's place is a given so Grigg could find himself left out. Didn't do a lot wrong today but didn't really stand out.

Subs

Nicholls - Wasn't as bad as Wednesday, partly because it was humanly impossible. Was left isolated up front in the closing stages, chasing hard but accomplishing very little. Did manage one good cross.
Beevers - Late replacement for Jarvis, very little time to make an impact.

One final point. In the first half, every corner they had they put a man on Grof, and we had no defender marking him. Grof's job is not to mark at corners, and if they were any better than they were it could have cost us a goal. Thankfully, they were rubbish. We got away with it but wouldn't like it to find ourselves in that position regularly as it will cost us.

But all in all, cracking result. Away win, clean sheet and no bookings. Happy days!
