It does look a very weak team, and an even weaker bench.

I agree. Not many there who could turn a game on its head through a talismanic and inspirational performance.

Bevan maybe? We've tried pretty much everyone else. :(

That assumption would be based on the belief that Hutchings would not drop Walker for Brain. A sensible manger would not, but can you be quite so sure about Hutchings?

For those of us who do not have access to Walsall live commentary, it is available via BBC London 94.9 on the Internet. "It's all Walsall at the moment" they are saying

BBC London - "For Charlton, half-time can't come quickly enough... words will be said by Mark Kinsella and Phil Parkinson in the dressing room... on another day against slightly better opposition this game could have been out of sight by now..... neat play and good football from Walsall"

This isn't the Saddlers side I'm familiar with this season!!!

If you Google "Charlton Athletic live commentary", part way down the resulting page you'll see the BBC link.

Sounds like a very good performance so far.

Those who have not got Saddlers' Player are missing Mick Kearns' very vague answers to questions about Walker's alleged hamstring injury. Apparently he may have picked it up earlier in the week when training with Spurs, and Walker only turns up at Walsall towards the end of the week. Mick says that since Walker is 37 you cannot expect him to train at Walsall very often.

BBC London commentary: "If you didn't know the respective clubs' league positions, you'd think Walsall were battling at the top of the league".

"I've not seen Walsall this season, but looking at them today I'm amazed at their current position.... you'd think Walsall were chasing promotion, not Charlton. There has to be an improvement in the second half, because Charlton can't play this badly for the whole game".

Interesting statistic after half an hour's play.... Corners - Charlton 0 Walsall 4 :o :o

Come on Walsall, if we're playing well take advantage!

Charlton have the quality to score in a flash.

Half-time 0 - 0

There are sections of the home crowd booing the team off the pitch - where have we seen that before???

Exactly, it's still worrying that even when we're playing better that we cant take advantage. If we lose it'll be that same old excuse that we played better but we didnt take our chances...

Problem is, we've failed to score despite Charlton being awful (according to the commentary). You'd fancy that they won't be as bad in the second half.

I agree. How many goals has this starting eleven scored so far this season, Rob? Do they get into double figures? :(

Another unlucky defeat looms. Excuse and Dingle might as well write Hutchings interview now, they know exactly what he will say

Fingers crossed for a Matt Richards free kick or an Alex Nicholls breakaway then...

Jonny Brain scored a couple for Rochdale earlier in the season I remember!

Charlton management not happy at the first half performance - two substitutions for them to start after the break.

The second half has started much where things left off - we're apparently in control all over the pitch.

Richards 4 + Gray 3 + Nicholls 1 + the rest 0 = 8 goals

The bench:
Marshall 1 + Smith 1 + the rest 0 = 2 goals.

So between the 16 outfield players at Charlton there are 10 goals so far this season.

"The partnership of Taundry and Richards has been key to Walsall's performance here" (BBC London)

10 minutes into the second half - Charlton corners 0 Walsall corners 6

The Charlton commentators are praising Taundry to the hills, very impressed by him being captain, making his 100th league appearance at 21, and talking about his physical presence and industry. They said the key to Walsall's good performance is our centre midfield of Richards and Taundry.

Why is it that whenever we expect walsall to be drubbed (ie always) I have a massive bet riding on them to lose,
how can this sunday morning league side be holding Charlton, at home, and showing as the better side?
Thats a nice healthy Chrissy bonus just waiting for Charlton to get a couple like they should! that'll teach me!
Reminiscent of us going to Sunderland after 17 straight defeats years ago, and coming away with a 3-0 win!

(or even Elland Road last season    )

Attendance 14,938 at The Valley, including 114 from God's own country.

I considered betting against us for the first time ever before the Carlisle match. I took the result that day as a sign that such thoughts should never enter my head again.

Meanwhile, every time Nicholls' name is mentioned, it seems to be because he's strayed offside or mis-controlled a pass. Swings & roundabouts?
