Re: Aston Villa (H) Pre-season Friendly Thursday 21/7/11,
Shay Given has nothing on Jimmy! So we've had our match of the decade / cup final against the Dingles, now it is time for our biggest match since the 1933 win against Arsenal / Champions league cup final. PSH!
On a more positive note:
Walsall 3 - 1 Aston Villa (Alex McCleish to be booed throughout goals from Grigg, Gnapka and Chambers).
UTS!

I hope Grigg,Gnakpa and Chambers concentrate fully on the game instead of booing Mcleish throughout.

This'll be my first friendly since Nick Athey's testimonial against Leeds in 1975, so it had better be bloody good.

They bring the players and the fans, they're entitled to take the match ball home!
Hope they step off the gas for the rest of the game.

Bowerman's pulled one back. "Towering header" according to the relentlessly tedious official Villa text commentary.

Villa's team of crack internet monkeys has described it as a "dream start" for McLeish. Beating Walsall. One of the favourites for relegation from Division Three. A DREAM START! They'll be throwing their season tickets at him after three defeats on the bounce. Good grief. Pointless club supported by idiots from Sutton Coldfield.

Re: Aston Villa (H) Pre-season Friendly Thursday 21/7/11,
Just got back from the match.
After Tuesdays optimism tonight's performance was a more humbling affair. Granted Villa are a Premiership team and have some good players but it's not that they played amazingly rather Walsall just didn't turn up. In fact I'm pretty sure I can only remember one attempt on their goal all match.
You all probably know the starting line up so I won't repeat it but I'm sure that didn't help the cause. I had my reservations about Beevers on Tuesday night, albeit he wasn't on for long, but he started tonight and looked pretty sloppy to say the least. Definitely at fault for their first goal, in the mix up for their second goal and after that he just looked ragged, knackered and generally disinterested. Chambers was excellent again so that's something positive to come from tonight and Grof pulled off a couple of decent saves.
I would rate each player but other than those mentioned no-one really stood out for praise or criticism. A very different experience to Tuesday night ultimately.

Re: Aston Villa (H) Pre-season Friendly Thursday 21/7/11,
We didn't play quite as well tonight as we did against Wolves. But we have now played four games in 8 days and played two prem sides in 48 hours, so we were probably entitled to look a little jaded.
Andy Butler showed once again just how vital he will be this season...by sitting on the bench as Villa ripped us apart during the first half. Last week I stuck a tenner on Villa to get relegated at 20/1 with Paddy Power. If they hadn't got Darren Bent then it would look a shoe-in. As it happens, they have got him and he was the difference, scoring twice and setting up the third for Heskey by firing against the post when it looked easier to score.
The second half was disrupted by constant substitutions but we were probably the better side over the last 20 minutes. We actually won the second half 1-0, which was a positive. We would have won it 2-0 had their keeper not pushed a rasping 35 yard Taundry free kick wide in the dying minutes.
I said on Tuesday that we'd have fun and games with our new goalkeeper and I stand by that. He reminds me of a young Clayton Ince. Eccentric and prone to the odd error of judgement, but a cracking shot stopper. Made 3 or 4 really decent saves, including one blinder, to make up for a rash charge out of his area when he should have cleared striker, defender and ball into the car park, only to miss all three. Delfounso (sp?) fired wide though from an acute angle.
I'm not convinced by Jarvis but lets give him time. He was up against Richard Dunne for most of the match which would be a tough assignment for most players. Gnakpa looks an enigma, but he managed to upset the Villa fans (not sure how) so there's one reason to love him. I prefer Westlake to Beevers at right back. Sadler and Hurst again look promising on the left. Taundry also played well and picked up the sponsors MOTM. Peterlin was annonymous when he came on, or maybe I'd stopped concentrating by then. I hope Deano judges him by Tuesday and not by tonight.

Re: Aston Villa (H) Pre-season Friendly Thursday 21/7/11,
Agree with Priestley Saddler's assessment. I have only seen the friendlies v. Morton and Villa and so my opinions are based only on little evidence. Jarvis looks the only dud signing to date while the others are of variable quality with Chambers and Gnakpa being the pick.
As for Peterlin, I have seen little to suggest that he would be the answer to our midfield prayers.

Re: Aston Villa (H) Pre-season Friendly Thursday 21/7/11,
I think we were only allowed to play as well as Villa allowed us to play. I'm not too disheartened as we were playing a Premier League team, just the same as Villa shouldn't get too excited as they were only playing a 3rd divison team.
On first viewing, I like the look of Chambers, Sadler and Grof (I agree we could have a few 'fun and games' with him, given an extended run!) but am hoping there will be more to come from the other new signings, most of whom were unconvincing at best.
I think Cheltenham on Tuesday will be the truer test of where we're at.

Indeed - and the annual Villa friendly is exactly what that is... a pay day. At least we weren't tonked. Wish we had a "Darren Bent" type player.... he had 3 touches during his spell, 2 went in, and the other hit the post before Heskey slotted home. Nice.
Second half was more even, but not much to shout about. Hopefully by the next time I see Walsall (Yeovil at home), we will be top of the league and in the next round of the League cup.

Silly Walsall fans panicking again... we played half our first team first half against a full strength villa team and lost 3-0 we played half of our first team in the second half against a villa reserve team and won 1-0. Our first team will look NOTHING like what started either half....FACT

Re: Aston Villa (H) Pre-season Friendly Thursday 21/7/11,
Let's be realistic here.Villa played a very strong team against a Saddlers side without Andy Butler(until late on)
We have played 2 of our neighbours and had over 12k inside the Banks's in 3 days.In my book that's over 150k in revenue equivilant to 3 league one home games so many thanks to Villa and Wolves.
Let's hope that this added income will mean we have the budget to compete well in league 1.
Please let this cash be used to sign a creative midfielder to complement Chambers. If this happens we will do we will be ok next season.

Re: Aston Villa (H) Pre-season Friendly Thursday 21/7/11,
First time i had seen any of the new signings so didnt really know what to expect. Gnapka and chambers were easily the pick and sadker looks a decent player. Grof looked awesome in the half time warm up and made save after save in the 2nd half although he did have a bit of a mare with manny smith on one long ball! Jarvis and hurst were alright but didnt really have much impact on the game. However, purely based on that game, beevers shouldnt be playing football e.g. He got paced by heskey, although i guess he was playing against marc albrighton on his wing as well so its hard to judge... Apart from that taundry was quality and paterson from his performance today could potentially be pushing for a first team place.

All our goals against, during pre season have been scored in the 6 yard box. Something for Deano and Nicholl to work on.
