An uninspiring game between two cautious teams, scared of making mistakes. We deserved the win as we were less bad than a dreadful Wycombe team. The Chairboys' first and only on-target attempt on our goal came in the 87th minute, although, to be fair, they had a couple of attempts narrowly wide. We totally dominated the second half but it was symptomatic of our lack of self-confidence that there were rarely sufficient of our players in their penalty-area when we sent in early crosses - too scared of making a mistake and missing a chance.
Grof - nothing to do
Taundry - back in his old position; steady performance; very few mistakes; rarely supported the attack.
Lancashire - a little "rusty" but generally coped well.
Butler - his usual performance with no expensive blunders, this time.
Sadler - defended well but, like Taundry, rarely supported the attack.
Cuvelier - confident and skilful on the ball; adds a lot to the midfield as long as he has a "minder" alongside him.
Chambers - tackled well in his defensive midfield rôle but his distribution let him down - he couldn't pass water!
Hurst - workmanlike performance topped off with a remarkable goal (what was the Wycombe goalkeeper thinking of?)
Patterson - in a roaming, free rôle, just behind the front two; showed a lot of skill and, unlike most of his team-mates, the self-confidence to have a go at goal. Sponsors' MotM (I agree).
Grigg - poor first half but "woke up" after the interval; not sure if he is the right player to partner Nicholls
Nicholls - yet another weak, woeful penalty attempt, fortunately not expensive this time, unlike his two previous misses.
Macken (for Grigg) -laid on Bowerman's goal
Peterlin (for Patterson) - only on for stoppage time
Bowerman (for Nicholls) - added a lot of energy and took his goal well, following a sublime pass from Granddad!
We looked better when we eschewed the hoofball game and played it on the ground. Aimless punts upfield, particularly against knuckle-scraping Neanderthals, like Laing, Winfield and Basey, are never going to yield dividends. Unfortunately, Scunthorpe's win at Orient, today, will give them confidence for Tuesday's game so we will have to build on this performance.
