Greenock Morton (A) Pre-Season Friendly 13/07/11

Sun Jul 10, 2011 10:35 pm

Our first pre-season friendly sees us travel north of the border to face Scottish Divison One side Greenock Morton. I'm not sure how much of a test this will be for the new looked Saddlers but as manager Dean Smith says team bonding is the most important thing of our tour of Scotland.

Prediction 2-2 Gnakpa and Macken with the goals.

Greenock Morton 3-2 Walsall. A Trialist to score all 5 goals.

Asps to lose his kilt in the pub before the game.

Christ, first rusty pre season game or not. We should win by at least 2 or 3.

Scottish football is pathetic. Womens football is better.

Update from Nick Mashiter:
Morton look sharper than #walsallfc but they've been in training longer so it's not a surprise. Saddlers just a little rusty.

Already an improvement on last season, when our pre-season record was Played 5, Won 0, Drew 1, Lost 4, Scored 2, Conceeded 12.

The whole squad getting a run out. A win and a clean sheet, from a trialist goalkeeper as well. Two new signings getting the goals (although the first may go down as an og). Providing nobody picked up any knocks then thats about as perfect a night as we could have hoped for.

Difficult to assess players or performance as it was like a Sunday afternoon kick about

I thought we looked sharper second half though with Gnakpa and Chambers on

Proper football ground, warm welcome, and a sunny evening as well

There were a few surprised looks when a coach load of Walsall fans turned up :D

Your bus drove past me a couple of miles from 'Cappielow' (stadium has hardly changed in 30-40 years, and all the better for it I think - used to have a shocking playing surface, but is now considered one of the best in the country) - well done for making the trip!

Maybe 9 of our likely starting 11 for the season played the first half tonight... several new players in there. Only a few familiar faces in the second half, some fringe players, trialists and under-19's... including a 15 year old that Celtic have already offered to buy from us.

Gnakpa looked the most dangerous player on the park... set up one and scored the other I believe. He skinned our trialist full-back a couple of times... and caught out our trialist keeper for the second goal, shocking keeping, but clever to take the speculative shot.

It was a very 'friendly' friendly... hope you enjoyed your trip. Will be looking out for your results in the coming season... good luck!
